HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 5, 2000 -- Director Kevin Smith is apparently experiencing a case of déjà vu in his next project.
The "Chasing Amy" and "Clerks" helmer has released the cast list for his next film, his follow-up to the controversial "Dogma," and nearly all the stars from "Dogma" are on the list, with some in multiple roles.
According to Smith’s Web site, viewaskew.com, Ben Affleck will return as "Chasing Amy’s" Holden McNeil as well as portray two new roles, Jason Lee will reprise his characters from "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy," and Matt Damon will be playing three parts in the upcoming film.
Also returning from "Dogma’s" cast list are Chris Rock and singer Alanis Morissette.
Jay and Silent Bob and the original "Clerks," Randall and Dante, are also slated to appear in the film.
While the flick’s plot remains vague, Smith has said in his online col

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 18, 2000 -- How about this for an ensemble cast? Daily Variety reports today that Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Billy Crystal and Catherine Zeta-Jones might all rub shoulders in the new Revolution Studios comedy "American’s Sweethearts."
Written by Crystal and "Analyze This" writer Peter Tolan, the film depicts a Hollywood supercouple who must stay together to promote a film despite their marriage being on the rocks.
Cusack and Zeta-Jones are set to play the A list lovebirds, Crystal is eyeing the role of the couple’s publicist and Roberts might play the Zeta-Jones character’s sister.
Revolution top dog Joe Roth is thinking of directing the flick, which goes into production in January.

A rich "Parents" opening turned the box office green after two months of lackluster grosses.
Universal's PG-13-rated comedy "Meet the Parents" met with greater success than insiders had anticipated. Rather than the $18-22 million range that many Hollywood handicappers were expecting, "Parents" opened to a sizzling ESTIMATED $29.11 million at 2,614 theaters ($11,135 per theater).
"Parents'" international release is through DreamWorks Pictures, which co-financed the film and will share equally in its success. "Parents" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend.
The film set records as the biggest October opening ever and the biggest openings ever for its stars Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller, according to a Universal spokesman. It is Universal's fourth consecutive film to open in first place, following "Nutty Professor II:

Denzel Washington scored a box office touchdown, finally giving Hollywood some ticket sales to "Remember."
Buena Vista/Disney's PG-rated football drama "Remember the Titans," from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, kicked off in first place with a muscular ESTIMATED $21.2 million at 1,865 theaters ($11,383 per theater).
"Titans" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend.
"Titans" marks the first $20 million-plus since the arrival of Columbia's "Hollow Man" last Aug. 4. It ranks as Denzel Washington's biggest opening, out-performing the $18.6 million that "Crimson Tide" kicked off with in May 1995.
Despite the strong performance by "Titans," key films in the marketplace continued to under-perform compared to a year earlier. Overall, the marketplace was down over 27% from last year.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 24, 2000 -- Horror was the word this weekend, both on screen and off as Hollywood suffered yet another under-performing weekend.
Columbia's R-rated horror sequel "Urban Legends: Final Cut" from Phoenix Pictures took the biggest slice of box office pie, placing first with an energetic estimated $8.8 million at 2,539 theaters ($3,466 per theater).
Insiders had anticipated a double-digit launch by "Urban." It was the third consecutive weekend in which the film placing first did not gross $10 million or more.
"The original opened to $10.5 million and went on to do $38 million. We certainly hope we can get to the $25-30 range, which would make it very profitable for us. It's a $14.6 million production cost, so we make money for sure," Sony Pictures Releasing president Jeff Blake said Sunday morning.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 17, 2000 -- There was lots of Olympic Gold but very little box office gold this weekend.
Insiders had anticipated low grosses and a close race for first place, and that's exactly what they got. With ticket sales down over 33 percent from this time last year, it took only $5.7 million for Universal's "The Watcher" to nail down the top spot.
Key films in the marketplace - those grossing $500,000 or more for the weekend - did approximately $47.58 million. Distribution sources said Sunday morning they believed that was the lowest total since the weekend of Sept. 11-13, 1998, when key films took in $48.85 million.
Was it the Olympics that killed the movie business this weekend? Key distribution executives share some thoughts about that in today's report (see OLYMPICS IMPACT below).

SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 10, 2000 -- Moviegoers' eyes were on "The Watcher" as Hollywood's fall season got off to an unexciting start.
Box office levels across the board were considerably less than insiders had anticipated going into the weekend. With many studio executives out of town attending the Toronto Film Festival, few insights were offered as to what went wrong. Overall, key films were estimated to have grossed about 22 percent less than this time last year.
With televised coverage of the Olympics expected to provide stiff competition from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1, Hollywood is holding back on opening high-profile films in September. That will almost certainly be reflected in ticket sales for the month.
"With the Olympics and everything else, I think it's going to be a lousy fall," predicted one insider.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 18, 2001 -- Ray Liotta and Jason Patric have joined the indie forces.
The two actors will co-star in the thriller "Narc," The Hollywood Reporter says. The story follows a narcotics officer (Patric) assigned to investigate the death of a rookie cop.
He gets teamed up with the cop's former partner (Liotta), whom he finds out is up to no good.
Liotta is also executive producing the film, which goes into production in Toronto next week.
KAREN GOES BIG SCREEN: "Will & Grace's" Emmy Award-winning Megan Mullally might join the cast of "Stealing Stanford," Daily Variety reports.
If she signs, this would mark the actress's first leading role in a feature film. The film stars Jason Lee as a guy who turns to petty crime in order to finance his niece's education.
Before "Will & Grace," Mullally performed on Broadway and in other theatri

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 10, 2000 -- Pretty woman Julia Roberts is certainly no stranger to revolution -- or shall we say Joe Roth's Revolution Studios.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the $20 million per pic starlet will lend her star power to the preliminarily titled "Project 3" for the titular studio. The project will reteam Roberts with "The Mexican" helmer Gore Verbinski, who became available after Leonardo DiCaprio dropped out of DreamWorks' "Catch Me If You Can," which he was set to direct.
Reminiscent of George Cukor's 1994 classic "Gaslight," "Project 3" is described as a story wherein a man tries to convince his wife that she is going crazy.
Besides this film, Roberts is also committed to other Revolution projects such as "American Sweethearts" and "Replay."

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 9, 2000 -- We don't know what's stranger: Adam Sandler doing a P.T. Anderson-type movie, or P.T. Anderson doing an Adam Sandler-type film.
Either way, the synergy might just happen. Daily Variety says today that the "Little Nicky" supercomic is fielding opportunities for his next project, and one of them is a script which "Magnolia" helmer Anderson specifically wrote with Sandler and actress Emily Watson in mind.
But competing for Sandler's attention right now is another comedy penned by his writing partner, Tim Herlihy. And the funnyman's involvement with either project is likely contingent upon the anticipated actors and writers strike next summer.
But in the meantime, Sandler's latest comedy, "Little Nicky," opens this Friday.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 16, 2000 -- Who'd have guessed that so many people would want to play an ape? But it's true. After Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter, the latest actor to join the remake of "The Planet of the Apes" as a simian is "The Green Mile" man, Michael Clarke Duncan, The Associated Press says.
Specifically, Duncan is going to play a silverback gorilla.
Helmed by Tim Burton, the much-anticipated remake also stars Mark Wahlberg, who's got the role of the rare humanoid crashing the planet.
BACK TO 'BASIC': We know a good cast when we see one: Catherine Keener ("Being John Malkovich) and Benicio Del Toro ("The Way of the Gun") might both star in "Basic," Daily Variety says. The drama concerns a DEA agent who's investigating the disappearance of an army instructor and several of his cadets.
