HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 26, 2000 -- Dr. Seuss' "Grinch" was just what the doctor ordered for theater owners, lifting their spirits with nearly $74 million in Thanksgiving ticket sales.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment's PG-rated blockbuster comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" from director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer and star Jim Carrey easily held on to the top spot in its second weekend.
Going into the long Thanksgiving period, insiders' were seeing stiff competition on their radar screens for "Grinch" from Buena Vista's twin openings of "Unbreakable" (Touchstone) and "102 Dalmatians" (Disney). But it was clear as early as Thanksgiving morning when estimates of Wednesday's grosses became available that "Grinch" would top the holiday chart. Nonetheless, Buena Vista's two new arrivals together carved themselves a robust $74 million slice of box o

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 21, 2000 -- The 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards is shaping up to be one heck of a testosterone-charged run.
Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic" and Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" have emerged as the frontrunners in this year's race for the Globes, each receiving five nods apiece as nominations for the annual bash were announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in Beverly Hills, Calif..
Trailing closely behind are Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical rock flick "Almost Famous," "Chocolat," "Wonder Boys" and Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," each earning four nominations.
Soderbergh's drug trafficking drama (which has yet to bow in theaters) picked up almost all the prized loot with a nod for best picture (drama), best director, best screenplay for scribe Stephen Gaghan and a best supporting actor and actress (drama) mention for Benecio D

Moviegoers celebrated "Mummy's" Day this weekend with a record setting $70 million opening.
Universal's PG-13 rated adventure sequel "The Mummy Returns" kicked off Hollywood's pre-summer season with a staggering ESTIMATED $70.11 million at 3,104 theaters ($20,615 per theater). "Mummy" accounted for about 65% of the weekend's total key films gross of $107.5 million.
"Mummy" is well on its way to what looks like it could be a $200 million gross in domestic theaters. That would be about $45 million more than the first "Mummy" did domestically in 1999.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30, 2001 -- Nominations for the 7th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today in Los Angeles at L.A.'s Pacific Design Center.
The unique show, honoring performers from 13 movie and TV categories, will air on TNT, Sunday, March 11 from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

Several nominees in the television categories are returning to try their luck again, namely James Gandolfini and Edie Falco from “The Sopranos,” who both won in their respective categories last year. Also, die-hard dramas, such as “ER” and “Law & Order,” are back fo

Three films should enjoy heaping portions of box office pie over a five-day Thanksgiving period in which the marketplace expands to $240 million or more.
Which movie carves itself the biggest slice of holiday business remains to be seen, but insiders say the happy chart-topping trio will be Universal and Imagine Entertainment's "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas," last weekend's Number One film, and Buena Vista's two openings -- Disney's "102 Dalmatians" and Touchstone's "Unbreakable."
Also likely to be well fed at the holiday box office buffet are two holdovers -- Paramount and Nickelodeon's "Rugrats In Paris" and Columbia's "Charlie's Angels."
After kicking off to $55.1 million last weekend, the PG-rated comedy adventure "Grinch" should have $70 million as it goes into this weekend at 3,134 theaters (up 7 runs from last week). It should have

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 5, 2001 -- One thing's certain, there are as many critics out there as there are movies.
Following critics from New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Toronto, the Florida Film Critics Circle has unveiled their top film choices for the year... with pretty much the usual suspects.
Golden boy Steven Soderbergh continues his run as critics' darling, scoring a best director nod for both "Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic." That border-crossing drug flick also nabbed best picture and best supporting actor for hot stuff Benicio Del Toro.
The Florida folks named Geoffrey Rush best actor for his work as the Marquis de Sade in "Quills," and Ellen Burstyn got the best actress nod for her strung-out turn in "Requiem for a Dream."
Frances McDormand was the Florida critics' top pick for best supporting actress based on her roles in both "Wonder Boys" and "Almost

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 16, 2000 -- Kate Winslet has a new addition to her marriage with director Jim Threapleton. And her name is Mia.
The "Titanic" and "Holy Smoke" actress, 25, and her 26-year-old hubby welcomed their new baby girl into the world in London on Thursday.
The name was a last-minute selection.
"Kate and Jim had drawn up a list of 10 names but when the baby was born, none of them seemed right," Winslet's agent, Robert Garlock, told Reuters.
"Then Mia came to them, and it just seemed right. There is no family significance. They just thought it was a really beautiful name," Garlock added.
Winslet is taking a seven-month break to be with Mia.
The British actress next appears in the Marquis De Sade drama "Quills" with Geoffrey Rush and Joaquin Phoenix.
