SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 26, 2000 -- Every few years or so, there comes a film that seeks to capture the spirit of a lost generation.

John Cusack And every few years or so, John Cusack seems to come out of relative seclusion to star in it.

So the tradition continues this week with "High Fidelity" (opening wide, Friday), yet another serving of offbeat meandering through the mindset of the thirtysomething. Based on the novel of the same name by Nick Hornby, the flick revolves around the existential crisis of a record store manager (Cusack) who's struggling with the thinning appeal of slackerdom and the loss of his girlfriend (played by Joelle Hjejle).

Co-scripted by Cusack and the "Grosse Pointe Blank" writing team of D.V. DeVincentis and Steve Pink, the film features one awesome supporting cast, including Lili Taylor, Sara Gilbert, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tim

--NYPD Blue's Rick Schroder has turned in his badge and gun.

Schroder announced Friday that he's leaving the hit cop series because he wants to spend more time with his family.

"The long hours required to shoot NYPD Blue would prevent me from being where I really want to be at this time--which is with my family," Schroder said in a statement.

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 31, 2000 -- Madonna's "Music" is movin' on up. The Queen of Music’s latest single made a giant leap, 12 slots to be exact, to the No. 2 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart. The hip-hop flavored ditty shot up right behind Janet Jackson's "Doesn't Really Matter," which has been at the No. 1 spot for the past three weeks.

"Music" also made a jump on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart from No. 10 to the No. 1 spot, knocking off "Let's Get Married" by Jagged Edge. Others artists continued to creep up the charts this week, including Christina Aguilera's "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)" (from No. 23 to No. 18) and Next's "Wifey" (from No. 8 to No. 7).

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 14, 2000 -- Maybe they should call Carlos Santana "King of the World." Just a few months after his veritable sweep of the Grammy Awards, Santana took three trophies, including the record of the year award for "Corazon Espinado," his duet with Mexican rock band Mana, at the newfangled Latin Grammys on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

"It feels like the first kiss," Santana said after winning. "It feels very natural and divine and human." The guitar god extraordinaire dedicated his awards to Africa, the women of the world, bilingual education and Nelson Mandela.

It was a star-studded event, as they say. Heavyweights such as Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and 'N Sync were among those trolling down the red carpet, and Ricky Martin opened the ceremony by performing a tribute to the late Tito Puente. The show was hosted by Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia

HOLLYWOOD, June 18, 2000 -- Remember when David Caruso left "NYPD Blue" in a massive firestorm of controversy to become a huge movie star? David Caruso "?

No, not the singer ... he’s an actor. He was on "NYPD Blue" before Jimmy Smits. No, seriously, there was a guy named David Caruso, and he was the star of the show. Remember?

Well, anyway, David Caruso returns to TV today in the made for cable nail-biter "Deadlocked" (8 p.m. EDT/PDT, TNT). Caruso plays the prosecutor in this courtroom thriller with a twist. Charles S. Dutton ("Roc," "Alien 3") -- one of the most convincing angry men in show business -- is the "twist." He plays an angry man, convinced his very guilty-looking son (whom Caruso is prosecuting) is not guilty, and he decides to hold the jury hostage until somebody (Caruso) proves he is right. It’s a cool plot, and both Caruso and Dutton deliver the tension en

HOLLYWOOD, June 8, 2000 -- He's been a guest critic on "Roger Ebert and The Movies," he's appeared in a few Hollywood films and, by all accounts, he's the biggest (literally) and best-known entertainment reporter on the Internet. But to his compatriots in cyberspace, Harry Knowles' name isn't Harry Knowles. It's mud.

A feud is brimming between the proprietor of Ain't It Cool News (www.aint-it-cool-news.com) and the Web masters of a half-dozen or so other movie-news sites, who claim that Knowles has repeatedly stolen insider movie-news scoops, taking credit as if he (or one of his many moles) had gotten it first.

And if anything ticks off an Internet movie-rumor gurus (or journalists, in general), it's when another Web site lifts information without crediting the source.

HOLLYWOOD, June 2, 2000 -- The ad campaign for "Godzilla 2000" is under way. Unfortunately. As previously announced, Sony will drop a dubbed version of the latest Japanese-made Big G flick into more than 2,000 theaters Aug. 11. And to promote the release, movie posters are showing up in theater lobbies, bearing schlocky, C-grade artwork reminiscent of camp classics such as "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster" (wherein the monster battles a living pile of sludge) and "Godzilla vs. Megalon" (a gigantic cockroach with drill-bit arms).

The posters, which look like they were painted by a 9-year-old, bear the tag line: "Get ready to crumble!"

Yeesh.

Granted, Godzilla isn't "Star Wars," but the big guy is a bona-fide sci-fi franchise with 20-plus films under his belt. So, how come distributors always deem it necessary to exploit the cheese factor? Even Sony's megabudget "God

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 30, 2000 -- As the box-office turns: Can an aging slacker suffering a romantic crisis, the second-string heartthrob from "Dawson's Creek," and yet another "animated epic" join forces to end Queen Julia Roberts' reign atop the box-office heap? Then again, will Jet Li karate-kick all of their butts?

This weekend, four major new movies ("The Road to El Dorado," "The Skulls," "High Fidelity" and "Price of Glory") hit theaters, threatening not only to knock "Erin Brockovich" and "Romeo Must Die" out of the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, but also to squeeze several flicks that have been losing steam out of the Top 10 for good.

Here's a look at the weekend's top players:

"The Road to El Dorado THE ROAD TO EL DORADO (See the trailer) The skinny: The biggest challenge to "Romeo" and Julia undoubtedly comes from this, the second ani
