John Leguizamo, who plays Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rogue, to W Magazine about receiving inspiration from Sister Wendy, the British nun whose televised lectures on art have become a cult hit:
``I happened to be watching a lot of Sister Wendy right before filming, and I thought, `She has a lisp like he did, and she appreciates art like he did.' So she was my way into the character. And all through the shoot, Baz kept saying, `John, more Sister Wendy! Find her effervescence!''

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 28, 2000 -- The last time an epic fantasy miniseries came along, it was NBC's exercise in stamina "The 10th Kingdom." We suggested then that you wait until the next sweeps period for impresario Robert Halmi Sr.'s more promising "Arabian Nights" (8-10 p.m., tonight, and 9-11 p.m., Monday, ABC). Well, the sweeps are here again, and "Arabian Nights" has been worth the wait. Filmed in exotic Turkish and Moroccan locations, it features very cool and moody visual effects, and most importantly, a great story, er, stories, as "The Thousand and One Nights" of Middle-Eastern folklore has provided some of the most bulletproof material in entertainment for about 1,000 years now. The cast is strong and looks like they were having a lot of fun throughout, with Jason Scott Lee ("Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story") as Aladdin and John Leguizamo as the genie. "Arabian Nights" also

LOS ANGELES, April 14, 2000 - Who are Gary Walkow, Seth Zvi Rosenfeld, and Adrienne Shelly? They are among some of the unknown to little-known to cult-known filmmakers hoping to get noticed, publicize their low-budget films, and in some cases, find distributors, at the 6th Annual Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, which kicked off Thursday night at a low-watt event here at the Director's Guild of America.
Through Tuesday, 35 feature films and 45 shorts will be screened at the fest -- with the majority of the works directed, produced and starring mainstream unknowns.
The caliber of these upstarts notwithstanding, the LAIFF also will feature films featuring (relatively) more recognizable names. For instance: hip-hop impresarios Black Thought, DJ Cut Chemist and Mos Def in the music documentary "Freestyle;" John Leguizamo, Rosie Perez and Marisa Tomei in "King of the Ju

HOLLYWOOD, June 15, 2000 -- Last weekend, it was a gang of car thieves who raked in the box office bonanza with "Gone in 60 Seconds," but now a badass cop-turned-private eye is here to run the bad guys outta town in "Shaft."
The reinvented 1970s black superstud, as portrayed by "Samuel L. Jackson, is this weekend's heaviest hitter, while Fox's animated sci-fi flick "Titan A.E." and the teen romance "Boys and Girls" starring "Freddie Prinze Jr. also wade into the increasingly crowded summer box office waters.
Meanwhile, Disney is expanding its "Fantasia 2000" onto 1,300 screens nationwide, to offer something else for parents who've already taken their kids to see "Dinosaur" 10 times.
Here's a brief rundown of this weekend's new entries:
