Unless the Grinch scares people away from their local cinemas, a new record could be set at the box office Christmas weekend as a half-dozen newly released dramas boasting Academy Award-winning casts will compete with several children's films and other holdovers from previous weeks.
In each of the past three years, a new box-office record was set on Christmas weekend, and with the release of films such as Warner Bros.' "Any Given Sunday" starring Al Pacino, Dennis Quaid and Cameron Diaz, Paramount's "The Talented Mr. Ripley" starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Jude Law, and Universal's "Man on the Moon" with Jim Carrey, industry experts believe movie grosses for Friday through Sunday could surpass $150 million - breaking the Christmas weekend record of $147.5 million set last year, when films such as "Patch Adams," You've Got Mail" and "Stepmom" were hot ite

NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 24, 2000 -- The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 57th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night was dubbed "Hollywood's party of the year," and it certainly brought out some of Hollywood's biggest names. But a closer look under the show's "Holly-hood" reveals New York, like Hollywood, as big a star of the ceremony.
Yes, Hollywood pillars such as Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise, Jack Lemmon and Peter Fonda hugged statuettes for, respectively, "Man on the Moon," "Magnolia," "Inherit the Wind" and "Passion of Ayn Rand." And DreamWorks' "American Beauty" and Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 2," both, cinematically speaking, very much American beauties, are most definitely brilliant Hollywood creations.
But, moving right along and Hollywood aside, New Yorkers couldn't get enough awards and recognition. Central Park West's Michael J. Fox, who sadly is leaving "Spin Cit

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 13, 2000 -- They almost made it through the disastrous breakup year that has characterized much of Y2K, but alas Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger are just not meant to be.
Carrey, 38, and Zellweger, 31 -- who met on the set of this summer's "Me, Myself & Irene" last year during filming -- have ended their yearlong relationship, E! News Daily reported Tuesday.
Both actors' publicists have confirmed the breakup, with the actress's rep being the more vocal of the two about the matter.
"As of a couple weeks ago, Jim Carrey and Renée Zellweger are no longer in a relationship," publicist Leslie Sloan told E!.
Just last month, the now ex-couple were still practically glued to each other during the "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" premiere in Universal City, Calif.
Zellweger, however, was without Carrey at Tuesday's Fire and Ice Ba

HOLLYWOOD, June 26, 2000 – Is America's love affair with Jim Carrey over and done with? Do the two parties just need a little space? Is everything comfy and cozy on the laugh track? Or, does Carrey need to stay out of R-rated movies, and avoid playing deranged characters, if he wants to continue his slapstick reign?
Me, Myself & Irene" opened last weekend at No. 1, pulling in $24.2 million. Nobody's saying that's a poor showing, but it's not in the same box-office league as some of Carrey's biggest hits.
Case in point: "Batman Forever" raked in $52.7 million during its opening weekend in 1995, "Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls" posted $37.8 mil (also in 1995), and even Carrey's first real dramatic movie, "The Truman Show," posted $31.5 mil in its first weekend two years ago.
Carrey's biggest success as a solo star came in "Liar, Liar," which opened with a $31.4 m

"Three Kings," David O. Russell's Gulf War actioner, was named Best Picture by the Boston Film Critics Association today.
The film, which also won Russell a Best Director award, follows American soldiers who find a map in the desert leading to an arsenal of stolen gold bullion. As they hunt for the treasure, the trio encounter atrocities of war and face moral dilemmas.
Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube, "Three Kings" grossed about $58 million at the box office and was earlier named one of the National Board of Review's top 10 of the year. It's the second year in a row Clooney has starred in the association's top picture; the 1998 Best Picture was Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight," co-starring Jennifer Lopez.
Hilary Swank picked up her third critics' award of 1999, named Best Actress for "Boys Don't Cry." She plays Brandon Teena, a Nebraska woma

A bounty of buzz-heavy, star-studded new releases will kick off the countdown to Christmas this year, promising something different and special each day of the week.
The holiday movie bonanza commences Tuesday with the limited release of Sony's "Girl, Interrupted." Adapted from Susanna Kaysen's critically acclaimed memoir, the film stars Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie as two iconoclastic young women confined to a mental institution.
Lifting the box office spirit Wednesday are three wildly anticipated films of different ilk. Taking care of the laugh department is director Milos Forman's "Man on the Moon," where funnyman Jim Carrey plays funnyman Andy Kaufman.
For those lamenting the absence of televised sports programming on Christmas, there's Oliver Stone's adrenaline-racing, testosterone-pumping "Any Given Sunday," a homage to the gritty underside of football st

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 30, 2000 -- A police shooting at a Los Angeles Halloween party has claimed the life of an actor.
Anthony Dwain Lee, 39, was attending a crowded Halloween party in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles early Saturday morning when L.A. police officer Tarriel Hopper shot him several times through a glass door from the outside of the house.
Lee was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The Los Angeles Police Department was responding to calls complaining about the noisy party. And according to a statement released by the LAPD, Hopper opened fire at Lee when the victim pointed at police with what turned out to be a fake gun.
Among Lee's screen credits are the 1997 Jim Carrey hit comedy "Liar, Liar," the critically acclaimed CBS drama "Brooklyn South" and an upcoming episode of "ER."
A vigil for Lee is planned for today.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 3, 2000 -- The Grinch continues to get greener and greener.

