HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 6, 2000 -- Steven Spielberg can add another award to his paperweight collection. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts honored the "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" auteur with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award on Saturday in a chi-chi $500 per plate reception in Los Angeles.

More than one thousand Hollywood luminaries, including DreamWorks partner Jeffrey Katzenberg, director Robert Zemeckis, wife Kate Capshaw and actor Ben Kinsley, were in attendance to witness Britain’s Prince Andrew present the award to the director.

"(The British film industry) has truly created more than a ripple for the last 65 years. It has been a tidal wave of creativity," Spielberg said at the event.

Besides "Jaws," the 64-year-old director is also known for era-defining films such as "E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial" and the "Indiana Jones" franchise.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 27, 2000 -- Warner Bros.' "The Whole Nine Yards" easily held on to first place despite tracking studies that had projected Dimension Films' opening of "Reindeer Games" would be the weekend's big winner.

"Reindeer Games " Although the tracking data had pointed to an opening of $10 million to $12 million for "Reindeer," no film managed to crack double digits last weekend. "Reindeer" wound up an embarrassed No. 3 for the weekend with a red face and nose. The weekend's only other wide opening, Paramount's "Wonder Boys," lived up to tracking expectations, finishing out of the Top Five, in seventh place, with a grim estimated $5.85 million.

The best-performing film of the bunch continued to be "Yards," Morgan Creek and Franchise Pictures' R-rated comedy. "Yards" continued laughing atop the chart in its second weekend with an estimated $9.61 million

2001-The race is going be tight this year.

As the TV season winds down and moves into the May sweeps, the major networks are duking it out for those coveted No. 1 spots, especially in the adults 18-49 group that advertisers love and the ego-boosting title of the most-watched network. This kind of tight primetime competition hasn't been seen in the TV arena in many years, but the reality TV explosion has truly changed the landscape and kept network execs on their toes.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 17, 2000 -- Steven Spielberg reportedly has won the race to bring Harry Potter to the big screen.

The Times of London says Spielberg will direct and produce "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," based on the hit children's book series about a schoolboy wizard.

Robert Zemeckis, Jonathan Demme and Mike Newell were among the directors Spielberg beat out for the movie, according to the paper.

Warner Bros., which owns the Harry Potter screen rights, dictated that Spielberg must make the film his next movie. Spielberg, whose docket also includes an adaptation of the best seller "Memoirs of a Geisha," had two possibles in the works: "A.I." and "Minority Report," both produced by his own studio, DreamWorks. "A.I" (the acronym for artificial intelligence) is based on a story outline by late filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. "Minority Report" is a
