CANNES, May 11, 2000 -- It's official -- the famed festivities here have begun, even if the obligatory red carpet wasn't ready until the late afternoon. But a lack of carpet didn't stop the sun and stars from converging in the daylight this morning when Uma Thurman and Gerard Depardieu arrived with their posses for a screening of "Vatel," which opened the 53rd Cannes Film Festival.

The wind ravaged the Mediterranean waters (magically sparing Uma's golden locks) as cameras flashed and fans clapped. In this day of cutting-edge digital media, it's still fun to revel in the old-fashioned glamour of the young and beautiful (not to mention statuesque and blonde) Uma co-starring with the rugged, debonaire (you gotta throw in some French when you're on the Riviera) andmuch, much older Gerard.

The excitement here never dies. The next big stir was the dramatic arrival of the jury

LEOFEST TO LAUNCH: It's not just Santa who will be arriving any day soon. Leonardo DiCaprio will be delivering the official version of his LeoFest International Online Short Film Festival to the Web right after the New Year/new millennium celebration (a work-in-progress site is up now).

LeoFest is calling for anyone, anywhere (Tonga! Iceland! Wichita! You name it!) to submit for consideration a film of up to 15 minutes in any of the following categories: narrative, documentary, animation and alternative. Filmmakers will have to make transfers before they submit since LeoFest says that no film stock of any gauge will be accepted (Take that, Eastman Kodak!).

While prizes haven't yet been announced, we've heard that Leo himself will be awarding grand prizes of $20,000 to all finalists, and it's money right out of his own pocket. And we bet that the talent scouts at Leo's all

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 12, 2001 -- Calista Flockhart's biological clock is ticking, and you better believe that she's doing something about it.

The "Ally McBeal" actress confirmed through her publicist that she has indeed -- as the tabloid The National Enquirer has been rumoring -- adopted a baby boy.

"I have always wanted to adopt a child, and I am overjoyed that I have been blessed with a beautiful and healthy son," said Flockhart, 36, in a brief statement.

Despite the new addition to Flockhart's life, the actress plans to continue working on the hit Fox comedy and intends on giving birth someday and might adopt another child in the future.

"I'm completely enchanted and awestruck. I feel extremely fortunate and grateful that I work for such a supportive company that offers a wonderful child care facility, enabling me to spend a lot of time with my son while I'm

HOLLYWOOD, May 24, 2000 -- It’s the kiss that’s on everyone’s lips this week. After a season of teenage angst and longing, tonight’s season finale of “Dawson’s Creek” (8 p.m. EDT/PDT, WB) features the first passionate homosexual kiss between two men to ever take place on primetime television. In the episode, titled “True Love,” Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith), who came out last season after briefly dating Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), shares an onscreen kiss with friend-turned-boyfriend Ethan (Adam Kauffman).

No less than the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has branded the smooch "historic." And while the kiss between Jack and Ethan might indeed be primetimes's first romantic kiss between two men, it's hardly the first gay kiss on the tube.

Herein are some examples of primetime television’s gay and lesbian smooches:

"Melrose Place": On May 18, 1994, Matt (Dou

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30, 2001 -- Nominations for the 7th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today in Los Angeles at L.A.'s Pacific Design Center.

The unique show, honoring performers from 13 movie and TV categories, will air on TNT, Sunday, March 11 from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

The nominations in the movie categories aren’t surprising, with frontrunners Russell Crowe’s from “Gladiator” and Golden Globe winner Julia Roberts from “Erin Brockovich” easily making the list. Golden Globe winners Tom Hanks for “Cast Away” and Kate Hudson for “Almost Famous” snag nominations as well.

Several nominees in the television categories are returning to try their luck again, namely James Gandolfini and Edie Falco from “The Sopranos,” who both won in their respective categories last year. Also, die-hard dramas, such as “ER” and “Law & Order,” are back fo

Robert Downey Jr. can't talk his way out of this one.

Lawyers for the troubled actor were unable to reach a plea agreement with prosecutors on the drug possession charges that stem from the actor's arrest last November in a Palm Springs hotel room, where police allegedly found cocaine and the prescription drug Valium.

The arrest came three months after Downey's release from prison, where he spent a year on drug charges. Downey now faces a trial and could go to jail for almost five years if convicted.

Outside the court on Thursday, Downey's lawyer Daniel Brookman told Reuters that prosecutors "have made an offer that does call for some sort of restraint on Mr. Downey's freedom."

Brookman complained to Reuters that Downey was arrested on an anonymous tip, which he described as "the lowest form of information you can get," and said

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 1, 2000 - This one just gets weirder and weirder. Now in its 27th year, the People's Choice Awards have announced their nominees and the results are even more worth a recount than that mess in Florida.

Culled by a nationwide Gallup poll of 213 million Americans, according to Reuters reports, the voters picked "The Patriot," "Remember the Titans" and "The Green Mile" as best film nominees. But the problem is, "The Green Mile," starring Tom Hanks, was released last year. Hmmm.