After a record-setting Thanksgiving feast, Hollywood got only box office crumbs this weekend as ticket sales plunged 50% from their holiday levels.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment's PG-rated blockbuster comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" continued to top the chart in its third weekend with a still festive estimated $27.11 million (-48%) at 3,138 theaters (+4 theaters; $8,640 per theater). Its cume is approximately $172.0 million, heading for $250 million.
(NOTE: All percentage comparisons today are calculated against the three-day weekend portion of the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period.)

HOLLYWOOD, June 23, 2000 -- If we can call Fox's "Titan A.E." a bomb (and since the $80 million toon only made $9.3 million last weekend, let's do just that), then did its shrapnel take out a studio chief? Officially, Fox Chairman Bill Mechanic resigned Thursday to launch his own film company. Unofficially, the word is that Fox honchos were none too happy with Mechanic's recent string of un-hits: "Fight Club," "Anna and the King" and the aforementioned "Titan A.E."
Of course, Mechanic is also bailing before Fox opens one of its seemingly can't-miss properties: "Me, Myself & Irene" with Jim Carrey.
"The studio is in excellent shape with a strong summer lineup and terrific product into next summer," Mechanic said in a statement, "and so I feel now is the time to pursue other personal ambitions."

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 2, 2000 -- "Stuart Little" may squeak softly, but he carried a big cheese stick at the box office during New Year's weekend.
Columbia Pictures' animated talking mouse movie returned to the No. 1 spot, surging ahead of Al Pacino and Matt Damon and claiming a place in the cinema record book.
With total receipts topping $7 billion for the first time ever, 1999 was a record-setting year at the U.S. box office. "Stuart Little" closed out the year with another historical footnote by grossing an estimated $52 million during the final week of the century, the most ever for a family-oriented film during the Christmas-to-New-Year period, according to studio officials.
The film, which bowed at No. 1 two weeks ago, then slipped to third place over the Christmas weekend, entered Y2K by rebounding with an estimated $16 million in its third weekend.

Moviegoers will "Cast" most of their box office votes for Tom Hanks this weekend.
"Cast Away," 20th Century Fox's PG-13-rated drama reteaming Hanks and "Forrest Gump" director Robert Zemeckis, opens at nearly 2,800 theaters.
"Sunday is going to be off because its Christmas Eve, but with Christmas on a Monday this year it's going to be a four-day weekend," an insider explains. "Based on what 'What Women Want' did last week (opening to $33.6 million), 'Cast Away' could open to $30 million-plus for four days. They'll be number one."
"A lot of business is going to happen over the four days," predicts another studio source. "I assume 'Cast Away' is going to be number one. I think it's going to do around $35 million."
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, "Cast Away" stars Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt.

"The Grinch" continued making a mountain of money, easily holding on to first place for a fourth straight weekend.

Its cume is approximately $195.5 million, heading for $250 million-plus.
"It's exhilarating to have 'Grinch' the Number One film four weekends in a row; and as we move closer to the actual holiday season, having this film achieve the $200 million mark prior to that is most gratifying for Universal and Imagine Entertainment," Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said Sunday morning.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 26, 2000 -- Dr. Seuss' "Grinch" was just what the doctor ordered for theater owners, lifting their spirits with nearly $74 million in Thanksgiving ticket sales.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment's PG-rated blockbuster comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" from director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer and star Jim Carrey easily held on to the top spot in its second weekend.
Going into the long Thanksgiving period, insiders' were seeing stiff competition on their radar screens for "Grinch" from Buena Vista's twin openings of "Unbreakable" (Touchstone) and "102 Dalmatians" (Disney). But it was clear as early as Thanksgiving morning when estimates of Wednesday's grosses became available that "Grinch" would top the holiday chart. "The Grinch" stole the weekend box office with $55 million in very green grosses.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment's PG-rated comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" easily evicted "Charlie's Angels" from first place with a record-setting estimated $55.11 million at 3,127 theaters ($17,625 per theater).
"Grinch," which is playing on over 4,200 screens, had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide or limited release last weekend.
"It's the highest non-sequel opener ever," Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said Sunday morning. "In all-time rankings, it's fifth, including holidays and summer because four others are sequels. It's Universal's biggest non-holiday opening because we have the Number One with 'Lost World.' HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 21, 2000 -- The 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards is shaping up to be one heck of a testosterone-charged run.
Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic" and Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" have emerged as the frontrunners in this year's race for the Globes, each receiving five nods apiece as nominations for the annual bash were announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in Beverly Hills, Calif..
Trailing closely behind are Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical rock flick "Almost Famous," "Chocolat," "Wonder Boys" and Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," each earning four nominations.
Soderbergh's drug trafficking drama (which has yet to bow in theaters) picked up almost all the prized loot with a nod for best picture (drama), best director, best screenplay for scribe Stephen Gaghan and a bes
