You'd think the cast of the West Wing would rejoice after Thursday's Emmy nominations presentation--as the show was given the best drama nod, yet again. Instead, actors Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford and John Spencer have surprisingly entered into intense contract negotiations with Warner Bros. and John Wells Productions to have their salaries pushed up to the level of costars Martin Sheen and Rob Lowe, Variety reports.

The current president of the Writers Guild of America, ER and West Wing producer John Wells, has announced he will not seek re-election in September. Likewise, the WGA's current vice president, Dan Petrie Jr.--who himself once held the position of president--will give up his post alongside Wells. Victoria Riskin and Michael Mahern are running for the presidency, according to the WGA's Web site. Riskin, a member of the WGA's board of directors, would become the WGA's first female president in 60 years if elected. There are 16 candidates running for the board of directors' eight open seats, including Polly Platt and Gregory Widen. The elections will be held Sept. 20.

Just one day after ABC announced its surprising fall 2001 lineup, CBS followed suit Wednesday with some curveballs of its own.

The Eye Network will bring back 16 primetime programs, CBS President Les Moonves announced Wednesday - including Survivor, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Everybody Loves Raymond and Judging Amy - and also will introduce eight new series starring some of Hollywood's heavyweights.

Survivor and CSI will remain Thursday's double-threat, and the Monday lineup of strong sitcoms, including King of Queens, Yes, Dear, Raymond and Becker, also will stay untouched.

New blood, however, will shake up CBS' remaining primetime schedule.

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 5, 2001 -- Can't we all just get along? Looks like we can.

In a last-ditch attempt to save the entertainment industry from a devastating strike, The Writers Guild of America has agreed to stretch their film and TV contract negotiations to today. WGA's generous gesture contradicts its original two-week deadline, but this sudden move is a promising sign that both sides are close to a settlement.

Negotiators have agreed to talk today, but no deadline has been set for this new round of discussion. When the bargaining began on January 22, the WGA issued a two-week deadline on talks. If there was no resolution within that time, WGA members vowed to pull the plug on further negotiation until a month before their contract expires on May 2. Moments after the meetings began at WGA headquarters, Writers Guild of America West president John Wells revised the terms by im

Negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers resumed at 10 a.m. PST Friday with the possibility that both parties will sign off on a new three-year contract. According to the Los Angeles Times, sources close to the talks have said that the two sides were nearly finished drafting the contract language and fine-tuning the deal points.

The talks have been characterized as extremely intense and exhaustive. There have been late-night negotiations, with the parties talking for 17 hours on Tuesday and for 14 hours on Wednesday. The existing contract expired 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

Negotiators recessed Thursday around 5:30 p.m. instead of dragging on into the night, a further indication that most of the hard work has been finished. Still, throughout Thursday's session, the situation was reported to be continually up and down, with talks possibly unraveling at any moment over the money issues.

So far, so good.

As the negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers went on through the early morning hours Wednesday, extending beyond the WGA contract expiration deadline, both factions agreed to resume the talks later today.
