Lions Gate, which is now filming American Psycho 2: The Girl Who Wouldn't Die, is considering the possibility of mounting a "franchise" of American Psycho movies.
•
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 29, 2000 -- The only thing scarier than a serial-killer movie is a serial-killer movie with an NC-17 rating. Scary to distributors, anyhow.
"American Psycho" So Lions Gate Entertainment and director Mary Harron have snipped part of a supposedly explicit sex scene from "American Psycho," the forthcoming big-screen version of Bret Easton Ellis' novel about decadence, murder and rich young New York types. The editing did the trick: The Motion Picture Association of America will withdraw the taboo NC-17 rating it had slapped on the picture in January, and give it an R instead.
A spokesman for the distributor told Reuters that just "a few seconds" were snipped from a sexual tryst between the titular psycho-killer, played by Christian Bale, and two prostitutes. There was no word on what was entailed in the excised naughty portions.
An NC-17 ra

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2000 -- Has the fate of "American Psycho" been sealed even before its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival?
The big-screen adaptation of the controversial, ultra-violent Bret Easton Ellis novel has been slapped with an ungainly NC-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association of America.
The film, the sophomore endeavor from Mary Harron ("I Shot Andy Warhol"), depicts the psychopathic behaviors of a Wall Street wunderkind (played by Christian Bale) who kills women in his off hours. It is scheduled to debut nationwide in theaters April 7.
Yet despite the flick's subject matter, its NC-17 apparently wasn't awarded for bloodshed, but for what the MPAA calls "explicit sexuality." While the organization today declined comment, trade-paper reports says the ratings board frowned on a scene in which Bale's character eng

PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 22, 2000 -- Larry (not his real name) wanted $30 for a $10 ticket to "American Psycho." If you waited 15 minutes, you waited too long, because then Larry wanted $40 -- and got it, too. (Or so he thought.)
According to one overheard comment Friday night at the "Psycho"'s sold-out Sundance premiere at the Eccles Theatre, the 15-year-old and his underage posse were possibly the first scalpers in the history of Robert Redford's mountain paradise.
Such is life in this now (really) big little city.
The snow arrived about the same time the stars did this weekend -- as did the buzz, the crowds, Tammy Faye and the kids trying to price gouge morally offended indie film types. A rundown of the action:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 7, 2000 -- You would think that after last summer's insane brouhaha that was "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace", the masses would breathe a sigh of relief.
But the commotion is brewing for the second prequel (yet to be titled), which won't be released until summer 2002. Although it isn't inspiring 'round-the-block lines just yet, it is scheduled to begin filming at Fox Studios Australia this June, so this brings us to the most talked-about casting decision of the year: Who will play the grown-up Anakin Skywalker?
We'll know soon enough. Casting for "Episode II" is going on right this second, according to Jeanne Cole, spokeswoman for Lucasfilm. Casting director Robin Gurland has been seeing "hundreds of actors" for the past month, but no decision has been made yet.
A casting memo that circulated around the Internet -- and was co

Specifically, the project is about the titular PR man getting wrapped up in a mystery involving New York politics and celebrity.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 18, 2000 -- Call him Matthew McConaughey, dragon slayer. Daily Variety reports that the "U-571" hunk will star opposite Christian Bale ("American Psycho") in "Reign of Fire." Set in a post-apocalyptic England where fire-breathing dragons reign supreme, the story follows a dragon slayer (Matthew) and a "fire chief" (Bale) as they try to destroy the beasts.
The big-budget flick will go into production early next year in England.
SHE'S THE ONE: Keanu Reeves' Neo isn't the only one getting all the play in the next two "Matrix" sequels. The Hollywood Reporter says that Jada Pinkett Smith might join the original cast of the two sequels for the Wachowski brothers sci-fi flick. HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 25, 2000 -- Julia Roberts is no stranger to Joe Roth’s Revolution Studios. Already pegged to star in Revolution's "Project 3" and "American Sweethearts," Roberts might apparently also star in the studio’s upcoming "Perfect Strangers," Daily Variety reports.
The script will be written by Jon Bokenkamp, whose credits include "Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows."
'FIRE' IT UP: "American Psycho" star Christian Bale is in talks to star in "Reign of Fire," an apocalyptic tale about an England overrun by fire-breathing dragons, The Hollywood Reporter says. Bale will play the leader of the surviving earthlings.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 4, 2000 -- Looks like the rumored Anakin Skywalker shortlist just got a little shorter.
Daily Variety columnist Michael Fleming reports today that someone -- make that, some actor -- is close to being named the next Anakin Skywalker (aka the future Darth Vader) by "Star Wars" guru George Lucas.
And that someone, according to the Fleming report, is none other than one Hayden Christensen.
Who the heck, you ask, is Hayden Christensen?
The fact that no one can recall what the 19-year-old Canadian-born actor looks like notwithstanding, Christensen has been, so to speak, grinding it out in Hollywood since the mid 1990s, consigned to doing less-than-memorable TV series.
His resume includes parts in 1995's "Love and Betrayal: The Mia Farrow Story" (yippee!), 1996's tube adaptation of romance-maven Danielle Steel's "No Greater Love

