Universal's "Meet the Parents" continued to meet box office success, becoming the year's third film to place first for three consecutive weeks.
The PG-13-rated comedy was still laughing all the way to the bank in its third weekend with an estimated $16.32 million (-23%) at 2,619 theaters (+4 theaters; $6,230 per theater). Its cume is approximately $81.0 million, heading for a domestic theatrical gross of $130 million or more.
"Parents'" international release is through DreamWorks Pictures, which co-financed the film and will share equally in its success.

Spoof metal band, Spinal Tap, and its main players Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, will take the stage at Montreal's 19th Just for Laughs Festival. Joining them as headliners will be Will & Grace's Megan Mullally, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart and Jeff Foxworthy, organizers of the event said Tuesday. Other performers slated to appear are Darrell Hammond (Saturday Night Live), Joy Behar (The View), Marla Sokoloff (The Practice) and Scott Thompson (The Kids in the Hall). The festival, running July 12 through July 22, will showcase 49 stand-up shows, as well as theater, film and dance.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 15, 2000 -- Who knew a visit to future in-laws could be so funny ... and profitable. “Meet the Parents,” the comedy starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, held off “Remember the Titans” and four new movies to stay atop the box office heap, taking in an estimated $21.35 million in its second week, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations. The two-week total for “Parents” is $59 million.
“Titans” held on to the No. 2 spot with $13.58 million, taking its three-week total to $64.7 million. The high school football film starring Denzel Washington received the highest rating, an A+, by a CineScore poll for any film released this year.

Universal's PG-13-rated comedy "Meet the Parents" met with greater success than insiders had anticipated. Rather than the $18-22 million range that many Hollywood handicappers were expecting, "Parents" opened to a sizzling ESTIMATED $29.11 million at 2,614 theaters ($11,135 per theater).

Buena Vista/Disney's PG-rated football drama "Remember the Titans," from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, kicked off in first place with a muscular ESTIMATED $21.2 million at 1,865 theaters ($11,383 per theater).

"Titans" marks the first $20 million-plus since the arrival of Columbia's "Hollow Man" last Aug. 4. It ranks as Denzel Washington's biggest opening, out-performing the $18.6 million that "Crimson Tide" kicked off with in May 1995.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 10, 2000 -- Moviegoers' eyes were on "The Watcher" as Hollywood's fall season got off to an unexciting start.
Box office levels across the board were considerably less than insiders had anticipated going into the weekend. With many studio executives out of town attending the Toronto Film Festival, few insights were offered as to what went wrong. Overall, key films were estimated to have grossed about 22 percent less than this time last year.
With televised coverage of the Olympics expected to provide stiff competition from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1, Hollywood is holding back on opening high-profile films in September. That will almost certainly be reflected in ticket sales for the month.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 11, 2001 -- You won't be hearing the name Steven Soderbergh at this year's Independent Spirit Awards.
Instead, try Miguel Arteta, Darren Aronofsky and Kenneth Lonergan -- whose "Chuck & Buck," "Requiem for a Dream," and "You Can Count On Me," respectively, have nabbed a field-best five nominations each at the 16th Annual Independent Spirit Awards.
"Chuck & Buck" -- the second full-length feature from Arteta -- was nominated for best feature under $500,000, screenplay, director, supporting female (Lupe Ontiveros) and debut performance (Mike White).
Among "Requiem's" nominations are best director (Darren Aronofsky) and best feature. The drug-addiction flick will go up against "Before Night Falls," "George Washington," "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" in the best film column.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 14, 2000 -- You loved his cameo-filled opening sequence, the side gags, his effervescent personality and, most of all, the way he made the usually tedious Oscar telecast fun and fast.
So who isn't going to miss Billy Crystal just a little bit at this year's Academy Awards?
"I like Billy Crystal. I know [he won't be hosting], but I'd like to talk to him about that because he is my favorite. I think he is the best," Jennifer Love Hewitt told Hollywood.com at the Fire and Ice Ball for cancer research on Tuesday night.
Crystal said earlier this month that he absolutely, definitely and positively would not return to emcee the Academy Awards this year due to scheduling conflicts.
And if that's not enough, previous host Whoopi Goldberg has given her "no, thank you" to the hosting job.
