Based on Susanna Kaysen's account of being trapped in a mental institution in the late '60s, director James Mangold's "Girl, Interrupted" is a semi-involving tale of identity and belonging featuring a solid performance from Winona Ryder and a spirited, star-making turn from Angelina Jolie.

Ryder stars as Susanna herself, an unhappy, upper-middle-class high school graduate uncertain about her place in American society circa 1967-68. While being moody, depressed and promiscuous might seem normal in the 1990s, in the late '60s, it's enough for Susanna's parents to seriously wonder about their daughter.

After chasing a bottle of alcohol with a bottle of aspirin, the girl's psychiatrist immediately diagnoses her as a borderline personality and subsequently commits her to Claymoore Hospital. That's where the opening line of the movie comes in: "Maybe I was really crazy, maybe i

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 8, 2000 -- Has the Hollywood backlash begun for Robert Downey Jr.?

The Hollywood Reporter says today that the recently busted actor is in the process of being replaced in the star-studded film "America's Sweethearts."

Currently, Hank Azaria is in talks to take over Downey's lot among a cast which includes Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack.

Downey joined the Revolution Studios project in October, but his recent drug arrest in Palm Springs, Calif., and impending Dec. 27 court date in Indio have rendered him unavailable, to say the least.

Shooting for the film will begin in January and is expected to end in mid-March. 'POINT' BLANK: Tom Cruise and George Clooney thought about doing it, but Richard Gere is actually going to do it.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 15, 2000 -- Snoopy Dogg's in the movie house.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the gangsta rapper might join actors Omar Gooding and Taraji Henson and singer Tyrese in director John Singleton's new project "Baby Boy."

The film, written by Singleton, is about a young man (Tyrese) who fathers a child but refuses to accept the responsibility of adulthood. Gooding will play his older brother; Henson will play the character's girlfriend; and Snoop will play her ex-boyfriend.

GUY DOES 'TIME': The Reporter says that Guy Pearce, who you might or might not remember as a soldier in "Rules of Engagement," is in talks to star in the adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic "The Time Machine."

Pearce's previous film credits also include the Oscar-winning films "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and "L.A. Confidential."

Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" and George Clooney's "The Perfect Storm" should spark big box office fireworks this weekend.

"Patriot," the R-rated period piece drama from Columbia Pictures and Centropolis Entertainment, marched into 3,061 theaters Wednesday. It grossed an encouraging estimated $5.0 million ($1,633 per theater) in its first skirmishes with moviegoers.

"Patriot's" overall first-choice tracking of 26% has most insiders predicting it will win the five-day battle that ends with the Fourth of July holiday. After its $5 million start, it could wind up with a first place finish of $30 million or more for three days (Friday-Sunday) and $40 million or more for five days (Wednesday-Sunday).

"If you extrapolate from other performances on this kind of holiday, it could very well get to $30 million," a studio source explains. "It's a 2 hour 40 minute
