SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 5, 2000 -- American audiences agree: Nothing is more potent than the combo of greed and fame.
ABC's sign-of-the-time gameshow "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" clobbered its May sweeps competition with its just-concluded celebrity installments that ran nightly from Monday to Thursday. Wednesday's edition, in fact, gave the network its biggest audience for a nonsports show since 1983.
With the impressive results, word is that ABC's already planning to bring back the stars for another sweeps run in November.
"The ratings was great, the celebrities had a lot of fun, and it was for charity," ABC spokeswoman Mozell Miley told Hollywood.com today. "The idea [of an encore celeb week] has been considered, but it hasn't been confirmed."
Here's a final rundown of how this week's celebrity contestants did (all winnings went to the players' cha

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17, 2000 -- Whether the Olympics or network television, it's a cutthroat world out there. This from ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" files: NBC and CBS are reportedly asking their network stars to not appear on special celebrity episodes of the Regis Philbin phenom, Daily Variety reports.
But viewers will be treated to 10 former U.S. Olympic athletes.
Last spring, funnyman Ray Romano from CBS' "Everybody Loves Raymond," "X-Files" G-man David Duchovny of Fox, and Vivica A. Fox from the CBS series "City of Angels" appeared on "Millionaire" alongside such notables as Lance Bass of 'N Sync and Queen Latifah to high ratings.
Variety reports that Martin Sheen of NBC's "The West Wing" and Conan O'Brien tentatively agreed to appear this time around but backed out after NBC officials suggested otherwise.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 28, 2000 -- Looks like the tube is about to get a little funnier.
Emmy-winning actor Hank Azaria and comedian Jim Belushi have each landed a new TV pilot deal, Daily Variety reports.
Azaria, who received rave reviews and an Emmy for his role in the TV movie "Tuesdays With Morrie," will star as a sketch comedy writer in a new comedy for NBC.
And the Belushi project, geared for ABC, will be a half-hour family comedy developed by "Drew Carey" scribes Tracy Newman and John Stark.
GEENA ENGAGED! Let's hope that the fourth time is the charm. The Associated Press reports that actress Geena Davis, who has forayed into tube territory with "The Geena Davis Show" on ABC, became engaged to her 29-year-old surgeon boyfriend over the Thanksgiving weekend. No date has been set.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 8, 2001 -- The critics have had their chance, now it's time for the people to give their two cents.
Pretty woman Julia Roberts, who carried last year's "Erin Brockovich" to the top of many a critics' lists, was chosen as favorite female movie actress by the People's Choice Awards on Sunday night.
And "The Patriot" and "What Women Want" star Mel Gibson proved to be what the whole nation wants as he was named favorite male movie star.
Funnyman Jim Carrey continues to charm audiences as the "Me, Myself and Irene" and "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" star was given the favorite star in a comedy.
Interesting, though, as the people seemed to have gotten a bit behind the times as they picked "The Green Mile" -- yes, that's the 1999 prison drama with Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan -- for both favorite film and favorite motion pictur

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 1, 2000 - This one just gets weirder and weirder. Now in its 27th year, the People's Choice Awards have announced their nominees and the results are even more worth a recount than that mess in Florida.
Culled by a nationwide Gallup poll of 213 million Americans, according to Reuters reports, the voters picked "The Patriot," "Remember the Titans" and "The Green Mile" as best film nominees. But the problem is, "The Green Mile," starring Tom Hanks, was released last year. Hmmm.
The award show, which honors those in film, music and TV, will pay tribute to favorites like Mel Gibson, Britney Spears and, um, Alabama.
On the TV front, Michael Richards ("The Michael Richards Show") and John Goodman ("Normal, Ohio") are each nominated in the favorite male performer in a new TV series category along with "Ed's" Tom Cavanagh -- despite the fact that these sho

HOLLYWOOD, May 14, 2000 -- Sometimes all these special events during sweeps months just get in the way. They drive a wedge between you, the viewer, and your favorite shows. But, then again, if it wasn't for the May sweeps, there'd be no season finale cliffhangers. And if there were no season finale cliffhangers … Well, we'd rather not even think about a world that bleak. Instead, let's get ready for some quality time with our favorite shows before the summer reruns start… It's season finale week! But first, some special events:
-- After months of soul-searching and hard prayer seeking a solution to ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," CBS may have just found the answer in "Jesus" (9 p.m. EDT/PDT, Sunday and Wednesday). Produced by Lorenzo Minoli, who has brought a slew of Old Testament-themed movies to TNT, "Jesus" promises not only a lavish production, but also a more-modern

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 17, 2000 -- No more cheesy poofs? Say it ain’t so! Word comes today from the New York Post that the creators of “South Park,” that flatulence-obsessed, toilet-minded (and really funny) cartoon, are seriously thinking about calling it quits. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are reportedly being courted by both NBC and Michael Ovitz’s ATG agency to produce a network show -- and if that happens, you can say bye-bye to Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny and the gang.
Parker and Stone are under contract to make six more “South Park” episodes this year for Comedy Central. After that, they might well take flight and fry some bigger fish. The Post says the duo is being offered a budget in the $1 million-per-episode range for a network show, while Comedy Central affords them about $400,000 to $500,000 to make each “South Park.”
If only they’d won the Oscar for that

PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 10, 2000 -- If the Gallup pollsters of America had their way, "The Sixth Sense" and "Big Daddy" would sweep the Academy Awards. The two films dominated the film categories at the 26th Annual People's Choice Awards on Sunday night at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
"The Sixth Sense," which also stands a strong chance of Oscar nomination, won awards for Favorite Motion Picture and Favorite Dramatic Motion Picture; its star, its star, Bruce Willis, picked up the award for Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Drama.
"Big Daddy," which stands virtually no chance at an Oscar nomination (unless voters suddenly concoct a Best Achievement in Spitballs category), won for Favorite Comedy Motion Picture; Adam Sandler won Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Comedy.

BEVERLY HILLS -- By now, you'd figure that Jim Carrey would be used to being attacked. Attacked by harsh critics. Attacked by autograph-seeking fans. Attacked by ex-wife Lauren Holly (alimony, anyone?). Still, he looked stunned and confused when Las Vegas singer Tony Clifton, dressed in full lounge lizard regalia, attacked him Saturday.
Carrey was responding to questions during a press conference for his upcoming Universal biopic "Man on the Moon" (named for the hit REM song) about the life of comedian Andy Kaufman. Clifton spray painted "Tony on the Moon" on the walls of the elegant Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills after making his way through a crowd of confused reporters. He voiced his contempt for the actor/comedian who he referred to as Drew Carey. Drew Carey?
Clifton then confronted Jim Carrey and defiantly poured water over the head of the star who earns up to

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 5, 2000 -- Drew Carey is first out of the gate in this second full week of the May sweeps in the title role of "Geppetto" on ABC's "Wonderful World of Disney" (7 p.m. EDT/PDT, today). The classic family-friendly tale, best known from the 1940 animated classic "Pinocchio," gets a live-action makeover, being retold from the point of view of the puppet turned real boy's "single father." This musical production includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Seinfeld") as the Blue Fairy and original songs from Stephen Schwartz.
And if that hasn't hooked you yet, try passing this up: Drew Carey sings!
