Most moviegoers' mission Memorial Day weekend will be to see Paramount's "Mission: Impossible 2."

The PG-13-rated action adventure sequel -- known for short as "M:I-2" -- got off to a flying start with its Wednesday opening to $12.5 million at a record-setting 3,653 theaters ($3,422 per theater).

"It's a 37% first choice in the tracking," an insider points out, predicting blockbuster business for the long holiday weekend. Looking back, he adds, the original "Mission" was a 27% first choice when it opened, and last year's "Star Wars: Episode One -- The Phantom Menace" was a 43% first choice.

"M:I-2's" Wednesday gross compares very favorably to the original "Mission: Impossible's" opening day total of $11.8 million for Wed., May 22, 1996, at 3,012 theaters ($3,918 per theater). That gross actually included pre-opening Tuesday night preview showings as well

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17, 2000 -- Three months after breaking the Screen Actors Guild commercial strike, British supermodel turned actress Elizabeth Hurley formally has apologized and pledged to make a "significant" contribution to SAG. The Estee Lauder model and former longtime flame of actor Hugh Grant was the first high-profile actor to shoot a non-union commercial during the strike when she filmed a perfume spot in July.

"She was completely unaware of the situation because she doesn't live in this country, and she is extremely apologetic about it," Hurley's agent, Tracey Jacobs of the United Talent Agency, said at the time.

SAG continues to investigate the incident. "She has expressed regret in a letter to the union, but she is definitely going to have to appear before a trial board," said Jerry Hookey, SAG's national strike coordinator. The strike's goal is to convince ca

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 26, 2001 -- The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) recognized some of the year’s best films on Sunday. "Gladiator" was chosen best film, and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" took away best foreign-language film honors. Each of these Oscar contenders received four BAFTA awards in total.

Producers Douglas Wick, David Franzoni and Branko Lustig accepted the best film award for "Gladiator," praising director Ridley Scott during their acceptance speech, who lost out on the best director prize to Ang Lee for "Tiger."

Besides best foreign film and best director, "Crouching Tiger" also won for music (Tan Dun) and costume design (Tim Yip). Of BAFTA and the United Kingdom, Lee said: "You've always been great to me. This is like a second home to me now."

“Gladiator” also won the Orange Audience Award for most popular film of 2000. Scott thank

Moviegoers celebrated "Mummy's" Day this weekend with a record setting $70 million opening. Universal's PG-13 rated adventure sequel "The Mummy Returns" kicked off Hollywood's pre-summer season with a staggering ESTIMATED $70.11 million at 3,104 theaters ($20,615 per theater). "Mummy" accounted for about 65% of the weekend's total key films gross of $107.5 million. "Mummy" is well on its way to what looks like it could be a $200 million gross in domestic theaters. That would be about $45 million more than the first "Mummy" did domestically in 1999.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 17, 2001 -- Just imagine, "Notting Hill" could have been called "Cheek."

At least that's what one Nick Villiers says as the screenwriter sues Universal Pictures, producer Eric Fellner and several others for $15 million, alleging that the 1999 Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant romantic comedy was ripped off from his screenplay, which was titled "Cheek," Daily Variety reports.

The story goes as follows, according to the suit filed last month in Los Angeles Superior Court: Villiers says that he gave Fellner, producer of "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill," his "Cheek" manuscript back in 1998 and was asked to rework it over a period of nine years. Nothing materialized out of his project until the scribe discovered that Fellner had allegedly stolen his idea when "Notting Hill" was released in 1999.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 19, 2000 -- Actor Richard Gere is not only getting religious but political as well.

The 52-year-old actor and star of this year's "Dr. T and the Women" has been a very vocal activist for the independence of Tibet, which has been under the sovereignty of China since 1951. The United Nations has largely ignored the plight of the Tibetan people.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 23, 2000 -- Looks like Elizabeth Hurley is enjoying her autumn in New York. The British paper The Sun has published photographs of the "Bedazzled" star smooching a new beau, fueling talks that the 34-year-old supermodel turned actress has found love again.

The male party in question is film director Steve Bing, who was behind a movie called "Every Breath" back in 1993 (he also executive produced "Get Carter" this year.)

Hurley and Bing were rocking at Elton John's concert in New York on Saturday night, where the Sun photographs were snapped.

Hurley was, of course, the longtime lover of Brit actor Hugh Grant. The two amicably ended their 13-year relationship in May, and was seen in an intimate fashion on a Mediterranean vacation together in August.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 18, 2000 -- Elizabeth Hurley's bedeviled character may have charmed Brendan Fraser in "Bedazzled," but the supermodel turned actress's smiles couldn't win over the striking SAG actors who protested at the film's premiere Tuesday night in the Westwood section of Los Angeles. Carrying posters saying "Go Home Scab" and "Elizabeth, You Make Me Hurl," the members marched in a line in front of the Mann Village Theatre's red carpet before celebrities arrived and continued to press forward with jeers and whistle-blowing when limousines pulled up.

When Hurley finally appeared, the noise grew deafening, and publicists held up umbrellas and movie posters to shield the mob from the actress.