The award show, which honors those in film, music and TV, will pay tribute to favorites like Mel Gibson, Britney Spears and, um, Alabama.

On the TV front, Michael Richards ("The Michael Richards Show") and John Goodman ("Normal, Ohio") are each nominated in the favorite male performer in a new TV series category along with "Ed's" Tom Cavanagh -- despite the fact that these sho

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 24, 2000 -- Will Will Truman get lucky? Will Chandler and Monica tie the knot? Will Dawson and Pacey make up? And what's up with "Popular"?!

Those are some of the questions that have been posed and that will be answered during the fall season of television.

Herein is a critique of the fall seasons of 10 TV series that Hollywood.com staffers watch on a weekly basis:

"Will & Grace," NBC, Thursdays, 9 p.m. ET

Is "Will & Grace," the as-of-late-sometimes-hilarious sitcom about a gay man named Will Truman (Eric McCormack, who looks tan and really sexy this season), his best gay friend Jack McFarland (the always funny, over the top Emmy winner Sean Hayes), his best female friend Grace Adler (Debra Messing), and her lush of a socialite "employee" Karen Walker (Emmy winner Megan Mullally), falling from, er, grace this season? "Will & Grace" sadly ha

HOLLYWOOD, June 30, 2000 -- And you thought "Charlie's Angels" was the troubled Cameron Diaz movie. Try "Things You Can Tell By Just Looking at Her." The ensemble chick flick -- featuring Diaz, Calista Flockhart and Glenn Close (among others) -- has been yanked from its planned theatrical release, with MGM shuttling it off instead to pay-cable TV.

The film, which was to have hit theaters in July (after originally being scheduled for the spring), will now make its coast-to-coast debut on Showtime in early 2001, today's Daily Variety says.

"Things" played at this year's Sundance and Cannes film festivals, but distributor MGM says it just felt the flick's "intimate storylines" (read: no explosions) would play better on TV than at the multiplex.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. March 28, 2000 -- We knew Gil Bellows was leaving "Ally McBeal." We knew his character had a brain tumor (as diagnosed last week). And maybe we'd even read that he (the character) was going to exit the show by, you know, kicking the bucket. But did we know he was going to drop dead last night?

Not all of us, apparently.

The Internet is reeling today with debate over the death of "Ally McBeal" lawyer Billy Alan Thomas, who in Monday's episode gave new meaning to the term "closing argument," passing away in court, felled by a cerebral hemorrhage entirely unrelated to that brain-tumor thing.

In a post entitled "Good Lord He Died," one fan on the alt.tv.ally-mcbeal newsgroup writes: "I CANNOT believe it! I was totally unprepared for it ... Was there any spoiler that predicted this?"

The consensus among Netizens is, yes, there were spoiler

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- The infectious bug that has been plaguing TV series of late -- you know, the "I feel that my time with the show is up and I've decided to move on" epidemic -- has claimed another victim.

The latest casualty is none other than "Veronica's Closet's" Kathy Najimy. Trade papers report today that the actress, who plays Olive, Veronica's (Kirstie Alley) trusted sidekick and confidant, will bid farewell to the NBC comedy at the end of this season.

Najimy tells Variety that her decision to leave the show is based purely on personal reasons. With "Veronica's Closet" behind, Najimy reportedly plans to spend more time with her 3-year-old daughter, not to mention more of the same said time on a would-be "feature career."

Of course, the concept of "leaving" "Veronica's Closet" might become a moot point. The unbeloved comed

PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 10, 2000 -- If the Gallup pollsters of America had their way, "The Sixth Sense" and "Big Daddy" would sweep the Academy Awards. The two films dominated the film categories at the 26th Annual People's Choice Awards on Sunday night at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

"The Sixth Sense," which also stands a strong chance of Oscar nomination, won awards for Favorite Motion Picture and Favorite Dramatic Motion Picture; its star, its star, Bruce Willis, picked up the award for Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Drama.

"Big Daddy," which stands virtually no chance at an Oscar nomination (unless voters suddenly concoct a Best Achievement in Spitballs category), won for Favorite Comedy Motion Picture; Adam Sandler won Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Comedy.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2000 -- And now we know: "Ally McBeal" (the series, if not the character) will not end up with Billy Thomas.

At least that's the way it looks with word that actor Gil Bellows -- Billy to Calista Flockhart's titular heroine -- will depart hit Fox legal-eagle series at the end of this season.

The network has confirmed that Bellows' Billy Thomas character is to leave the Cage/Fish firm in the spring. But hope lives -- at least when Fox notes that Bellows/Billy will be back on a recurring basis next TV year. No details on how many episodes that gig will entail or under what circumstances the Billy character will be written off.

According to gossip maven Liz Smith, Bellows wants to (what else?) pursue other/different opportunities -- like, um, the movies. The 32-year-old actor recently completed work on the big-screen romantic-drama "Beauti
