SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 16, 2000 -- Tired of Oscar-worthy dramas? In the mood for (hey!) a teen flick? Your time is here (again).

"Down to You," a Generation Y romance starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles, leads the pack of new releases this week, presumably to the delight of the nation's mall rats.

Elsewhere, a host of critically acclaimed (or in teenspeak: boring and long) films previously in limited engagements will add screens. That list includes: "Angela's Ashes," "A Map of the World" and "Titus".

Here's a complete list of films opening this week:

FRIDAY:

"Angela's Ashes" (Paramount) -- Adapted from Frank McCourt's Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, this film documents the author's childhood in Ireland during the 1930s and '40s. Emily Watson ("Hilary & Jackie") and Robert Carlyle ("Trainspotting") co-star as Frank's working-class parent

CANNES, May 17, 2000 -- Kim Basinger's bedroom eyes aren't the only thing smoldering around Cannes. Maybe it's because everyone is tired. Maybe it's because the "haves" walk so freely in front of the cordoned off "have-nots." Maybe it's because you simply cannot have a saint around without a devil being nearby.

Whatever the reason, fights are igniting and hotel rooms are getting robbed. Yes, even with all the riot police shipped in from all over France. It's the seedy side of seaside Cannes, where petty thieves mix with pretty women.

Police are investigating a melee that broke out as dawn was breaking at the Palm Beach disco where the tres late, after-hours fete for Dave Stewart's (one party is never enough) "Honest" was held. Unnamed club-hopping youths wheeling around in convertibles were among the slightly wounded. Ah, drama.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 10, 2000 -- What a little war movie can do to a career. Colin Farrell, who got on the Hollywood radar with his performance in the war flick "Tigerland," has signed on to star in not one but two projects, Daily Variety says.

Farrell will first headline the drama "Phone Booth" for his "Tigerland" director, Joel Schumacher, in November. And then he'll segue to a courtroom drama flick, "Hart's War," where he'll play a POW who must defend a black soldier for murder.

The actor got the part in "War" after Edward Norton bailed on the project. The stellar cast for the film includes Bruce Willis and possibly Anthony Hopkins.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME: The Hollywood Reporter says that Dennis Quaid might star in the Disney flick "The Rookie." Based on a true story, the film is about a high school baseball coach (Quaid) who makes the major leagues at age 35.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 20, 1999 — The sequel to the Academy Award-winning thriller "The Silence of the Lambs" will apparently move forward with its lead villain still intact. (Even if the guy's victims won't be.)

Anthony Hopkins has reportedly agreed to return to the "Lambs" fold for "Hannibal" -- reprising his role as the brilliant but ravenously deadly Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter. No word on what the star's paycheck would be.

The Hopkins score, as reported in today's Hollywood Reporter, should come as a sigh of relief to producers who had yet to land any of the original film's leads. Jodie Foster, though not completely out of the picture, has expressed doubts about the way her stalwart FBI agent Clarice Starling was portrayed in author Thomas Harris' novel "Lambs" follow-up, also named "Hannibal." Foster says she's holding fire until reading a script.

HOLLYWOOD, May 18, 2000 -- Hollywood has been deprived of a thespian of the most rarified breed. Bart the Bear ™ -- the 1,500 pound, 9 1/2 feet tall grizzly perhaps best-known for playing its kind in the 1997 survival flick "The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin -- died in Utah on May 10, it has been disclosed. He was 22.

Bart's other big-screen credits include "Legends of the Fall" and "The Bear," in which he played the bear.

Bart the Bear ™ was born in a stateside zoo on Jan. 19, 1978, and went to live with his adopted human family -- Doug and Lynne Seus -- shortly after.

His distinguished film career took his humans and him from the Austrian/Italian Alps to the wilderness of Alaska, and finally to a stage appearance on the 1998 Academy Awards.

Actor Alec Baldwin will resume post-production work next week on his directorial debut, The Devil and Daniel Webster, according to the film's executive producer, David Glasser.

Variety reported Tuesday that Baldwin is refusing to continue work on the film until producers from Cutting Edge Entertainment assure him that the cash will be there to finish the film.

Glasser told Hollywood.com on Tuesday afternoon that Baldwin's comments in the Variety story were incorrect and that at this time, the actor has been paid in full and all issues have been resolved through their respective lawyers.

Baldwin is set to go into the editing bay Tuesday, May 29, as planned, Glasser said.

Baldwin, or his lawyer and publicist, could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 31, 2000 -- Let us guess: It’s the British accent, right? Daily Variety reports today that Anthony Hopkins of "The Silence of the Lambs’" Hannibal the Cannibal fame, is going to voice the narration to the Jim Carrey vehicle "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," due out Nov. 17.

Hopkins’ voiceover for the flick is said to be a combination of dialogue from the Dr. Seuss classic and original narration.

ARTSY FARTSY: Variety also reports that Alliance Atlantis Pictures has bought the foreign distribution rights to "Pollock," a Ed Harris-helmed and headlined film about abstract expressionist bad boy painter Jackson Pollock. HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 10, 2001 -- George Clooney and Nicolas Cage are getting serious about issues of life and death these days.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 9, 2000 -- Those who are waiting anxiously for the sequel to "The Silence of the Lambs" have a "Red Dragon" to look forward to.

No, it's not a martial arts flick, but a third film in the works starring everyone's favorite human muncher, Hannibal Lecter. Universal Pictures and the producers behind "Hannibal" are planning a third chapter of the Lecter saga. Anthony Hopkins, who won the role of the crazed cannibal in "Silence," is reportedly interested in reprising his Oscar-winning role for a third time, provided he likes the script, The Hollywood Reporter says.

The third film would be based on author Thomas Harris' 1981 bestseller "Red Dragon," the book that introduced the world to the psychiatrist who took a liking to the taste of human flesh. With such anticipation for the release of "Hannibal" on Feb. 9, the producers decided that a third installment wou

Surrounded by a crowd of camera-happy fans and an equally obsessive press, Ryder was moved and emotional as she was showered with praise by "Bram Stoker's Dracula" co-star Anthony Hopkins; Johnny Grant, chairman of the Walk of Fame committee; and Tom Rothman, chairman of Fox Films.

In the film, Hewitt's devil will go head to head with Hopkins' character in a battle for the soul of a writer played by Baldwin.

The project will begin production Jan. 15.

The actor, who was sworn in before buddies John Travolta and Steven Spielberg in Los Angeles on Wednesday, is being branded in the Brit tabs alternately as "Hannibal Traitor "and "Hannibal Defector" -- nods, of course, to his Oscar-winning turn as the flesh-eating Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs."