Hurley, for her part, refused to let the mayhem rain on her parade. She answered reporters' questions with candor and even cracked a joke or two about her newly single status.

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 14, 2000 -- Talk about a journalistic no-no. Jane magazine -- the one that printed that story recently in which Liz Hurley said ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant is "less than adequate in bed" -- is eating crow, big time.

The mag has admitted that one of its writers fabricated Hurley's quotes, and has issued a formal apology to the actress.

The retraction comes after Hurley sent a letter to Jane, complaining that she never bad mouthed Grant's talent under the sheets.

"I have spoken about Hugh hundreds, if not thousands of times in the press over the years. I have never said anything mean about him and never would because I truly love him," Hurley said in an extract from the letter, printed in Britain's Daily Mail tabloid.

Jane originally stood by its article, saying Hurley participated in a sex test and that her answers were on tape.

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 28, 2000 – Thirteen might not be an unlucky number after all. Word has it – in the form of a few British newspaper reports – that actor Hugh Grant and model-actress Elizabeth Hurley were spotted together vacationing in the Mediterranean, fueling talks that the ex-couple has rekindled their passion.

Our calls to Grant’s publicist regarding the matter have not yet been returned, so we don't know for sure if love is in the air again.

Hugh, 39, and Hurley, 34, broke up this May. They had been together for 13 years.

Photographs from the aforementioned trip, featuring the Grant and Hurley kissing on a yacht, were printed in the same British newspapers. And one onlooker was quoted in the Daily Express tabloid saying that the two seemed "very much together."

Moviegoers accepted the mission of seeing Paramount's "Mission: Impossible 2" over Memorial Day weekend.

"M:I-2's four-day gross of an ESTIMATED $71.8 million at 3,653 theaters ($19,655 per theater) is 26.4% bigger than the first "Mission's" $56.8 million. It puts "M:I-2" into the record books as the second-biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever.

The biggest Memorial Day opening, Universal and Amblin's 1997 launch of "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," did $90.2 million for four days (May 23-26), but opened on a Friday. "M:I-2's" Wednesday kick off diverted $21 million of ticket sales into Wednesday and Thursday, which might otherwise have bulked up its gross for Friday through Monday.

The sequel's ESTIMATED six-day cume (Wednesday-Monday) of $92.8 million is 23.9% bigger than the original's $74.9 million, which also included Tuesday night previews. "M:I-

HOLLYWOOD, May 23, 2000 -- Is there hope for Divine Brown yet? Hugh Grant, a onetime Sunset Strip patron of Miss Brown, and longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley today confirmed that they've parted romantic ways after 13 years.

Although the tabloids have had Hurley dating up a storm of late, the couple, in a statement, insisted that "no third parties" were involved. Curiously, the pair also termed the split a "temporary thing" (that nonetheless required a press release, of course).

"It is a mutual and amicable decision," the joint statement read.

Grant, 39, and Hurley, 34, began dating in 1986. They have appeared together in a movie just once -- 1988's "Rowing With the Wind."

Aside from the Divine Brown thing, Grant is best known for flummoxing his way through romantic comedies ("Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Notting Hill"); Hurley is a model/actress ("Au

Dinosaurs snapped back to life this weekend as Buena Vista/Disney's "Dinosaur" kicked off to nearly $39 million.

The PG-rated, computer-animated feature, which cut short the chart-topping reign of DreamWorks' "Gladiator," set a record as the year's biggest opening with an ESTIMATED $38.6 million at 3,257 theaters ($11,860 per theater).

"Dinosaur's" per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide or limited release this weekend.

"I think it's great," Buena Vista Distribution president Chuck Viane said Sunday morning.

Noting that some studios had estimated the picture as opening to even bigger numbers, Viane said, "I know some of my competitors have given me more credit than we're giving ourselves, but I'd rather see it than say it and then have to back off. A "Dino"-mite opening by Disney's "Dinosaur" should cut DreamWorks' "Gladiator" down to size this weekend.

After its two-week box office reign, "Gladiator" should fall prey to Buena Vista/Disney's opening of its PG-rated computer-animated "Dinosaur" at 3,257 theaters.

"Dinosaur's" 21% first-choice tracking doesn't really tell the whole story, according to insiders. "It's just fine, because kids' movies don't track," says one executive.

Estimates by Hollywood handicappers of just how big "Dinosaur" will open range from a cautious $25-35 million to a really exuberant $35-40 million. Making projections even more challenging is the fact that a great many "Dinosaur" tickets will be sold at reduced prices to children.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 13, 2000 -- Can audiences expect a Ron Howard/Tom Cruise reunion? Maybe. Daily Variety reports today that Howard is in negotiations to helm the adaptation of "A Beautiful Mind," a biography on Nobel Prize winner John Forbes Nash Jr. who was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic.

Howard has just finished directing Jim Carrey in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and, if all goes well, will start shooting "A Beautiful Mind" at the end of the year.

The question is whether Cruise, who worked with Howard in "Far and Away," will commit to the project, as well. He's said to be interested in playing Nash.
