The onslaught of "10 Best" list-bound films rounding out the year can only mean one thing: Awards season is on its way.

And the Golden Globes, widely regarded as Oscar's fun-loving cousin and a critical barometer in the Academy Awards race, set its wheels in motion today by giving Al Pacino an offer he can't refuse: The Cecil B. DeMille Award, which honors outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.

At the press conference in Beverly Hills, executive producer Dick Clark also announced actress/model Katie Flynn as this year's Miss Golden Globe.

Pacino, who starred last year in both "The Insider" and "Any Given Sunday," is a 13-time Golden Globe nominee, winning for his leading dramatic roles in "Scent of a Woman" and "Serpico." He has also been up for the Academy Award eight

Woody Harrelson's renewable energy and bicycle tour went through Washington state recently to include the Solar Living Center in its soon to be released film What Every Young Person Should Know. After all, Woody's been seen wearing a hemp suit, with a hemp belt and matching hemp shoes. All of the Deadheads I know have been following Woody around since Jerry Garcia dies.

NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 24, 2000 -- The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 57th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night was dubbed "Hollywood's party of the year," and it certainly brought out some of Hollywood's biggest names. But a closer look under the show's "Holly-hood" reveals New York, like Hollywood, as big a star of the ceremony.

Yes, Hollywood pillars such as Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise, Jack Lemmon and Peter Fonda hugged statuettes for, respectively, "Man on the Moon," "Magnolia," "Inherit the Wind" and "Passion of Ayn Rand." And DreamWorks' "American Beauty" and Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 2," both, cinematically speaking, very much American beauties, are most definitely brilliant Hollywood creations.

But, moving right along and Hollywood aside, New Yorkers couldn't get enough awards and recognition. Central Park West's Michael J. Fox, who sadly is leaving "Spin Cit

NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 4, 2000 --- Jodie Foster may be passing on "Hannibal," the grisly sequel to "The Silence of the Lambs," but she isn't quite abandoning oddball projects.

Come this spring, she'll be producing and directing "Flora Plum," a period film about a young waif (Claire Danes) who is adopted by a circus and befriended by a freak who falls for her while running her newfound showbiz career.

The movie is a return to the "freak" territory Foster roamed in so many of her films prior to this winter's regal "Anna and the King." Foster's pre-"Anna" "freaky" string of troubled characters and assorted weirdos dates back as far as 1972 and "Kansas City Bomber" (in which she played the daughter of a female roller-derby star).

The freaky Foster roster also includes: "Taxi Driver" (she's a kid hooker in a creepy nocturnal New York); "Nell" (she's a wolf-girl); "Carny"

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 10, 2000 -- Barbra Streisand has made American Film Institute history.

The stage and film performer has been selected to receive the 2001 AFI Life Achievement Award, making her the first woman director to be awarded such an honor in the award's 29-year history, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Barbra Streisand is a living legend who epitomizes the essence of American film," AFI board Chairman Howard Stringer said in a statement. "She is a pioneer in everything she does -- whether it's acting, directing, writing, producing or singing. Over her 40-year career, she has garnered the adulation and respect of the entire creative community as well as the world at large."

Streisand will be honored at the AFI's annual award ceremony on Feb. 22 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. But for those who don't have a ticket, no worries. The gr

PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 23, 2000 -- So, what's it like when you sell your movie at Sundance? Like this: You drive through the streets whooping, yelling, cranking up the stereo and tossing black Adidas ski hats to the unwashed (and un-picked-up) masses.

The groovesters of "Groove" are, yes, grooving. A day after Sony Pictures Classic snapped up the low-budget slice-of-rave-life flick, the film's players were partying in the streets here this afternoon. And to hear one of its stars tell it -- this was situation normal, big-time movie deal or no.

"We've been partying since Day One of shooting and that's all it was, was 28 days in a warehouse, dancing 18 hours a day," actor Steve Van Mormer told Hollywood.com while dancing atop the SUV-anointed "Groove" Mobile. "And we haven't stopped since."

Not that the Sony deal hasn't made the day of even the most veteran party anim

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 19, 2001 -- He might say that he is the Antichrist Superstar, but Marilyn Manson certainly is not immune to matters of the heart.

The shock rocker and his "Jawbreaker" actress gal pal Rose McGowan have broken off their engagement and called it quits, McGowan's publicist confirmed Thursday.

"There is great love, but our lifestyle difference is, unfortunately, even greater," McGowan said in a brief statement.

McGowan, 27, and Manson, 32, were engaged two years ago and were together for about a year before that.

COMING TOGETHER: In (reportedly) happier news: The New York Daily News is saying that Christy Turlington and director-actor Edward Burns are engaged. Its source? A "close" friend of Turlington, who told the tab that the model is wearing a big engagement ring.

We're waiting to hear from the actor's people regarding the scoop.

This photographer wasn't going to take being thrown in jail without a fight.

Freelance photographer Wendell Wall, 28, is suing Barbra Streisand, her husband James Brolin and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department for allegedly conspiring to incarcerate him.

Streisand and Brolin deny the allegations. Wall was arrested Jan. 8 after the singer and her beau complained to officers that they were being followed and photographed by Wall while they were out looking at a car to purchase, Reuters reports.

Wall, who lives down the street from the famous couple in Malibu, Calif., admits to taking their picture while they were shopping for a car but denies stalking them, as Streisand has said. Wall also says in his suit filed Tuesday that Streisand conspired to keep Wall in jail by having authorities raise his bail from $150,000 to a staggering $1 million. Wall alleges that his

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 13, 2000 -- What the world needs now is ... a new Merv Griffin record! And that's exactly what the world's going to get, thanks to Pat Boone's unwavering dedication to preserving the art of crooning -- that mild, earnest, from-the-heart style of singing love songs.

