SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 17, 2000 -- There was lots of Olympic Gold but very little box office gold this weekend.

Insiders had anticipated low grosses and a close race for first place, and that's exactly what they got. With ticket sales down over 33 percent from this time last year, it took only $5.7 million for Universal's "The Watcher" to nail down the top spot.

Key films in the marketplace - those grossing $500,000 or more for the weekend - did approximately $47.58 million. Distribution sources said Sunday morning they believed that was the lowest total since the weekend of Sept. 11-13, 1998, when key films took in $48.85 million.

Was it the Olympics that killed the movie business this weekend? Key distribution executives share some thoughts about that in today's report (see OLYMPICS IMPACT below).

The weekend's biggest success story was DreamWor

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 8, 2000 -- Carmen Electra might be eye candy to some, but the model-actress doesn’t like the way Candie’s Inc. has made her look.

The former “Baywatch” actress filed a lawsuit against the perfume and shoe company, saying that it used her name and image improperly on its Web site after a four-month ad campaign with her and ex-husband-basketball player Dennis Rodman, Reuters reports. The suit filed on Tuesday in federal court seeks unspecified damages.

HERE COMES SANTA GERE: Call him Santa Gere. Business owners in Kittanning, Pa., a small town 35 miles from Pittsburgh, are being asked to keep their Christmas decorations up through March to film Richard Gere's newest film “The Motherman Prophecies.”

So it looks like the holiday season will be extended this year thanks to the actor. Filming is scheduled to begin in February, according to The Associated

SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 6, 2000 -- "Scary Movie" has a good shot at scaring up this weekend's biggest grosses.

"I think it's going to open to north of $20 million, maybe $25 million," a studio executive speculates in view of its 27 percent overall first-choice tracking. "It's going to be between 'Scary Movie' and 'Perfect Storm' for first place. Both could be in the mid-twenties, but 'Scary Movie' could take it."

"It skews very high for the under 25 group," another insider adds. "It's 43 percent first choice for males and 45 percent for females. So it's obviously young teenagers. It could open to $25-30 million."

The R-rated teen appeal comedy from Miramax's Dimension Films label combines gross-out comedy with a spoof of classic horror flicks. It is opening very wide; Dimension was still doing its final tabulations, but insiders figure it will go into 2,800-plu

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 23, 2000 - Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electr, you're off the hook.

You no longer own the title of Marriage That Ended Before Halftime. That honor now goes to Rick Rockwell and Darva Conger, also known as the "Multimillionaire" and the woman who wanted to marry him.

The couple, united in holy matrimony at the conclusion of Fox's first - and only - episode of "Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?" are now headed for splitsville. Conger, 34, said in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" today that she made an "error in judgment" and that she was seeking annulment.

"I wish I had [had] the moral fortitude to walk away," Conger said of the on-screen wedding.

The show, which aired Feb. 15, united a rich man and willing woman selected among 50 others through a beauty contest/dating game. After the wedding they took off for a Ca.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 19, 2000 -- She set an extra-terrestrial free, set some houses on fire and set a new trend in Cinderellas. But who knew Drew Barrymore could make people laugh?

The National Association of Theater Owners, apparently. The 24-year-old actress, who starred in last spring's hit comedy "Never Been Kissed," has been named ShoWest 2000 Comedy Star of the Year, the first actress to receive the award.

The actress, who will be honored at the ShoWest convention March 9, is currently working on the oft-discussed, big-screen adaptation of "Charlie's Angels," co-starring Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. Now that Drew's a branded funnywoman, does that mean she's taking the Kate Jackson role?

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 26, 1999 -- Perennial single guy Jerry Seinfeld finally threw in the towel Christmas Day, wedding public-relations executive Jessica Sklar in a small, hush-hush ceremony in New York City.

It is the first marriage for Seinfeld, 45; the second (in 18 months) for Sklar, 28. The bride's initial husband-and-wife teamup (with theater scion Eric Nederlander) ended when she started dating Seinfeld weeks after she returned from her 1998 honeymoon.

Seinfeld is, of course, best known for his long-running self-titled TV sitcom, "Seinfeld." Sklar is best known for dating Seinfeld.

According to the New York Post, some 40 guests watched the couple exchange their vows at a traditional Jewish service. Not among those 40 guests: the groom's ex-"Seinfeld" cohorts Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards.
