The weeklong gathering showcases fresh comic talent, and details about the festival will be announced over the next few months.

Crystal's credits include "Analyze This," "When Harry Met Sally" and "City Slickers." He's also a celebrated Academy Awards host and six-time Emmy winner.

Past AFI honorees include Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Monty Python and Jerry Seinfeld.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 8, 2000 --First came love, then came marriage. Now Jerry Seinfeld is pushing a baby carriage.

The comedian's wife, Jessica Skylar, 29, gave birth Tuesday to the couple's first offspring, daughter Sascha, Reuters reports. Seinfeld's publicist wouldn't provide anymore information regarding the little tyke, only saying that mother and baby are doing fine.

Seinfeld is best known for portraying the forever bachelor during the nine-year run of his hit NBC show "Seinfeld." The news of his new daughter comes after a much publicized gossip frenzy over the couple's courtship.

Seinfeld, 46, met his wife at a New York gym soon after she had returned from her honeymoon with her first husband, Broadway heir Eric Nederlander. The newlyweds divorced soon after. Seinfeld courted her for 16 months, and they were married Dec. 25, 1999.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 25, 2000 -- The jokes have paid off for Carl Reiner. The legendary funnyman joined the list of comedians honored with The Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Award on Tuesday. Reiner joins Richard Pryor and Jonathan Winters as the comedians that the Center has honored every year since 1997, Reuters reports. Fellow comedians Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin and Dick Van Dyke were among the celebrities who spoke at the event to pay homage to Reiner.

The 78-year-old got his big break in 1950 on Sid Caesar's classic TV shows "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour." Before that, he spent three years on Broadway. But he hit the big time on the small screen in 1961 when he created and wrote "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

``That was my baby. It was about my reality, my life, my ideas and thoughts. So I'm most proud of that,'' he told reporters before the Kennedy Center gala.

"Friends" (© NBC) SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 26, 2000 -- Maintaining the lifestyle of the rich and famous ain't cheap. And who'd know that better than those perky artistes known as the stars of "Friends" -- who, as the TV nation is well-aware of, are collectively demanding a lofty pay raise as their contracts and the show's sixth-season run down.

As their current monetary compensation goes, each member of the "Friends" sextet pulls in a respectable $125,000 per episode this year, the final stage of a gradual pay hike (from a $40,000 starting point) that was negotiated out of a similar collective bargaining stalemate in 1996.

And despite that's $125,000 an episode, the "Friends" coup is said to be asking for a lot more moolah this time around: as much as $800,000 per episode, per actor -- plus retroactive back pay for this year's 24 shows, according to one report i

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 6, 2000 -- Kramer's gonna be an uncle. Formerly employed sitcom notable Jerry Seinfeld, who finally gave up bachelorhood last December, is now ready to give up sleep. He's going to be a father.

The new production from Seinfeld and his bride, Jessica Sklar, is due in about six months.

The task of making the baby announcement to the world was left to Regis Philbin, which is nice because the guy doesn't get enough ink these days.

"I've got big news for you today," Reeg said on this morning's "Live! With Regis & Kathie Lee." "...There's a little Jerry Seinfeld coming."

Philbin said Seinfeld spilled the beans during a telephone conversation on Wednesday night. The Ubiquitous One went on to suggest a couple of names, including "Kramer George Seinfeld" and the inevitable "Regis Seinfeld."

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 3, 2000 -- It's amazing how one hit pop song and an electronic gizmo that makes your voice sound like a robot can lead to global domination.

Forbes magazine released its annual "Celebrity 100" list Thursday, power-ranking the world's greatest actors, entertainers, athletes, authors and other notables according to how much moola they made last year and how much media attention they received making said moola. Most of the names in the Top 10 were no-brainers, given their recent successes: Julia Roberts is the world's No. 1 omnipotent celeb (with estimated 1999 earnings of $50 million), followed by people like George Lucas (No. 2 -- $400 mil), Oprah Winfrey (No. 3 -- $150 mil), Tom Hanks (No. 4 -- $71.5 mil), golfer Tiger Woods (No. 7 -- $47 mil) and Steven Spielberg (No. 10 -- $60 mil).

