SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 27, 2000 -- It's the last gasp for the February sweeps (running through Wednesday), and the mini-series "events" are coming fast and furious.

NBC leads the way this week with its ambitious test of our collective attention span, "The 10th Kingdom" (9-11 p.m. EST/PST, Sunday; 8-11 p.m. Monday; 8-11 p.m. Wednesday; 9-11 p.m. March 5; 8-11 p.m. March 6 ... See what we mean?). Executive producer Robert Halmi Sr., who has scored with some bold and nifty TV productions in the past ("Gulliver's Travels," "Merlin"), along with the occasional air ball ("Leprechauns"), seems to be taking a "bigger is better" approach this time around. As for "Sweet November," "Circle of Friends" filmmaker Pat O'Connor is set to direct the tale of a businessman (Reeves) who falls in love with a cancer-riddled woman (Theron).

Pacino will star in the New York stage-bound production for director-actress Estelle Parsons. The A-list ensembl

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 3, 2000 -- White House scandal, suburban weirdness, murder. ...

Nope, this isn't a rundown of the hourly news. It's some of the more juicy, ratings-grabbing tidbits the networks have masterminded for the famed (or infamous) February sweeps.

For the next 28 days -- from today until March 1 -- our TV nation will be bombarded with special programs concocted to induce ratings, the better to spike ad rates for the upcoming season.

From cameo appearances to splashy adventures to tabloid melodrama, the networks have pulled out all their stops to keep viewers complacently glued to the tube. Needless to say, the revolution will not be televised during the sweeps period.

Here are some of the sweeps hopefuls that caught our eyes:

TV MOVIES/MINISERIES:

"Sally Hemings: An American Scandal" (Feb. 13 and 16, CBS) -- The four-hou
