SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 13, 2000 -- Steven Soderbergh's crime-drama "The Limey" and Alexander Payne's high school satire "Election" led the pack of (relatively) low-budget, high-expectation projects as nominations were announced Wednesday for the 15th Annual Independent Spirit Awards, honoring, yes, indie film.

"The Limey" and "Election" received a field-best five nominations each. Hollywood blockbusters such as "Toy Story 2" and "The Green Mile" received zippo. (They're not indies.)

With the studio heavyweights excluded, a variety of films that failed to garner tremendous box office during the 1999 film season found redemption as the Spirit nominations were handed down. David Lynch's "The Straight Story", a simple yet powerful film about an aging man's trek across country on his lawn mower, earned four nominations. Kimberly Peirce's controversial Boys Don't Cry also r

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 25, 2000 -- Call it an act of justice or just plain old good taste.

"Election" finally got the kind of props it deserved.

After getting all but snubbed by Oscar voters, the critically acclaimed high school satire, starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick, was vindicated at today's IFP/West's 15th Annual Independent Spirit Awards, taking a field-best three mentions for best indie feature, best screenplay and best director.

The indie-minded types, who gathered here in a tent for the afternoon beachfront ceremony, also assured Oscar nominees Hilary Swank, Charlie Kaufman, Richard Farnsworth and Chloë Sevginy of glory -- regardless of whether Academy voters deign them worthy of gold statuettes Sunday.

Swank, who faces the daunting task of trying to defeat Mrs. Warren Beatty (aka Annette Bening) in the Oscar race, was tapped

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 19, 2000 -- Is Hong Kong action starlet Michelle Yeoh game enough to take on Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix" sequels?

Maybe. Daily Variety columnist Michael Fleming is reporting that the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" actress might jump in to replace fellow actioner Jet Li in the back-to-back sci-fi action sequels.

According to Fleming, Li's decision to drop out of the project has to do with a disagreement over pay.

The "Romeo Must Die" hotshot has allegedly asked for $13 million for two films, but the project could only afford shelling out $3 mil for both films without any backend deal.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- Film nominations for the 52nd Annual Writers Guild Awards were handed down today, and, with few exceptions, the list was surprise-free.

The usual award-show suspects, including Golden Globe screenplay champ "American Beauty," were honored for their excellence in screenplays.

The most notable surprise nod was perhaps for Lewis Colick's adaptation for the critically lauded (but mostly overlooked) "October Sky."

One notable snub came in the form of "The Hurricane," which last month took University of Southern California's annual Scripter Award for best film adaptation. While a fast-starter on the buzz front, the movie has come under attack of late for flying fast and loose with the story of wrongly imprisoned boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter.

The guild's East and West Coast voting bodies decided upon nomin

In a surprising move, the members of the New York Film Critics Circle, an association of film reviewers from major Manhattan-based newspapers and magazines, selected "Topsy-Turvy" as the Best Picture of 1999.

Part biopic, part backstage drama, "Topsy-Turvy" is an opulent motion picture that focuses on the prickly relationship between librettist William Schwenk Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. Mike Leigh was selected as Best Director for the same film, which now becomes poised with "American Beauty" (selected by the National Board of Review), "Three Kings" (the Boston Critics' choice) and "The Insider" (the L.A. Film Critics Association winner) as frontrunners in the upcoming Oscar race.

The top acting honors were awarded to two performers who portrayed real-life figures. Veteran Richard Farnsworth was named Best Actor for his turn as Alvin Straight, a man who rode a tr
