SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 16, 2000 -- Tired of Oscar-worthy dramas? In the mood for (hey!) a teen flick? Your time is here (again).
"Down to You," a Generation Y romance starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Stiles, leads the pack of new releases this week, presumably to the delight of the nation's mall rats.
Elsewhere, a host of critically acclaimed (or in teenspeak: boring and long) films previously in limited engagements will add screens. That list includes: "Angela's Ashes," "A Map of the World" and "Titus".
Here's a complete list of films opening this week:
FRIDAY:
"Angela's Ashes" (Paramount) -- Adapted from Frank McCourt's Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir, this film documents the author's childhood in Ireland during the 1930s and '40s. Emily Watson ("Hilary & Jackie") and Robert Carlyle ("Trainspotting") co-star as Frank's working-class parent

"Three Kings," David O. Russell's Gulf War actioner, was named Best Picture by the Boston Film Critics Association today.
The film, which also won Russell a Best Director award, follows American soldiers who find a map in the desert leading to an arsenal of stolen gold bullion. As they hunt for the treasure, the trio encounter atrocities of war and face moral dilemmas.
Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube, "Three Kings" grossed about $58 million at the box office and was earlier named one of the National Board of Review's top 10 of the year. It's the second year in a row Clooney has starred in the association's top picture; the 1998 Best Picture was Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight," co-starring Jennifer Lopez.
Hilary Swank picked up her third critics' award of 1999, named Best Actress for "Boys Don't Cry." She plays Brandon Teena, a Nebraska woma

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 17, 2000 -- Yet another awards ceremony honoring the same people and the same films were held this past weekend -- this time by the International Press Academy for its fourth annual Golden Satellite Awards.
Among the winners were some of the award circuit's established favorites including "The Insider", which took top honors as best dramatic film. Its helmer, Michael Mann, was named best director. Previous best-film laurels for "The Insider" came from the likes of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
Spike Jonze's first feature "Being John Malkovich" was named best comedy or musical, with the film's show-stealing co-star (and New York Film Critics Circle winner) Catherine Keener taking the award for best supporting actress.
"Boys Don't Cry" actress Hilary Swank continued her winning streak w

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 10, 2000 -- And the best picture of 1999 according to the National Society of Film Critics is ... a tie.
The period piece "Topsy-Turvy" and the eccentric "Being John Malkovich" shared top honors at the group's awards ceremony Saturday in New York. It's the first time in the society's 34-year history that the best picture vote has been evenly split between two films.
"Topsy-Turvy," a Mike Leigh film about operetta composers Gilbert and Sullivan, had previously been recognized as the top film of '99 by the New York Film Critics Circle. The co-win for "Being John Malkovich" was its first from major critics' group, although screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's victory for best screenplay mirrored previous accolades from the Los Angeles, Boston and Toronto film critics.
"Topsy's" Mike Leigh was tapped best director, besting runners-up David O.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 23, 2000 -- Beatles child Stella McCartney may have been named Designer of the Year at this year's VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, but it was her father who stole the show. Paul McCartney surprised his daughter at the fashion awards on Friday night, presenting her with the designer award for her work at Chloe. The former Beatles singer received a standing ovation from the audience.
Also bringing the high-fashion audience to its feet at the Theater at Madison Square Garden was Godfather of Soul James Brown, who joined singer Lenny Kravitz on stage to perform "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag."
Supermodel Giselle Bundchen (reportedly Leonardo DiCaprio's main squeeze) and Cuba Gooding Jr. served as co-hosts for the annual fashion awards show.
The in fashion at this year's show, broadcast on VH1, was leather.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 5, 2000 -- Well, the February sweeps are finally over.
Once the remainder of NBC's "10th Kingdom" is flushed from the system, it will all be just a distant memory. Regis Philbin won, if you were scoring along at home. If the February sweeps were like network TV's playoffs, Regis was Michael Jordan -- only shorter and dressed like a bootlegger from the 1920s.
The good news? Now that the quarter-hour numbers don't mean as much to the bean counters, you might find a few higher-quality shows on the air -- not that Fox's "Robbie Knievel: Head On Train Jump" wasn't "high quality" as head on train jumps go. ... But, um ... Hey, everybody, let's get ready for those mid-season replacements!
-- Right after HBO's "The Sopranos" airs today at 8 p.m. (this is old news, but yes, the series really is as good as everybody says it is), stay tuned for "If T

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 19, 2000 -- She set an extra-terrestrial free, set some houses on fire and set a new trend in Cinderellas. But who knew Drew Barrymore could make people laugh?
The National Association of Theater Owners, apparently. The 24-year-old actress, who starred in last spring's hit comedy "Never Been Kissed," has been named ShoWest 2000 Comedy Star of the Year, the first actress to receive the award.
The actress, who will be honored at the ShoWest convention March 9, is currently working on the oft-discussed, big-screen adaptation of "Charlie's Angels," co-starring Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu. Now that Drew's a branded funnywoman, does that mean she's taking the Kate Jackson role?
