Hollywood opens its presents early this weekend with the arrival of a few deluxe-wrapped packages full of good holiday cheer.
"Anna and the King," a richly decorated version of the classic musical "The King and I" sans the music, should pique the interests of romantic moviegoers young and old. It stars Academy Award winner Jodie Foster and Hong Kong action icon Chow Yun-Fat.
Gifts for the kids come in the form of the studio movies "Stuart Little" and "Bicentennial Man." Based on a beloved children's novel, "Stuart Little" tells the live-action adventures of a pet mouse, with a voice provided by Michael J. Fox. In "Bicentennial Man," Robin Williams undergoes a different kind of transformation, playing an android who learns what it means to be human. "Mrs. Doubtfire" director Chris Columbus helms the film.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., February 28, 2000 -- Just when you thought the "Batman" franchise had left superhero movies creatively bankrupt, caped crusaders and masked villains are invading Hollywood once again.
This summer's release of "X-Men" promises to be the first in a long list of big-budget comic book adaptations. Many of these were on the back burner for several years but have been making headlines in recent weeks, ever since it was announced that Sam Raimi will likely be the director of Sony's long-awaited "Spider-Man" movie.
"The Greatest American Hero" The latest, and perhaps most bizarre, project announced is a big-screen version of "The Greatest American Hero," the early 1980s TV show that starred William Katt as bumbling superguy Ralph Hinkley (the character's surname was changed to "Hanley" after John Hinckley's attempted assassination of President Reagan). Spac

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 23, 2000 -- Jodie Foster's played an English schoolteacher, an FBI agent and a rocket scientist. Now she'll stretch further as a one-legged nun in "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys."
Reports today say the two-time Oscar winner has agreed to play a supporting role in the $15-20 million film for Initial Entertainment Group. She'll also produce.
Shooting's scheduled to begin May 1. Commercial director Peter Care will helm the script by Jeff Stockwell and Michael Petroni. Based on Chris Fuhrman's novel, the story's about a group of Catholic youths who get caught drawing an obscene comic book. Next, they outdo themselves by planning a heist that will make them legends.
NOW, STOP ASKING! The speculation is over. (Really.) Steven Spielberg has officially said thanks but no thanks to Warner Bros.' "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" -- the

It looks like tough sledding for Hollywood this pre-Christmas weekend, according to distribution executives with an eye on tracking study data.None of the three new wide releases appears likely to open impressively.
"It doesn't look too exciting in terms of the openings," said one studioexecutive. "The first choice on 'Bicentennial Man' is running only like 8%. Now, admittedly, it's (only mid-week) but I would think they would like to have been in double digits by now."
Buena Vista/Touchstone and Columbia Pictures' PG-rated sci-fi fantasy "Bicentennial Man," directed by Chris Columbus and starring Robin Williams, opens Friday at about 2,200 theaters.
While 2,200 theaters is certainly a wide break, it's not as wide as last weekend's theater count for "Toy Story 2" (3,257), "The Green Mile" (2,875), "The World Is Not Enough" (3,063), "End Of Days" (2,652) or "Sleepy Ho

Hollywood is expecting Warner Bros. and Castle Rock Entertainment's opening of "The Green Mile" to walk off with the most box office green this weekend.
The R-rated drama, written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tom Hanks, kicks off at more than 2,850 theaters.
"'Toy Story [2],' if it's down in the neighborhood of 35-40%, is $16-18 million. And I think 'Green Mile' beats that based on the tracking. They're sitting there with an 18% first choice right now," one studio executive said earlier this week."
"It is high," he said of the tracking results. "Although I understand the reviews are not very good, with Tom Hanks (starring), that's $20 million-plus."
While a $20 million-plus opening is certainly very attractive, it's not spectacular. One of the factors working against a bigger first weekend for the adult appeal "Green" is that adults are bu

SANTA MONICA, Calif. March 29, 2000 -- Good news, depending on your love and/tolerance for "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Bicentennial Man": Chris Columbus has been signed to direct "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." In a bit of even better news, this means there's no way Columbus will possibly have time to ruin, er, helm either the planned "Spider-man" flick or the "Planet of the Apes" remake -- two movies the "Nine Months" auteur had been attached to in recent years. (The "Apes" gig is done deal anyway -- Tim Burton's set for that one.)
As for the "Potter" movie: It'll be the first in what Warner Bros. is hoping will be a kiddie franchise based on the mega-selling kiddie book series.
Shooting could begin as soon as this summer, with a Summer 20001 release planned.
Columbus comes to the project after mentor Steven Spielberg famously turned down the project.

HOLLYWOOD, May 19, 2000 -- The price of real estate may have skyrocketed in recent years, but Hollywood studios can still buy up choice property, it seems, by merely running big ads in Variety. Case in point: Last week, Universal announced a May 11, 2001, release for "The Mummy Returns," the now-in-development sequel to last year's embalmed-monster hit.
The implicit message in the full-color, two-page spread was more than "Hey, we're making another mummy movie." It was a pre-emptive strike aimed at all the other studios that are now arranging their own Summer 2001 slates.
Not that studios (readily) admit to such tactics.
"The real reason [for the ad] is the first 'Mummy' was such a huge success for us, and we are in production on the sequel, and there's been so much interest and anticipation about the movie that we thought we'd let everyone know the [release] dat
