HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 31, 2000 -- Madonna's "Music" is movin' on up. The Queen of Music’s latest single made a giant leap, 12 slots to be exact, to the No. 2 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart. The hip-hop flavored ditty shot up right behind Janet Jackson's "Doesn't Really Matter," which has been at the No. 1 spot for the past three weeks.
"Music" also made a jump on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart from No. 10 to the No. 1 spot, knocking off "Let's Get Married" by Jagged Edge. Others artists continued to creep up the charts this week, including Christina Aguilera's "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" (from No. 23 to No. 18) and Next's "Wifey" (from No. 8 to No. 7).

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 14, 2000 -- Maybe they should call Carlos Santana "King of the World." Just a few months after his veritable sweep of the Grammy Awards, Santana took three trophies, including the record of the year award for "Corazon Espinado," his duet with Mexican rock band Mana, at the newfangled Latin Grammys on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.
"It feels like the first kiss," Santana said after winning. "It feels very natural and divine and human." The guitar god extraordinaire dedicated his awards to Africa, the women of the world, bilingual education and Nelson Mandela.
It was a star-studded event, as they say. Heavyweights such as Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and 'N Sync were among those trolling down the red carpet, and Ricky Martin opened the ceremony by performing a tribute to the late Tito Puente. The show was hosted by Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 13, 2000 -- The first-ever Latin Grammy Awards will be broadcast tonight, building pride in Latin music, yet fueling its fair share of controversy. And singer Gloria Estefan and husband/producer Emilio Estefan are at the center of it all.
Latin music’s super couple formed the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences', or LARAS, and have been pushing for a Latin Grammys for a long time. Now that they’ve got it and they’re flaunting it, according to some naysayers who say they’re stealing the show.
Here are the facts:
Besides the high-profile presence of the Estefans’ record label at the event, Emilio is being honored as LARAS’ first Person of the Year … hmmm.
His wife is one the featured performers … hmmm.
Oh, and the couple’s proteges Carlos Vives, Shakira and Ruben Blades are all nominated for awards … hmmm, again.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 30, 1999 -- Let the Pokémon backlash begin.
First, there was the recall of Burger King toys over safety concerns. Then there was the Michigan man who was granted a refund by a Kmart after saying his cute, little Pikachu doll dropped the F-bomb when its circuits were punched rapidly. (To be fair, cussing when one's circuits are being rapidly punched does seem a natural response.) Anyway, the man's calling for yet another nationwide recall.
And if that weren't enough, Nintendo, the gamemaker responsible for the video craze that spawned a TV show and hit movie, is being threatened by a lawsuit from spoon-bending psychic Uri Geller.
Geller says his image (not to mention his name) is being ripped off by the evil Pokémon character called "Un-Geller" (or, as its known in Japan, "Evil-Geller"). Un-Geller, by the way, carries spoon and boasts psychi

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 4, 2000 -- They might not win Oscars, but several singer/actors/divas are up for Grammys.
Nominations for the 42nd Grammy Awards, honoring the would-be best in music, were announced in Los Angeles today -- and the list of hopefuls reads like a who's-who in movieland, with Jennifer Lopez ("Out of Sight"), Courtney Love ("Man in the Moon") and Cher ("Tea With Mussolini") among those making the cut.
Here's a look at some of the key Grammy races involving Hollywood types:
'BELIEVE' IT OR NOT: That infectious dance song you heard all last year, Cher's "Believe," set the stage for the Oscar winner ("Moonstruck") to make her pop comeback. The Grammy people handed Cher three nominations, for Record of the Year, Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording. Rivaling her in the Dance Recording category is Jennifer Lopez. Lopez's nomination is for "Wait
