SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 14, 2000 -- So, today's Valentine's Day, and there are many reasons to be bitter. (Being single one great reason to be bitter).

So, it didn't help that Blockbuster, that rental behemoth, last week released its Top 10 list of the most romantic films of all-time. Of all-time? Oh, really.

Consider:

10. "The Wedding Singer" (1998) 9. "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997) 8. "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968) 7. "Jerry Maguire" (1996) 6. "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993) 5. "Chasing Amy" (1997) 4. "Sixteen Candles" (1984) 3. "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) 2. "Pretty Woman" (1990) 1. "As Good As It Gets" (1997)

So, OK, claws are out, and it's now open season.

How the heck does any movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore (Isn't her Gosh-I'm-So-Earnest-Act Old Yet? "Never Been Kissed" should've never been watched.) qualif

After a record-setting Thanksgiving feast, Hollywood got only box office crumbs this weekend as ticket sales plunged 50% from their holiday levels.

Universal and Imagine Entertainment's PG-rated blockbuster comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" continued to top the chart in its third weekend with a still festive estimated $27.11 million (-48%) at 3,138 theaters (+4 theaters; $8,640 per theater). Its cume is approximately $172.0 million, heading for $250 million.

(NOTE: All percentage comparisons today are calculated against the three-day weekend portion of the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period.)

"Grinch" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend.

"'Grinch is great!" Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said Sunday morning. "It's satisfying all audiences. In its third weekend 'Gri

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2000 -- A year ago, five unknown guys from Orlando, Fla., went to the Sundance Film Festival with a cheap movie, a neato gimmick and a good publicist.

Today they return to Park City, Utah, as Hollywood players -- the creators of what might become the biggest horror film franchise ever -- and as bona fide filmmakers afforded multimillion-dollar budgets.

Their film cost $10,000 to $100,000, depending on what you read. They sold it for $1 million. It made $140 million in theaters. Maybe you've heard of it: "The Blair Witch Project."

Hands down, the "Haxan Five," as they like to call themselves (Get it? It rhymes with "Jackson Five") are the biggest rags-to-riches story ever to come out of Sundance. Sure, other nickel-and-dime neophytes such as Kevin Smith and Edward Burns have received more critical praise. But none of those guys laun

HOLLYWOOD, May 30, 2000 -- First, the big budget. Then, the rumors of the even bigger budget. And so it goes for Hollywood's high-priced highly scrutinized. The latest to be subjected to whispers of lavish spending: "Pearl Harbor."

Today's New York Post reports that the WWII-themed Disney megaproject, already budgeted at a record $135 million, is "still upwards" of that amount and "could go higher." The budgetary estimates are credited to an unnamed "on-the-set mole."

Disney dismisses the Page Six item, essentially accusing the "on-the-set mole" of having no idea how the film's costs are being added up. (Meow.)

"Pearl Harbor," now shooting in Hawaii, features an ensemble cast led by Ben Affleck and Cuba Gooding Jr. and promises to sport an impressive array of bombs and other exploding things as choreographed by director/blower-upper master Michael ("Armageddon")

"Charlie's Angels" won this weekend's box office election by a mile despite projections that "Little Nicky" might give it a devil of a time.

"Angels," Columbia's PG-13 action adventure comedy, continued kicking box office butt in its second weekend with a still sexy estimated $25.0 million (-38%) at 3,037 theaters (theater count unchanged; $8,232 per theater). Its cume is approximately $75.4 million, heading for $150 million or more.

"Angels" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in 500 or more theaters last weekend.

"Great news for us," Sony Pictures Entertainment worldwide marketing & distribution president Jeff Blake said Sunday morning. "It's just a terrific hold considering the record opening we had the week before."

Asked where "Angels" is going, Blake replied, "We should be able to hit $100 million by Thanksgiving and still have t

Gus Van Sant, the eclectic director of such films as To Die For and Finding Forrester, will reteam with his Good Will Hunting stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck (yes, Ben's little brother) for a new film, Jerry. According to the buzz at Cannes, the film is being kept closely under wraps, so there's not much known on the subject matter. Could be about a mouse or a TV evangelist or maybe a raunchy TV talk show host. What is known is that the project is being put together by the William Morris Agency Independent department, with co-heads Cassian Elwes and Rena Ronson negotiating the deal.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 16, 2000-- "The Grinch" should steal first place from "Charlie's Angels" this weekend.

"'Grinch' is going to be number one," an insider predicts without having to think twice. "You can count on $30 million-plus, and it could even be much higher. The question is will the market expand? I believe that it can."

The PG-rated comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" from Universal and Imagine Entertainment, opening at 3,127 theaters and on over 4,200 screens, is expected to turn box offices everywhere green.

Directed by Ron Howard and produced by Brian Grazer, "Grinch" stars Jim Carrey.

Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies' G-rated animated sequel "Rugrats in Paris: The Movie" should be a lively number two, opening at 2,934 theaters.

This weekend's box office election is too close to call, according to insiders who see a close race between "Charlie's Angels" and "Little Nicky" for the popular vote.

Columbia's PG-13-rated action adventure comedy kicked off to a record setting $40.1 million last weekend. New Line's PG-13-rated youth appeal comedy "Little Nicky," opening at about 2,910 theaters, is flying high on the Hollywood radar screen.

"It probably will fall less than 50%," an insider predicts about "Angels." "Figure 40%. So you're looking at $24 million. It could be a tight race with 'Little Nicky.' I'd have to say $22-24 million for both of them."

