HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 19, 2000 -- After months of media build-up and a baby boy, Hollywood supercouple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones tied the knot Saturday at the Plaza Hotel in New York.
Fellow actors Goldie Hawn, Danny DeVito and James Woods and director Oliver Stone were among the 250 friends and family on hand for the nuptials, which reportedly cost $2 million.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones met at a film festival in France in August 1998, began dating in spring 1999 and became engaged last New Year's Eve.
Zeta-Jones gave birth to their son, Dylan Michael, in August. Photographs of their son were sold exclusively to Brit celeb mag OK! for a reported $1 million; the mag also has exclusive rights to the wedding pictures.
Douglas, 56, is the son of Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas and won an Oscar for 1987's "Wall Street," directed by Stone. His current film, "

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 27, 2000 -- Acting ability aside, you have to admire Madonna's tenacity when it comes to putting herself time and again in front of the lens, raw and intrepid -- as if she's never heard of seriously bad flicks such as "Body of Evidence," "Who's That Girl" and "Shanghai Express." The list goes on and on.
"Next Best Thing" So this Friday finds the M One going at it all over again with "The Next Best Thing" (opening nationwide). In her continual quest to prove that she's a legit screen actress, Madonna tackles the role of a straight woman who forms an alternative household with her gay pal (played by her real-life gay pal Rupert Everett) and their son, whom they conceived on a night of drunken stupor.
The idea of a gay man living with a straight woman living with their kid may have been intriguing (or even provocative) a couple years back. But

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 22, 2000 -- So you’re a Hollywood star visiting Washington, D.C., and you need a place to kick it for the night.
What do you do?
One option: Call up Bill and Hilary over at the White House.
The executive office has released a list of 404 overnight guests who have, at one time or another during a 13-month span, slept over at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Seeing as how the Clintons enjoy hob-nobbing with friends in the entertainment industry, the list includes a sizeable Hollywood contingent, including heavyweights such as Steven Spielberg, Meg Ryan and her ex Dennis Quiad, Danny DeVito and wife Rhea Pearlman, Ted Danson, Quincy Jones, Walter Cronkite, and Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
But here's what we wanna know: How the heck did Chevy Chase and Jimmy Buffet get invited?
The White House’s sleepover roster was releas

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 5, 2000 -- Despite all the hype, Madonna came in second best at the weekend box office.
Studio tracking studies predicting a first-place opening for Paramount's "The Next Best Thing," the romantic comedy/drama teaming the Material Girl with Rupert Everett, were wrong. Instead, top honors went for the third consecutive weekend to Warner Bros.' "The Whole Nine Yards."
Bruce Willis "Yards," the R-rated hit comedy from Warners, Morgan Creek and Franchise Pictures, held strongly in its third weekend with an estimated $7.31 million (-24%) at 2,793 theaters (-117 theaters, $2,617 per theater). Its total is approximately $38.5 million.
Directed by Jonathan Lynn, "Yards" stars Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry.
"Unbelievable," Warner Bros. distribution executive Jeff Goldstein said Sunday morning, delighted with how well "Yards" was ho

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 5, 2000 -- Jeff Bridges is on board to headline the low-budget independent feature "Scenes of the Crime" for first-time director Dominique Forma, The Hollywood Reporter says. The project, budgeted at less than $10 million and scheduled to begin shooting Nov. 4 in Los Angeles for five weeks, centers on a young man (John Abrams of "Scary Movie") who makes money as a driver for a local mobster. When the mobster is killed by a rival Mob boss (Bridges), the driver finds himself caught in the middle.
A BIG KISS OFF: Danny DeVito is set to direct the Warner Bros. comedy "Death to Smoochy" about the cutthroat world of children’s programming, the Reporter says. The project, written by Adam Resnick ("Lucky Numbers") and to be produced by Andrew Lazar, centers on a man who plays Smoochy, a large, blue Barney-type character who is targeted for death.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 7, 2000 -- It's time for some old school fun.
Seasoned comedian Eddie Murphy and seasoned tough guy turned sometime funny guy Robert De Niro might star in "Showtime," Daily Variety says.
The project is about a no-nonsense cop who is forced to partner up with a rookie as the star of a new reality-based TV show in the vein of "Cop."
DOING GOOD 'DEEDS': Variety also says that Adam Sandler and "Little Nicky" director Steve Brill will team up again in the pic "Deeds," an homage to the 1936 Frank Capra classic "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town."
KISS ME, STUPID: Here's another comedy item: Jon Stewart will join Edward Norton, Robin Williams and Catherine Keener in the comedy "Death to Smoochie."
Directed by Danny DeVito, the film follows a Barney-like kid-show host who gets canned. Stewart will play the network exec that gives the show the ax.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31, 2000 -- Tom Ripley is about to strike again, albeit under a completely different guise. How so? Think John Malkovich and "M:1-2's" Dougray Scott instead of Matt Damon, for instance.
Daily Variety reports that Malkovich and Scott are in talks to star in "Ripley's Game," a sort of a follow-up to last year's "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (with Damon as the titled character).
The new project, which is based on the third novel in author Patricia Highsmith's Ripley series, follows an older, married Ripley who is looking for an assassin to rid two rivals.
Shooting of the film is set to begin in Venice in January.
DOWN WITH 'SMOOCHY': The Hollywood Reporter says that Edward Norton and Catherine Keener ("Being John Malkovich") will join the cast of "Death to Smoochy." Directed by Danny DeVito, the film follows Smoochy (Norton), a children's TV show

