HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 10, 2000 -- What a little war movie can do to a career. Colin Farrell, who got on the Hollywood radar with his performance in the war flick "Tigerland," has signed on to star in not one but two projects, Daily Variety says.

Farrell will first headline the drama "Phone Booth" for his "Tigerland" director, Joel Schumacher, in November. And then he'll segue to a courtroom drama flick, "Hart's War," where he'll play a POW who must defend a black soldier for murder.

The actor got the part in "War" after Edward Norton bailed on the project. The stellar cast for the film includes Bruce Willis and possibly Anthony Hopkins.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME: The Hollywood Reporter says that Dennis Quaid might star in the Disney flick "The Rookie." Based on a true story, the film is about a high school baseball coach (Quaid) who makes the major leagues at age 35.

Universal's "Meet the Parents" continued to meet box office success, becoming the year's third film to place first for three consecutive weeks.

The PG-13-rated comedy was still laughing all the way to the bank in its third weekend with an estimated $16.32 million (-23%) at 2,619 theaters (+4 theaters; $6,230 per theater). Its cume is approximately $81.0 million, heading for a domestic theatrical gross of $130 million or more.

"Parents'" international release is through DreamWorks Pictures, which co-financed the film and will share equally in its success.

"Parents" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend.

"Being number one for the third week in a row is extraordinary," Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said Sunday morning. "It's only been twice this year that that's happened. The last time was with 'E

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 21, 2000 -- The 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards is shaping up to be one heck of a testosterone-charged run.

Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic" and Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" have emerged as the frontrunners in this year's race for the Globes, each receiving five nods apiece as nominations for the annual bash were announced this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in Beverly Hills, Calif..

Trailing closely behind are Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical rock flick "Almost Famous," "Chocolat," "Wonder Boys" and Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," each earning four nominations.

Soderbergh's drug trafficking drama (which has yet to bow in theaters) picked up almost all the prized loot with a nod for best picture (drama), best director, best screenplay for scribe Stephen Gaghan and a best supporting actor and actress (drama) mention for Benecio D

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 29, 2000 -- They were hits on the big screen and now they’re even bigger hits on DVD.

“Gladiator” and “X-Men” each took in $60 million in DVD sales and VHS rentals over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The estimates for “X-Men's” home video and DVD sales even surpassed the film’s opening weekend domestic gross of $57.5 million over the summer. The summer hit features an ensemble cast including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Anna Paquin.

“Gladiator’s” numbers, however, were most impressive considering the film, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix and Connie Nielsen, isn’t available to purchase in the VHS format -– a format that most home movie watchers use.

Currently in the United States, there are about 9 million DVD players compare

CBS won the first week of the May sweeps, powered by its hit reality show Survivor II: The Australian Outback and its coupled drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The two shows scored second- and third-place finishes respectively, behind an episode of NBC's E.R., which saw the return of Sally Field. CBS averaged an 8.4 household rating for the week with a 14 share. NBC, no longer feeling the drag of ratings for its XFL football telecasts, was close behind with an 8.2/14. ABC, which placed two editions of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in the top ten, was third with a 7.1/12, followed by Fox with a 5.7/10. Meanwhile, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw set a modern record by maintaining the lead among network newscasts for 52 consecutive weeks.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30, 2001 -- Nominations for the 7th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today in Los Angeles at L.A.'s Pacific Design Center.

The unique show, honoring performers from 13 movie and TV categories, will air on TNT, Sunday, March 11 from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

The nominations in the movie categories aren’t surprising, with frontrunners Russell Crowe’s from “Gladiator” and Golden Globe winner Julia Roberts from “Erin Brockovich” easily making the list. Golden Globe winners Tom Hanks for “Cast Away” and Kate Hudson for “Almost Famous” snag nominations as well.

Several nominees in the television categories are returning to try their luck again, namely James Gandolfini and Edie Falco from “The Sopranos,” who both won in their respective categories last year. Also, die-hard dramas, such as “ER” and “Law & Order,” are back fo

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 21, 2001 -- One thing remains clear after tonight's 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards: There was a definite lack of a dominant film on the block. Though certain sure bets did come out victorious, no single film was able to sweep the Globes, leaving the upcoming Oscar race as wide open as it was before.

Heavy contenders "Traffic," "Almost Famous," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Gladiator" all took home two Globes apiece at the annual star-studded event.

As expected, Julia Roberts won the award for best actress in a movie (drama) for her work in "Erin Brockovich". However, she was visibly surprised when "Brockovich" director Steven Soderbergh went home empty-handed.

"I was shocked, actually," Roberts said backstage. "I suppose when I presented the best director and Steven [Soderbergh] didn't win for either film ["Traffic" and "Erin

HOLLYWOOD, Oct 26, 2000 - Look for "Blair Witch 2" to do killer business this Halloween weekend.

Artisan Entertainment's R-rated sequel "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2," opening at about 3,000 theaters, should scare up enough ticket sales to end "Meet the Parents'" three week reign in first place.

"'Blair Witch' is going to play very young," explains an insider. "They ought to be able to open to $20 million." The original "Blair Witch Project," last summer's sleeper blockbuster, was made independently for about $35,000 and picked up by Artisan. It grossed about $140.5 million in domestic theaters.

Directed by Joe Berlinger, "Blair Witch 2" stars Kim Director, Jeffrey Donovan, Erica Leerhsen, Tristen Skylar and Stephen Barker-Turner.

Moviegoers don't seem bedazzled by "Bedazzled" and probably won't pay enough for "Pay It Forward" to finish first. That should mean a third consecutive chart-topping weekend for "Meet the Parents."

The PG-13-rated comedy from Universal finished first last weekend with $21.2 million. It actually held even better than its modest 26% decline suggests. Its drop was measured against the previous Sunday, which was a stronger than normal Sunday since the next day was Columbus Day.

"The way that picture's holding up, if it drops another 25% -- and it may actually hold better than that -- it will still do $15 million," an insider speculates. "There won't be anything else that can do $15 million."

"Parents'" strength has been its appeal to a broad audience of younger Ben Stiller fans and older Robert De Niro fans.

Tyler began her career as a model and quickly evolved to the big screen just films such as "Armageddon," "Stealing Beauty" and "One Night at McCool's."

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 4, 2001 -- Director Robert Altman will be bringing his signature brand of filmmaking to Britain, and the country's top-notch actors are apparently the first to rejoice.

Jude Law ("The Talented Mr. Ripley"), Emily Watson ("Breaking the Waves") and Kristin Scott Thomas ("The English Patient") are among the ensemble cast that have signed on to Altman's "Gosford Park," Daily Variety reports.

And Helen Mirren ("The Passion of Ayn Rand") and Michael Gambon ("Sleepy Hollow") might also join a cast that could amount to 20 people.

"Lots of actors want to be in the film, but it is a question of fitting it into their schedules," Altman's spokesman said.

In typical Altman-esque narrative style, the film is said to be about the relations among different social classes in 1930s Britain.