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 20, 2000 -- William Shatner is working again. The old-school "Star Trek" dinosaur has joined the cast of "Miss Congeniality" as an embittered beauty pageant host. The film stars Sandra Bullock as a stalwart FBI agent who goes undercover as a Miss New Jersey pageant contestant in order to thwart a planned terrorist attack.
Shatner's last film role was in the 1998 sci-fi send-up "Free Enterprise," wherein he poked fun at himself and his larger-than-life "Trek" character. More recently, he's been paying the rent with those name-your-price-for-plane-tickets commercials.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 19, 2000 -- What's another week without a "Star Wars: Episode 2" casting rumor? The latest addition to the short-list of hopefuls for the role of Anakin Skywalker is current hot stuff Christian Bale who, in case you haven't been paying attention, plays the psychotic yuppie in the controversial flick "American Psycho."
MSNBC.com's gossip maven Jeanette Walls dropped the Bale scoop in her gossip column today, saying Bale is currently negotiating with George Lucas' Lucasfilm Ltd. to play the much-coveted role of the pre-dark side Darth Vader. And, during a recent publicity tour for "Psycho," the evasive actor answered questions about the Anakin rumors by saying, "You wouldn't have heard that from me. My lips are sealed. End of subject," according to Walls.
Other rumored Anakin candidates over the past few months have included "Dawson's Creek's" J

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 12, 2000 -- Just to make it plain: Huey Lewis thinks it's hip to be a square -- not a chainsaw-wielding, knife-throwing, raving lunatic. The 1980s pop relic, he of the band Huey Lewis and the News, was upset that producers of "American Psycho" failed to see the distinction. And so Lewis, reportedly upset by the violence depicted in the Christian Bale-toplined movie, demanded that the powers-that-be behind the blood-soaked R-rated movie remove his ditty "Hip to Be Square" from the soundtrack of said blood-soaked R-rated movie.
And it looks like Huey Lewis won. According to the music-news site allstar.com, Koch Records issued a recall of the soundtrack last week, in order to issue a new "Hip to Be Square"-less version. It's not believed any of the Lewis-offending versions made it to sales racks.
For those who still really want to hear blithe, so

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2000 -- Seen any good Satanic-possession movies lately?
The granddaddy of all devil-in-me flicks, "The Exorcist," is set to return to a handful of U.S. theaters next month in an all-new expanded and restored version that contains "more than one full reel of long-rumored, legendary footage, excised before the film's original release," according to Warner Bros.
The new version isn't being billed as a "director's cut," but rather as an "author's cut." Director William Friedkin, who supervised the restoration, says this is the version that author William Peter Blatty (who wrote the screenplay, based on his novel) wanted to see back in 1973. Twenty-six years ago, Friedkin and the studio had other ideas. Now Friedkin's a convert.
"After viewing it a quarter of a century later I've come to agree with him," Friedkin says in a

Annette Bening SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 26, 2000 -- Ding, ding, ding went Annette? Annette Bening might follow up her self-absorbed "American Beauty" housewife by playing an even more self-absorbed, complex and pathos-ridden woman.
Word comes today, via Variety's Army Archerd, that Bening is the No. 1 candidate to play Judy Garland in "Rainbow's End," a biopic in development at Fox Searchlight.
The movie, to be based on a new book by another Variety scribe, will be no "Wizard of Oz." It's about Garland's over-the-hill days in the early 1960s, when she hosted "The Judy Garland Show," a weekly primetime series. The movie will be executive produced by (get this) Oliver Stone and Garland's ex, Sid Luft.
One question, though: Who's gonna play Liza?
DON'T DO IT! How do you follow up an Oscar for Best Actor? You make an Inspector Clouseau movie, dummy.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 3, 2000 -- The "American Psycho" saga has taken another twist. After the movie ratings board made a final 11-4 ruling Wednesday upholding the film's NC-17 rating, Lions Gate Releasing announced that director Mary Harron will re-edit the film to achieve an R.
The film, which opens in April, stars Christian Bale as a young executive with a psychopathic taste for murder; it was given its rating for a scene depicting group sex among Bale and two prostitutes. But not to worry; we're sure the original cut will make its way onto DVD someday.
UN-MODEL BEHAVIOR: Supermodel Naomi Campbell apparently has worries deeper than which world runways to strut, as we reported Wednesday. The British diva pleaded guilty in a Canadian court to assaulting her former assistant and was given an absolute discharge, meaning she will not have a criminal record in Canada. <
