•
HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 22, 2001 - Romance can be found in the most unexpected places, even on Death Row, and Billy Bob Thornton is just the man to find it.
Thornton (“Sling Blade”) and Wes Bentley (“American Beauty”) are negotiating to play a father and son team of prison executioners in the new film “Monster's Ball,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film, which will be directed by Marc Forster (“Loungers”), tells the tale of a man (Thornton) living with his son (Bentley) and racist father.
Reportedly, the plot of the film deals with Thornton and Bentley as they prepare for the execution of a black inmate. However, Thornton's character finds himself falling in love with the inmate's widow, who doesn't know about his part in her husband’s upcoming death.
The $10 million “Monster's Ball” has been stuck in development for years, and at one point, the project had att

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 27, 2000 -- Apparently, the honeymoon is over for Billy Bob Thornton, as the Oscar-winning actor/director was hospitalized over the weekend, and it has been speculated that the actor suffered a heart attack.
In an interview with USA Today, Thornton’s rep, Michelle Bega, denied the claim of a heart attack, and that Thornton, 45, was supposedly admitted to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Hospital for treatment for a viral infection and was released on Monday, September 25th.
There is some cause for an investigation. Mitchell Fink, the daily gossip columnist for the New York Daily News, claims that Thornton's attorney sent Fink a letter on Tuesday, September 26th, which stated that Thornton was still in the hospital and would be released within a day or two.
Thornton is no stranger to the gossip page lately. He has admitted to having an eating disorder, an

And Angelina goes: (1) "I nearly was killed last night, and it was the nicest thing anyone ever said to me.;" (2) "I'd kill anyone who even looked at him the wrong way.;" (3) "[W]e can go crazy."
And we go: Shut up.

HOLLYWOOD, May 9, 2000 -- It's easy to see what Angelina Jolie sees in Billy Bob Thornton. Why, clearly he's "the sexiest [expletive deleted] ... creature that ever lived." So says Jolie in an upcoming interview in Talk magazine. The chat was conducted before Jolie, 24, and Thornton, 44, tied the knot Friday in Las Vegas.
But even before she became Mrs. Billy Bob No. 5, Jolie was enamored of the actor/writer/director. Says Jolie: "I am madly in love with this man till the day I die."
The couple met on 1999's "Pushing Tin," where they played husband and wife. But Jolie says the love affair was not played out among the onset trailers. (Thornton was linked with Laura Dern at the time.) "I just went on with my life," Jolie says of the movie, "but I never really forgot [Billy Bob]."
The world's sexiest creatures, after all, are unforgettable that way.
•
HOLLYWOOD, May 10, 2000 -- Just in time for May sweeps, yet another celebrity ring exchange. In terms of sheer audience interest, this one's not gonna top Angelina and Billy Bob, but it is worth noting: Salsa star Marc Anthony, 30, wed former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, 25, on Tuesday night in Las Vegas, broadcast reports say.
The ceremony took place after the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards in Los Angeles. Anthony didn't win anything, so he got married instead.
The two became engaged in October. He is best known for the 1999 crossover hit "I Need to Know."

HOLLYWOOD, June 13, 2000 -- Andy Griffith is resting at his North Carolina home after enduring quadruple bypass surgery and a reported heart attack, it has been revealed today. The 74-year-old actor of "Matlock" fame (and "Andy Griffith Show" legend) went under the knife May 9 for the bypass procedure, a spokesman for the actor's agent said. According to broadcast reports, a heart attack occurred a few weeks after that.
Still, despite all the scares, the Griffith spokesman says the star's prognosis is "excellent," and a complete recovery is expected.
Griffith will next be seen in the upcoming Billy Bob Thornton movie "Daddy and Them."

As the 300 guests at the Salon des Ambassadeurs dined on a Mediterranean fish plate with assorted mushrooms, Piper-Heidsieck champagne and a Palme d'Or strawberry delight, the 54th Cannes International Film Festival handed out its top honors Sunday.
Jodie Foster, who bowed out earlier this year as jury president, fulfilled her obligation as the closing ceremony's host. The awards were characterized as oddly conventional, with the 10-member jury sticking to more established filmmakers rather than the fresher talent from the 23 films in competition. In contrast, last year's jury came under fire for giving the top prize - the Palme d'Or - to Lars von Trier's controversial and divisive Dancer in the Dark.