"I think you've got to figure it's 'Charlie's Angels' again unless 'Little Nicky' just really surges here at the last minute, which it could with young males," another studio executive cautions.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 4, 2001 -- Director Robert Altman will be bringing his signature brand of filmmaking to Britain, and the country's top-notch actors are apparently the first to rejoice.

Jude Law ("The Talented Mr. Ripley"), Emily Watson ("Breaking the Waves") and Kristin Scott Thomas ("The English Patient") are among the ensemble cast that have signed on to Altman's "Gosford Park," Daily Variety reports.

And Helen Mirren ("The Passion of Ayn Rand") and Michael Gambon ("Sleepy Hollow") might also join a cast that could amount to 20 people.

"Lots of actors want to be in the film, but it is a question of fitting it into their schedules," Altman's spokesman said.

In typical Altman-esque narrative style, the film is said to be about the relations among different social classes in 1930s Britain.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 4, 2000 -- Catherine Zeta-Jones knows how important trust is.

The new Mrs. Michael Douglas will star in the thriller "Trust," a project that is said by Daily Variety to be in the vein of 1987's "Fatal Attraction."

Originally a British miniseries, "Trust" will follow a lawyer living in New York who discovers that her psychiatrist hubby is having an affair with one of his patients.

KING OF THE 'CASTLE': "The Legend of Bagger Vance" helmer and actor Robert Redford might return to the front of the camera in "The Castle," a drama directed by "The Contender's" Rod Lurie, Variety says.

The project, which centers on an imprisoned five-star general as he rallies other prisoners into a mutiny, is also in discussions with Mark Wahlberg for a co-starring role.

The "Whatever It Takes" actor is in final talks to join Tobey Maguire in the much-hyped "Spider-Man" feature, Columbia Pictures says today.

In the Sam Raimi big-screen adaptation, Franco would play Harry Osborn, the high school pal and college roommate of Peter Parker, aka Spidey.

Franco is currently shooting the thriller "City By the Sea" with Robert De Niro and has just wrapped the TNT tube-pic "James Dean," wherein he plays the titular rebel.

GOING MOO: The Hollywood Reporter says that Cuba Gooding Jr. and Judi Dench will lend their voices to the Disney animated feature "Sweating Bullets" about a group of cows fighting to save their farm. Sarah Jessica Parker and Ja'Net DuBois have already signed on to do their cow duties, with actor Randy Quaid possibly joining them.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 12, 2000 -- Girls ruled again as "Charlie’s Angels" held on to the top spot at the weekend box office for a second consecutive week, defeating the likes of Adam Sandler, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Val Kilmer.

"Charlie’s Angels," starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu and directed by Joseph McGinty Nichol (aka McG), took in an estimated $25 million, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations.

Adam Sandler’s devil of a new comedy "Little Nicky" bowed at No. 2 with $18.6 million, and the U.S. Navy drama "Men of Honor" starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro grabbed the No. 3 spot with an estimated $14 million.

Showing little sign of weakening, "Meet the Parents" took in another $10.59 million over the weekend, bringing its grand total to $130.3 million.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 12, 2000 -- Social activist and director Spike Lee's latest target of wrath has centered on superstar Will Smith and his new film's depiction of racial stereotypes.

At a Harvard University discussion panel on race held last week, Lee voiced his displeasure over Smith's decision to play a mystical and spiritual golf caddy in Robert Redford’s "The Legend of Bagger Vance."

In an interview with the New York Post, Lee criticized Smith's role as Matt Damon's subordinate in the film he described as "Driving Mr. Damon" for painting such a pretty picture of racial relations in the Depression-era South.

In an interview with the Boston Globe, Lee was quoted as saying: "With all that going on, why are you [expletive] trying to teach Matt Damon a golf swing?"

Lee has in the past criticized Quentin Tarantino for his repeated reliance on racial slurs in "

WOOD, Nov. 10, 2000 -- The battle between heaven and hell will be played out in cineplexes across the nation this weekend.

And by that, we mean the box office war between last week's reigning champ, "Charlie's Angels", and this week's hot contender, Adam Sandler's "Little Nicky".

Despite a mega $40 mil plus opening achieved by "Charlie's Angels" last weekend, Sandler's inexplicable star power -- and the fact that "Little Nicky" is the comic's first big outing since last year's "Big Daddy" -- could very well topple the detective chick flick from the top.

Certainly much less threatening than Sandler, the Navy diver drama Men of Honor and the Mars thriller "Red Planet" will also come out for a piece of the box office pie this weekend.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31, 2000 -- Tom Ripley is about to strike again, albeit under a completely different guise. How so? Think John Malkovich and "M:1-2's" Dougray Scott instead of Matt Damon, for instance.

Daily Variety reports that Malkovich and Scott are in talks to star in "Ripley's Game," a sort of a follow-up to last year's "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (with Damon as the titled character).

The new project, which is based on the third novel in author Patricia Highsmith's Ripley series, follows an older, married Ripley who is looking for an assassin to rid two rivals.

Shooting of the film is set to begin in Venice in January.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 23, 2000 -- Beatles child Stella McCartney may have been named Designer of the Year at this year's VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, but it was her father who stole the show. Paul McCartney surprised his daughter at the fashion awards on Friday night, presenting her with the designer award for her work at Chloe. The former Beatles singer received a standing ovation from the audience.

Also bringing the high-fashion audience to its feet at the Theater at Madison Square Garden was Godfather of Soul James Brown, who joined singer Lenny Kravitz on stage to perform "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag."
