You'd think the cast of the West Wing would rejoice after Thursday's Emmy nominations presentation--as the show was given the best drama nod, yet again. Instead, actors Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford and John Spencer have surprisingly entered into intense contract negotiations with Warner Bros. and John Wells Productions to have their salaries pushed up to the level of costars Martin Sheen and Rob Lowe, Variety reports.

West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, arrested April 15 at California's Burbank Airport on drug possession charges, will enter a court-supervised drug treatment program, Reuters reports. Sorkin plead guilty to the two felony counts and one misdemeanor count with which he had been charged, changing an earlier not guilty plea so that he could receive admission to the "Deferred Entry of Judgment" program. There will be no entry of this incident on Sorkin's record if he successfully completes the program. If he fails to complete the program, Sorkin could receive up to 44 months in prison and a fine of no more than $10,000. Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, said the program would run for 24 months.

West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, who was arrested on drug-possession charges last month, was honored by the International Radio and Television Society Foundation at a ceremony held Wednesday in New York. According to The Associated Press, Sorkin, 39, received the foundation's annual award for his work on West Wing, but in his acceptance speech, he turned the occasion into an opportunity for some self-deprecation. Said Sorkin: "When you feel stupid and embarrassed, facing a ballroom full of distinguished people in your industry is just what the doctor ordered.''

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 10, 2000 -- The crime spree is over. "The Sopranos" will have to kiss someone else's ring -- namely, the big boss man's, the president of the United States of TV America.

"The West Wing" was named Best Drama Series at the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards, capping a night wherein the political drama dominated, save for one major setback when James Gandolfini of "The Sopranos" bested Martin Sheen in the competition for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

"I think the Academy has an affinity for slightly overweight bald men," Gandolfini quipped onstage.

Gandolfini's win was the lone bright spot for "The Sopranos," which otherwise got whacked -- like when Sela Ward of ABC’s "Once and Again" beat both Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco for the Best Actress in a Drama Series Emmy. "The Sopranos" came into the night with 18 nominations.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 13, 2000 -- While the February sweeps generally adds up to TV putting its collective "best foot forward," it also means that the best shows of the year all run at the same time, so you'll still miss most of them.

It would be nice if the networks could spread the wealth throughout the year, but to make a long, complicated story that no one truly understands short, they don't -- and won't. So here's a heads-up for what's on the tube this week:

"HOMICIDE: THE MOVIE" (9 p.m., Sunday, NBC) is a curtain call for the recently departed series -- minus the goofy-sounding title "Homicide: Life on the Street." The original series stayed on the air by its fingernails for seven years, largely due to the fierce loyalty of fans who have undoubtedly already marked this one on their calendars. But for the rest of you -- those who might have he

HOLLYWOOD, June 20, 2000 -- "Sports Night" is really, really, really dead. According to trade paper reports today, rumors of the acclaimed comedy series' afterlife on cable were greatly exagerrated. Canned last month by ABC, the "Sportscenter"-esque "Sports Center" will not -- as widely expected -- be revived on HBO.

Daily Variety says talks between Touchstone Television (the studio behind the show) and HBO fell apart over (what else?) money.

While there are other networks out there other than HBO, creator Aaron Sorkin reportedly doesn't want any others. "Sports Night" debuted on ABC in 1998.

HOLLYWOOD, May 14, 2000 -- Sometimes all these special events during sweeps months just get in the way. They drive a wedge between you, the viewer, and your favorite shows. But, then again, if it wasn't for the May sweeps, there'd be no season finale cliffhangers. And if there were no season finale cliffhangers … Well, we'd rather not even think about a world that bleak. Instead, let's get ready for some quality time with our favorite shows before the summer reruns start… It's season finale week! But first, some special events:

-- After months of soul-searching and hard prayer seeking a solution to ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," CBS may have just found the answer in "Jesus" (9 p.m. EDT/PDT, Sunday and Wednesday). Produced by Lorenzo Minoli, who has brought a slew of Old Testament-themed movies to TNT, "Jesus" promises not only a lavish production, but also a more-modern