But then there's No. 9. One word: Cher.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- The infectious bug that has been plaguing TV series of late -- you know, the "I feel that my time with the show is up and I've decided to move on" epidemic -- has claimed another victim.

The latest casualty is none other than "Veronica's Closet's" Kathy Najimy. Trade papers report today that the actress, who plays Olive, Veronica's (Kirstie Alley) trusted sidekick and confidant, will bid farewell to the NBC comedy at the end of this season.

Najimy tells Variety that her decision to leave the show is based purely on personal reasons. With "Veronica's Closet" behind, Najimy reportedly plans to spend more time with her 3-year-old daughter, not to mention more of the same said time on a would-be "feature career."

Of course, the concept of "leaving" "Veronica's Closet" might become a moot point. The unbeloved comed

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 7, 2000 -- David Letterman or no, CBS is determined to milk those "Late Show" reruns and famous guest host offers for all they're worth.

The network has announced that another week of Letterman reruns is in store for the "Late Night" time slot -- albeit with some special star-power favor. Starting tonight until Friday, famous people -- in the caliber of Jerry Seinfeld, Danny DeVito, Bruce Willis, Bill Cosby, and others -- will recount personal "Late Show" memories and Letterman-related special moments that would serve as openers to each show until the end of the week.

"Late Show" fans need not worry about the whereabouts of their favorite talk show host. The weirdly eulogistic nature of these "backstage" conversations has nothing to do with the availability of the convalescing Letterman. Dave's slated to come back to the late-night talk show as

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 28, 2000 -- How about this for a "Late Show" Top 10 list idea: "People Most Likely to Replace Dave During His Recovery."

That's right, "Late Show" fans. Indefinite weeks of reruns may finally be over as producers of the late night talk show contemplate offers from various TV celebs to fill in as guest host for the show while Letterman recovers from heart surgery.

The list of rumored candidates includes "Who wants to Be a Millionaire" host Regis Philbin, retired sitcom king Jerry Seinfeld, shock jock Howard Stern, and morning talk show hostess Rosie O'Donnell.

Letterman has been off the "Late Show" since Jan. 14 when he underwent a quintuple bypass to clear a blocked artery. He was released from the hospital Jan. 29 and is expected to return to the show in six to eight weeks. No word from the Letterman camp yet on the host's reaction to the

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 26, 1999 -- Perennial single guy Jerry Seinfeld finally threw in the towel Christmas Day, wedding public-relations executive Jessica Sklar in a small, hush-hush ceremony in New York City.

It is the first marriage for Seinfeld, 45; the second (in 18 months) for Sklar, 28. The bride's initial husband-and-wife teamup (with theater scion Eric Nederlander) ended when she started dating Seinfeld weeks after she returned from her 1998 honeymoon.

Seinfeld is, of course, best known for his long-running self-titled TV sitcom, "Seinfeld." Sklar is best known for dating Seinfeld.

According to the New York Post, some 40 guests watched the couple exchange their vows at a traditional Jewish service. Not among those 40 guests: the groom's ex-"Seinfeld" cohorts Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21, 1999 — Finally some good news for Jason Priestley.

The ex-"Beverly Hills 90210" star's directorial feature debut, "Barenaked in America," a documentary about pop-rock's Barenaked Ladies ("One Week"), has been selected to play the Slamdance Film Festival.

"Barenaked in America" is one of six films chosen to play the Special Screenings section of Slamdance, the chief alternative venue (and Park City, Utah, neighbor) to Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival. Slamdance is scheduled to run Jan. 22-29. (Sundance will play Jan. 20-30.)

Whether Priestley is able to attend his own screening may depend on what happens in a Los Angeles courtroom. The actor turned director is facing felony drunken driving charges for a Dec. 2 crash that trashed his Porsche and left his passenger with a broken arm. Priestley is currently free on $50,000 bail.