Gus Van Sant, the eclectic director of such films as To Die For and Finding Forrester, will reteam with his Good Will Hunting stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck (yes, Ben's little brother) for a new film, Jerry. According to the buzz at Cannes, the film is being kept closely under wraps, so there's not much known on the subject matter. Could be about a mouse or a TV evangelist or maybe a raunchy TV talk show host. What is known is that the project is being put together by the William Morris Agency Independent department, with co-heads Cassian Elwes and Rena Ronson negotiating the deal.

As film festivals have become ubiquitous, status and distinction have become increasingly important. And no festival has the status and distinction that the Cannes International Film Festival has.
Nothing can beat the mix of midwinter sun, Cannes cachet, bonhomie, expensive sunglasses and the eclectic smorgasbord of big-bucks productions and auteur-driven independents.
The 54th edition of the film festival, which began Wednesday, doesn't disappoint.
The festival's festivities will kick off - literally - with a lavish and luscious flick, Moulin Rouge. A cancan revue, backed by the film's interior sets, will take place near Cannes' old port, starting the party, and the film's buzz should dominate the first day.

Actor Denzel Washington has finally received the greenlight to direct his first feature film for Fox Searchlight studios, keeping up with the trend of actors wanting to take a stab behind the camera.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 22, 2000 -- Santa is not the only big boy coming out to play this Christmas holiday.
Things are certainly looking up in December after Mel Gibson's $34 million-plus record-setting opening last weekend at the box office for "What Women Want."
And judging from the big names, business is only going to be better this weekend as heavily anticipated films such as Tom Hanks' "Cast Away" and Nicolas Cage's "Family Man" bow nationwide today.
"It's going to be a huge weekend this holiday. I can't see how it can't be, with all the hot openings and strong holdovers," Brandon Gray, editor of boxofficemojo.com, told Hollywood.com.
And despite all the new entries breathing down its neck, Gray maintains that Gibson's "What Women Want" might not go quietly down the rankings and that the battle to watch this four-day holiday at the box office will be between

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 15, 2000 -- Even dreams of being a millionaire becomes passe after a little while.
And that's perhaps why the once ubergameshow "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" is upping its loot.
According to USA Today, the titular ABC quiz show -- which has brought daytime talker Regis Philbin to primetime TV -- is increasing its top prize to save itself from declining ratings and waning audience interest.
Here's how the monetary hike is going to work: Starting with the Jan. 4 episode, the show's producer will tag on an additional $10K for each day that the million-dollar jackpot isn't hit.
Let the games begin. PAPA DON'T PREACH: Once your little girl, always your little girl. And it doesn't matter if she is now all grown up, married and is an international superstar.

HOLLYWOOD, May 11, 2000 -- Celebrity marriages are hot, Hollywood.com has confirmed. On the heels of this scoop comes word today from Noah Wyle's publicist that the "ER" doctor wed longtime girlfriend Tracy Warbin on Saturday near Santa Barbara, Calif. For those of you keeping score at home, that's the third celebrity marriage to make headlines this week, after Angelina and Billy Bob and Marc Anthony and the ex-beauty queen.
According to the new edition of People magazine, Hollywood types in attendance at Wyle's shindig included "ER" co-star Eriq LaSalle.
Warbin, 32, is a makeup artist. She and Wyle, 28, have been together since 1996 and became engaged in March 1999.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 7, 2000 -- No denying this one: Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton are officially power-couple wife and husband. Get that In Style wedding spread rolling! The duo, subject of (discounted) marital rumors earlier in the week, wed Friday afternoon at the Little Chapel of the West on the Las Vegas Strip, the chapel owner has told the press.
Jolie is 24, Thornton 44. It's her second marriage, his fifth. She most recently was linked with her brother, he with Laura Dern. She has an Oscar (for 1999's "Girl, Interrupted"), he has an Oscar (for 1996's "Sling Blade").
She has a big Billy Bob tattoo on her arm, he has a big, you know, heart.
