NEW YORK, N.Y., Feb. 22, 2000 -- Who needs rehearsals? Apparently not Diane Keaton, director and star of "Hanging Up."

In the comedy hit, Keaton, Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow play three ambitious sisters who are drawn closer together when their womanizing screenwriter father (Walter Matthau) becomes hospitalized. The spunky on-screen spontaneity suggests Keaton's loose-leash approach.

Indeed, according to Bill Robinson, the film's producer and Keaton's longtime partner in her Blue Relief production company: "Diane doesn't believe in a formal rehearsal process. She feels that you can kill whatever spontaneity and freshness the actors bring to the role if you keep putting them through their paces. The rehearsal process for her was having a read-through or going out to dinner and talking about the character."

Compare that rehearsal-lite approach with that adopted by the

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2000 -- Filmmaker Roger Vadim, best known for discovering Brigitte Bardot and keeping company with the likes of Jane Fonda and Catherine Deneuve, died today of cancer. He was 72.

The Paris-born Vadim was married to the then-teenage Bardot when he made his directorial debut in 1956 with "And God Created Woman." The film launched Bardot's career as a sex symbol and stirred much talk for its outrageous (at the time) unveiling of her skin. In the short run, "And God ..." was banned in several countries. In the long run, it helped launch France's New Wave film movement of the 1950s.

In 1965, Vadim wed a 27-year-old, pre-controversial Jane Fonda (his third wife). Two years later, the couple teamed to reveal Fonda's own assets on screen with the Vadim-directed sci-fi cult hit "Barbarella". The couple had one daughter, Vanessa, before splitt

CNN mogul Ted Turner and Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda were formally and amicably divorced Tuesday, ending the 10-year marriage, a lawyer for Fonda told Reuters. They married in December 1991, the third marriage for both, and became Atlanta's star couple until they separated more than a year ago. Turner, 62, said in a statement, "We will always remain close friends and I wish Jane all the very best." Similarly, Fonda, 63, said in a statement, "I feel sadness. We shared 10 years together and I will always care for him. Now it's time to move on and I wish him well." Turner said recently that the major reason for the breakup was Fonda's decision to become a Christian. "It was a shock," Turner told Reuters, known for his disdain of religion. Fonda, who is writing her memoirs, told Hello! magazine in an interview, "One of the things I want to talk about in my memoirs is the fact that separation or divorce doesn't necessarily represent failure."

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 16, 2000 -- At least one hospital in Atlanta isn't complaining that actress Jane Fonda relocated there 10 years ago. Fonda has donated $1.3 million to the hospital's adolescent health services. The Grady Health System will use the funds to teach young people about taking care of their reproductive health. In her statement, Fonda said the gift will allow Atlanta to have "state-of-the-art" health services geared for adolescents. Young men as well as women will be targeted in the program.

The Oscar-winning actress, whose exercise videos helped fuel the aerobics craze in the 1980s, founded the nonprofit Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention in 1995.

Since she married cable mogul Ted Turner in 1991, the 62-year-old Fonda has withdrawn from the filmmaking scene. The couple announced their separation in January.

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 28, 2000 -- It's official: Drew Barrymore's latest film project, a retelling of the '60s classic Barbarella, has now received funding from Fox and Warner Bros.

John August, who directed the darkly comic Go and is rewriting Jurassic Park 3, has signed on to direct.

In the revamped version, Barrymore -- who also serves as producer -- plays a meek yet sexy woman who leads a planet-wide revolution to overthrow a corrupt government. Although the film will be similar to Jane Fonda's original, Barrymore insists her version is not a remake of the campy sci-fi tale.

Representatives for the project, attempting to describe the storyline, call the upcoming film a cross between "sci-fi and Woody Allen sex comedies."

HOLLYWOOD, May 24, 2000 -- In 1972, Jane Fonda went to North Vietnam and was branded "Hanoi Jane" for her anti-war views. And around the same time, Karen Rosenfeld was born.

What do the two women have in common? Five months ago, Fonda split from husband Ted Turner. And this month, Rosenfeld is dating Turner.

The national media are fixated today on reports that 61-year-old Turner is smitten with a (oh, the scandal!) younger woman. A much younger woman (she's 28). And not just any much younger woman, a smart one to boot.

According to authorities on these matters (in this case, the gossip columnists of the New York Daily News), the media magnate's new hottie is a brainiac who works as an English professor at Marymount Manhattan College on the Upper East Side. Rosenfeld has degrees from several universities and is now working on a doctorate from Columbia.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 24, 2000 -- The morning after the Golden Globes, the Directors Guild of America heated up the awards competition by announcing its nominees for director of the year.

This year's DGA nods went to Globe winner Sam Mendes for "American Beauty,"Spike Jonze for "Being John Malkovich," Frank Darabont for "The Green Mile," Michael Mann for "The Insider" and M. Night Shyamalan for "The Sixth Sense."All are first-time feature-film nominees except for Darabont, who was nominated in 1994 for "The Shawshank Redemption."

The winner of the DGA is practically guaranteed a win for Best Director in the Academy Award race. In its 50-year history, only four winners have not gone on to win the Oscar; Anthony Harvey (in 1968 for "The Lion Winter"), Francis Ford Coppola (in 1972 for "The Godfather"), Steven Spielberg (in 1985 for "The Color Purple") and Ron Howard (i

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 14, 1999 Ð Late-night TV host David Letterman underwent emergency multiple-bypass heart surgery in New York today, one day after revealing on his CBS program that he was to undergo tests to determine if he had arterial disease.

Letterman's prognosis for recovery was said to be excellent. CBS will air reruns of "The Late Show with David Letterman" until its titular host returns.

"Dave has the heart muscle of a 20-year-old,'' Letterman surgeon Dr. O. Wayne Isom told reporters following the surgery.

Still, it appears the entertainer also had blocked arteries. Some reports said Letterman underwent a quintuple bypass.

The comic was at work as late as Thursday, when during a taping he told guest Regis Philbin that was to undergo an angiogram today. That show will air tonight.

Letterman, 52, said he has high blood cholesterol an

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 4, 2000 -- No more "Barbarella" screenings on TBS? No "Klute" tributes on TNT?

The mind boggles with the potential fallout of today's bombshell announcement: Cable mogul Ted Turner and movie-star wife Jane Fonda are separating after nine years of power-couple happiness.

In a brief statement issued (where else?) via Turner's CNN, the two said: "While we continue to be committed to the long-term success of our marriage, we find ourselves at a juncture where we must each take some personal time for ourselves."

"Therefore, we have mutually decided to spend some time apart."

Apparently to show that, despite such dire circumstances, they haven't lost their collective sense of humor, the couple added: "We ask that you respect that decision."

The media have been respecting Turner and Fonda for more than a year, running with sto

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 3, 2000 -- The "American Psycho" saga has taken another twist. After the movie ratings board made a final 11-4 ruling Wednesday upholding the film's NC-17 rating, Lions Gate Releasing announced that director Mary Harron will re-edit the film to achieve an R.

The film, which opens in April, stars Christian Bale as a young executive with a psychopathic taste for murder; it was given its rating for a scene depicting group sex among Bale and two prostitutes. But not to worry; we're sure the original cut will make its way onto DVD someday.

UN-MODEL BEHAVIOR: Supermodel Naomi Campbell apparently has worries deeper than which world runways to strut, as we reported Wednesday. The British diva pleaded guilty in a Canadian court to assaulting her former assistant and was given an absolute discharge, meaning she will not have a criminal record in Canada. <