To that end, Boone held a press conference here today, where he signed Merv to a recording contract and introduced to the world the next Frank Sinatra and/or Harry Connick Jr.

The event took place -- where else? -- at Merv's own Beverly Hilton Hotel, and it was emceed by yet another golden-age fossil, "Laugh-In" announcer Gary Owens.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 1, 2000 -- Will "Felicity" be flunked by the WB? And if it is, will it be granted the equivalent of a summer-school reprieve by ABC? That's the latest buzz, according to today's Hollywood Reporter. The sophomore college-life series, starring Keri Russell, Scott Foley and Scott Speedman, is ranked No. 144 for the season to date, which even by the WB's generous standards is -- how should we say? -- lousy.

The Reporter says if the WB brings down the ax on the show, ABC might be of a mind to pick it up. It could be a karma thing -- the WB previously stole "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" from the alphabet network.

All will be revealed the week of May 15, when all the networks unveil their schedules for the 2000-2001 season.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 22, 2000 -- MTV comic Tom Green is in "excellent spirits" after three hours of cancer surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles. Tom Green The procedure -- a second sweep by doctors to nab any remaining cancerous cells -- comes after one last week in which the 28-year-old funnyman had his right testicle removed.

Production on Green's self-titled show on MTV is on hold while he rehabs. When he comes back, he'll star in "The Cancer Special" (really) featuring footage from Tuesday's surgery.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 16, 2000 -- The 28-year-old stepbrother of "Titanic" superstar Leonardo DiCaprio is in a Los Angeles area jail today on $1 million bail. The allegation: Suspicion of attempted murder.

Adam Farrar, himself an actor, who appeared in the controversial kiddie-bank-robber indie flick "Pups," was arrested about noon Wednesday at a home in Marina Del Rey, Calif., after an alleged attack on his girlfriend, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says.

Leonardo DiCaprio Upon being taken into custody, Farrar told deputies he was Leo's stepbrother. While the familial factoid is true (Leo's camp confirmed as much today), authorities say they're not sure why Farrar offered that by way of ID info.

In addition to the attempted-murder booking, Farrar was also accused of making "terrorist threats" against his (unidentified) girlfriend.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 2, 2000 -- Who made off with Sharon Stone's stones?

A 48-year-old ex-housekeeper of the "Basic Instinct" star was due to be arraigned in a Los Angeles court today on charges she purloined more than $300,000 in jewelry and other items from the actress' West L.A. home, authorities said.

Socorro Del Carmen Membrano faces one count of grand theft. She was arrested Tuesday following a police investigation, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said.

Membrano worked for Stone for three years, prosecutors said. It was not known what was allegedly stolen -- or when.

Stone's camp declined comment.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 24, 2000 -- The morning after the Golden Globes, the Directors Guild of America heated up the awards competition by announcing its nominees for director of the year.

This year's DGA nods went to Globe winner Sam Mendes for "American Beauty,"Spike Jonze for "Being John Malkovich," Frank Darabont for "The Green Mile," Michael Mann for "The Insider" and M. Night Shyamalan for "The Sixth Sense."All are first-time feature-film nominees except for Darabont, who was nominated in 1994 for "The Shawshank Redemption."

The winner of the DGA is practically guaranteed a win for Best Director in the Academy Award race. In its 50-year history, only four winners have not gone on to win the Oscar; Anthony Harvey (in 1968 for "The Lion Winter"), Francis Ford Coppola (in 1972 for "The Godfather"), Steven Spielberg (in 1985 for "The Color Purple") and Ron Howard (i

SANTA MONICA, Calif., January 17, 2000 -- So, what is Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All"?

Far be it for us to speculate, but it's worth noting that a Hawaiian newspaper reports that security guards at an island airport seized pot from the diva's carry-on bag last week.

Hilo's Tribune-Herald says guards found the weed (all 15.2 reputed grams of it) last Tuesday during a search of the Grammy-winning singer/actress' luggage. The bag was seized, but Houston went on to board a United Airlines flight for San Francisco anyway, escaping about 45 minutes before police arrived at Kahole-Kona International Airport, the paper said.

Hawaii police will refer the case to the local district attorney for possible prosecution, a process that could take up to a month, The Associated Press says. Possession of 15 grams of marijuana is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 30 days i

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 11, 2000 - London real-estate agents, beware: There's a new seller - and buyer - in the market. Madonna ("Evita"), who bought a $6.55 million mansion there a few weeks ago, is putting it back on the market in the wake of ex-Beatle George Harrison's stabbing Dec. 30 at his London mansion. According to the London Times, the Material Girl's security advisers told her that the four-story home she bought in the city's trendy Chelsea district was "perfectly visible from the road" and thereby unsuitable for a celebrity. But Big Ben shouldn't feel shafted; the singer/actress reportedly is back in London today searching for a new home with better security.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 30, 1999 -- Let the Pokémon backlash begin.

First, there was the recall of Burger King toys over safety concerns. Then there was the Michigan man who was granted a refund by a Kmart after saying his cute, little Pikachu doll dropped the F-bomb when its circuits were punched rapidly. (To be fair, cussing when one's circuits are being rapidly punched does seem a natural response.) Anyway, the man's calling for yet another nationwide recall.

And if that weren't enough, Nintendo, the gamemaker responsible for the video craze that spawned a TV show and hit movie, is being threatened by a lawsuit from spoon-bending psychic Uri Geller.

Geller says his image (not to mention his name) is being ripped off by the evil Pokémon character called "Un-Geller" (or, as its known in Japan, "Evil-Geller"). Un-Geller, by the way, carries spoon and boasts psychi