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 5, 2000 -- What does Russell Crowe have in common with Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey and Harrison Ford?
Answer: The "Gladiator" roughtrade might soon be making the same type of cash as those A-list leading men.
British Web site Popcorn reports that Crowe has been offered a cool $20 mil for the lead in a new World War II project titled "Giant." If Crowe accepts the role, the salary offer will be his career high.
Directed by John Frankenheimer ("Reindeer Games") and penned by Dan Gordon ("The Hurricane"), the film's slated for a January start date.
ROBIN PLAYS 'DEATH': Daily Variety reports that Robin Williams is close to taking the lead in "Death to Smoochie." He'll be playing a costumed children TV star (a la Barney) who seeks vengeance after being replaced by another character. The comedy will costar Danny DeVito, who'll also serve as director. <

Dinosaurs snapped back to life this weekend as Buena Vista/Disney's "Dinosaur" kicked off to nearly $39 million.
The PG-rated, computer-animated feature, which cut short the chart-topping reign of DreamWorks' "Gladiator," set a record as the year's biggest opening with an ESTIMATED $38.6 million at 3,257 theaters ($11,860 per theater).
"Dinosaur's" per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide or limited release this weekend.
"I think it's great," Buena Vista Distribution president Chuck Viane said Sunday morning.
Noting that some studios had estimated the picture as opening to even bigger numbers, Viane said, "I know some of my competitors have given me more credit than we're giving ourselves, but I'd rather see it than say it and then have to back off. If tomorrow (when actual weekend figures are released) it's a bigger num

A "Dino"-mite opening by Disney's "Dinosaur" should cut DreamWorks' "Gladiator" down to size this weekend.
After its two-week box office reign, "Gladiator" should fall prey to Buena Vista/Disney's opening of its PG-rated computer-animated "Dinosaur" at 3,257 theaters.
"Dinosaur's" 21% first-choice tracking doesn't really tell the whole story, according to insiders. "It's just fine, because kids' movies don't track," says one executive.
Estimates by Hollywood handicappers of just how big "Dinosaur" will open range from a cautious $25-35 million to a really exuberant $35-40 million. Making projections even more challenging is the fact that a great many "Dinosaur" tickets will be sold at reduced prices to children.
"'Lion King' did $40.9 million in its opening weekend," explains one source. "Now, it opened the end of June. Kids were out of school

"Gladiator" continued to rule the box office this weekend, collecting another $24 million in tribute from moviegoers.
The R-rated action adventure from DreamWorks easily held on to first place in its second week with a hefty ESTIMATED $24.3 million (-30%) at 2,943 theaters (+40 theaters; $8,257 per theater). Its cume is approximately $73.3 million, heading for about $150 million in domestic theaters.
"Gladiator's" per theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release this weekend.
"Obviously, it's a strong hold," DreamWorks distribution head Jim Tharp said Sunday morning. "The positive word-of-mouth continues to be very strong."
Although DreamWorks is distributing "Gladiator" domestically, Universal is releasing it internationally. The two studios are 50-50 partners, sharing equally in its success. The film reportedly cost $1

DreamWorks' "Gladiator" should be victorious again on the box office battlefield this weekend.
With "Gladiator" still commanding a 30% first-choice tracking score among opening and released movies, there's little doubt the R-rated action adventure will keep a tight grip on the top spot.
If "Gladiator" slips 36% from its $34.8 million opening, its second weekend tribute will still be a handsome sum of about $22 million.
DreamWorks is distributing "Gladiator" domestically, while Universal is releasing it internationally. The two studios co-financed the film, which reportedly cost $103 million to make, and are 50-50 partners, sharing equally in its success.
Directed by Ridley Scott, it stars Russell Crowe.
Warner Bros. and Franchise Pictures' PG-13 rated sci-fi action adventure "Battlefield Earth," opening at 3,307 theaters, should w

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 7, 2000 -- David Letterman or no, CBS is determined to milk those "Late Show" reruns and famous guest host offers for all they're worth.
The network has announced that another week of Letterman reruns is in store for the "Late Night" time slot -- albeit with some special star-power favor. Starting tonight until Friday, famous people -- in the caliber of Jerry Seinfeld, Danny DeVito, Bruce Willis, Bill Cosby, and others -- will recount personal "Late Show" memories and Letterman-related special moments that would serve as openers to each show until the end of the week.
"Late Show" fans need not worry about the whereabouts of their favorite talk show host. The weirdly eulogistic nature of these "backstage" conversations has nothing to do with the availability of the convalescing Letterman. Dave's slated to come back to the late-night talk show as

HOLLYWOOD, June 9, 2000 - What would you do if you saw Terence Stamp bellying up to the bar? Could you resist the urge to approach him and scream, "You will bow down before me, Jor-El! Both you, and then one day, your heirs!" ? The 26th annual Saturn Awards were held Tuesday in Century City, Calif., and, what with all the sci-fi and fantasy movie gods and goddesses in attendance, we had trouble keeping the cap on all the riffs we were tempted to uncork. There was Martin ("Ed Wood") Landau ("Nowadays, no one gives two f***s for Bela."), Robert ("Nightmare on Elm Street") Englund ("I'm your boyfriend now!"), director Bryan ("The Usual Suspects") Singer ("Who is Keyser Soze?"), and so on.
Luckily we refrained from making fools of ourselves, but the same could not be said for the several dozen fanboys (and fangirls) who crowded the Park Hyatt Hotel lobby, trying to sneak autographs
