NEW YORK, NY, June 5, 2000 -- No one knows this yet but there's a new musical that will land on Broadway very soon and it will be a huge, huge hit.
How can we be so sure? Yes, the spankin' new musical comedy version of the smash indie "The Full Monty" opened last Thursday at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre to great reviews, including one in Monday's Variety, but this column has always been a little, uh, skeptical of critics.
But one of the theater world's most seasoned professionals (now a major force on the West Coast after having cut his teeth in New York for years) caught a preview early last week and declared "The Full Monty" an "unequivocal smash" and "howlingly commercial."
Yes, playwright Terrence McNally ("The Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Master Class," "Love! Valour! Compassion!") uncharacteristically breaks no new ground here, but he and novice musical comedy

Here's a list of all the films opening this week.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 11, 2001 -- You won't be hearing the name Steven Soderbergh at this year's Independent Spirit Awards.
Instead, try Miguel Arteta, Darren Aronofsky and Kenneth Lonergan -- whose "Chuck & Buck," "Requiem for a Dream," and "You Can Count On Me," respectively, have nabbed a field-best five nominations each at the 16th Annual Independent Spirit Awards.
"Chuck & Buck" -- the second full-length feature from Arteta -- was nominated for best feature under $500,000, screenplay, director, supporting female (Lupe Ontiveros) and debut performance (Mike White).
Among "Requiem's" nominations are best director (Darren Aronofsky) and best feature. The drug-addiction flick will go up against "Before Night Falls," "George Washington," "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in the best film column.
"You Can Count On Me" will r

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 2, 2000 -- Julia Roberts might very well be the hardest working woman in Hollywood.
With "American Sweethearts" and the "Ocean’s Eleven" remake already in the works, the $20 mil actress is in talks to star in another high-profile project.
In "Replay," Roberts would reteam with Brad Pitt -- whom the actress worked with in the upcoming "The Mexican" and will be working with again in "Ocean’s Eleven" -- where she plays the former love of a deceased man (Pitt) who comes back to life to correct his mistakes.
The project will mark the first collaboration between ex-Disney head Joe Roth’s Revolution Studios and Warner Bros.
MOVING IN: Daily Variety reports that Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore will star in "The Duplex." The comedy is about a young couple trying to move into a swanky New York duplex.

HOLLYWOOD, May 31, 2000 -- Last week he vowed to never get married, and this week he’s going to be "Unfaithful."
Today's Daily Variety says George Clooney is in negotiations to star in the drama "Unfaithful" where he’ll play a man who finds out that his wife has been cheating on him.
Based on the 1968 French flick "La Femme Infidel," the film will be directed by Adrian Lyne, who last helmed the 1997 "Lolita" remake.
THE INDIE ELEMENT: Indie-minded Milla Jovovich will join indie actor Adrien Brody in the indie pic "Dummy," Variety also tells us. She’s to play an aspiring singer with a thing for Yiddish music, and he’s to play a ventriloquist.
TO SIR, WITH LOVE: Anthony Hopkins is rumored to have been offered the lead in "Hearts in Atlantis," an adaptation of a Stephen King short story. Variety says "Snow Falling on Cedars" director Scott Hicks is in talks to

Hollywood is expecting Warner Bros. and Castle Rock Entertainment's opening of "The Green Mile" to walk off with the most box office green this weekend.
The R-rated drama, written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tom Hanks, kicks off at more than 2,850 theaters.
"'Toy Story [2],' if it's down in the neighborhood of 35-40%, is $16-18 million. And I think 'Green Mile' beats that based on the tracking. They're sitting there with an 18% first choice right now," one studio executive said earlier this week."
"It is high," he said of the tracking results. "Although I understand the reviews are not very good, with Tom Hanks (starring), that's $20 million-plus."
While a $20 million-plus opening is certainly very attractive, it's not spectacular. One of the factors working against a bigger first weekend for the adult appeal "Green" is that adults are bu
