"Three Kings," David O. Russell's Gulf War actioner, was named Best Picture by the Boston Film Critics Association today.

The film, which also won Russell a Best Director award, follows American soldiers who find a map in the desert leading to an arsenal of stolen gold bullion. As they hunt for the treasure, the trio encounter atrocities of war and face moral dilemmas.

Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube, "Three Kings" grossed about $58 million at the box office and was earlier named one of the National Board of Review's top 10 of the year. It's the second year in a row Clooney has starred in the association's top picture; the 1998 Best Picture was Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight," co-starring Jennifer Lopez.

Hilary Swank picked up her third critics' award of 1999, named Best Actress for "Boys Don't Cry." She plays Brandon Teena, a Nebraska woma

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 10, 2000 -- And the best picture of 1999 according to the National Society of Film Critics is ... a tie.

The period piece "Topsy-Turvy" and the eccentric "Being John Malkovich" shared top honors at the group's awards ceremony Saturday in New York. It's the first time in the society's 34-year history that the best picture vote has been evenly split between two films.

"Topsy-Turvy," a Mike Leigh film about operetta composers Gilbert and Sullivan, had previously been recognized as the top film of '99 by the New York Film Critics Circle. The co-win for "Being John Malkovich" was its first from major critics' group, although screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's victory for best screenplay mirrored previous accolades from the Los Angeles, Boston and Toronto film critics.

"Topsy's" Mike Leigh was tapped best director, besting runners-up David O.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 3, 2000 -- Director Sam Mendes' "American Beauty" took top honors today as the Online Film Critics Society handed down its third annual awards. The quirky tale of modern-day life in a suburban nightmare was named best picture by the 112-member group of Web-based writers and critics.

"American Beauty" also took nods for Mendes (best director) and star Kevin Spacey (best actor). The film leads all comers going into the Jan. 20 Golden Globes, with six nominations.

Fellow Golden Globe nominee Reese Witherspoon won best actress accolades from the cyber scribes for her role in the high school comedy "Election."

In the supporting categories, Haley Joel Osment ("The Sixth Sense") and Catherine Keener ("Being John Malkovich") were top vote getters for actor and actress, respectively.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 25, 2000 -- Call it an act of justice or just plain old good taste.

"Election" finally got the kind of props it deserved.

After getting all but snubbed by Oscar voters, the critically acclaimed high school satire, starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick, was vindicated at today's IFP/West's 15th Annual Independent Spirit Awards, taking a field-best three mentions for best indie feature, best screenplay and best director.

The indie-minded types, who gathered here in a tent for the afternoon beachfront ceremony, also assured Oscar nominees Hilary Swank, Charlie Kaufman, Richard Farnsworth and Chloë Sevginy of glory -- regardless of whether Academy voters deign them worthy of gold statuettes Sunday.

Swank, who faces the daunting task of trying to defeat Mrs. Warren Beatty (aka Annette Bening) in the Oscar race, was tapped

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 10, 2000 -- Pretty woman Julia Roberts is certainly no stranger to revolution -- or shall we say Joe Roth's Revolution Studios.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the $20 million per pic starlet will lend her star power to the preliminarily titled "Project 3" for the titular studio. The project will reteam Roberts with "The Mexican" helmer Gore Verbinski, who became available after Leonardo DiCaprio dropped out of DreamWorks' "Catch Me If You Can," which he was set to direct.

Reminiscent of George Cukor's 1994 classic "Gaslight," "Project 3" is described as a story wherein a man tries to convince his wife that she is going crazy.

Besides this film, Roberts is also committed to other Revolution projects such as "American Sweethearts" and "Replay."

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 1, 2000 -- Holy Fight Club, Batman!

Can you imagine Brad Pitt as the Caped Crusader?

Warner Bros. latest effort to revive its comatose Batman franchise might involve the "Meet Joe Black" star assuming the role formerly filled by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.

EW Online is reporting today that Darren Aronofsky, who has been rumored to inherit the Batman franchise's directorial duties, recently met with Pitt. However, it's unclear whether Aronofsky wants Pitt to play Batman or ... Chuck Barris.

Yes, that's Chuck Barris of "The Gong Show" fame.

See, Aronofsky is not only talking to Warners about "Batman 5" but also about taking over the reins of the Barris biopic "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," which has a screenplay written by Charlie Kaufman of "Being John Malkovich" fame.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 10, 2000 -- Agent Clarice Starling could be back on the case in the big-screen version of "Hannibal." After Jodie Foster dropped out to direct "Flora Plum," the project looked to be filed away -- or at least returned to producer Dino DeLaurentiis.

Now it appears that "Magnolia" star Julianne Moore could be ready for her FBI badge and power suit. Daily Variety reports that the busy actress (she appeared in five movies in 1999) is in strong contention for active duty. Although Universal tells Hollywood.com that the actress hasn't committed yet, the studio may very well put her on the front line.

Variety says the role Moore is looking at is indeed that of Clarice Starling -- and not an all-new FBI agent character, as had been rumored when Foster bailed on the project.

Moore is a wild card in a "Hannibal" derby where Cate Blanchett, Hilary

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- Film nominations for the 52nd Annual Writers Guild Awards were handed down today, and, with few exceptions, the list was surprise-free.

The usual award-show suspects, including Golden Globe screenplay champ "American Beauty," were honored for their excellence in screenplays.

The most notable surprise nod was perhaps for Lewis Colick's adaptation for the critically lauded (but mostly overlooked) "October Sky."

One notable snub came in the form of "The Hurricane," which last month took University of Southern California's annual Scripter Award for best film adaptation. While a fast-starter on the buzz front, the movie has come under attack of late for flying fast and loose with the story of wrongly imprisoned boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter.

The guild's East and West Coast voting bodies decided upon nomin

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 1, 2000 -- "The Insider's" Russell Crowe is looking to get the skinny on Claire Danes in the Jodie Foster-directed drama "Flora Plum."

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the actor is in negotiations to join Foster and company on the Depression-era romance, which is slated to begin filming in late summer or early fall.

The story involves a circus freak played by Crowe who falls for a penniless girl (Danes) after taking her in and helping her become a star. Steven Rodgers ("Hope Floats") is the screenwriter.
