'Twas the weekend before Christmas, and all through the movie house, all the kids were eager, to see the talking mouse.
As usual, movie attendance was soft during the final holiday shopping weekend of the year. The box office was dominated by two rodents: one of them the little talking mouse who stars in Columbia Pictures' G-rated "Stuart Little," the other, the ubiquitous Disney mouse, which had three films in the weekend's top five.
In its opening weekend, "Stuart Little," an adaptation of the popular, half-century-old book by E.B. White featuring the voice of Michael J. Fox as the titular creature, grossed an estimated $15.4 million in 2,878 theaters, and it had the highest per-theater average of any movie in wide release at $5,351. Although a $15 million gross won't set any records, studio officials are pleased that the film opened strong during the pre-Christmas wee

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30, 2001 -- Nominations for the 7th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today in Los Angeles at L.A.'s Pacific Design Center.
The unique show, honoring performers from 13 movie and TV categories, will air on TNT, Sunday, March 11 from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.
The nominations in the movie categories aren’t surprising, with frontrunners Russell Crowe’s from “Gladiator” and Golden Globe winner Julia Roberts from “Erin Brockovich” easily making the list. Golden Globe winners Tom Hanks for “Cast Away” and Kate Hudson for “Almost Famous” snag nominations as well.
Several nominees in the television categories are returning to try their luck again, namely James Gandolfini and Edie Falco from “The Sopranos,” who both won in their respective categories last year. Also, die-hard dramas, such as “ER” and “Law & Order,” are back fo

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 21, 2001 -- One thing remains clear after tonight's 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards: There was a definite lack of a dominant film on the block. Though certain sure bets did come out victorious, no single film was able to sweep the Globes, leaving the upcoming Oscar race as wide open as it was before.
Heavy contenders "Traffic," "Almost Famous," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Gladiator" all took home two Globes apiece at the annual star-studded event.
As expected, Julia Roberts won the award for best actress in a movie (drama) for her work in "Erin Brockovich". However, she was visibly surprised when "Brockovich" director Steven Soderbergh went home empty-handed.
"I was shocked, actually," Roberts said backstage. "I suppose when I presented the best director and Steven [Soderbergh] didn't win for either film ["Traffic" and "Erin

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 8, 2000 -- TV's "Frasier" is talking big.
Or rather, Paramount Television Group, the producer of the titular hit NBC sitcom, is.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Paramount Television is asking the Peacock Network to pay $8 million per episode for Kelsey Grammer's series in contract renewal talks. But the problem is that NBC is standing firm on its existing pay rate, which amounts to about $5 million per show.
According to the report, if the stalemate persists, Paramount can shop the series to other networks after March 1, when its exclusive negotiating period with NBC ends.
NBC currently pays $6 million in license fees for "Friends," the highest ever for a half-hour comedy.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 1, 2000 - This one just gets weirder and weirder. Now in its 27th year, the People's Choice Awards have announced their nominees and the results are even more worth a recount than that mess in Florida.
Culled by a nationwide Gallup poll of 213 million Americans, according to Reuters reports, the voters picked "The Patriot," "Remember the Titans" and "The Green Mile" as best film nominees. But the problem is, "The Green Mile," starring Tom Hanks, was released last year. Hmmm.
The award show, which honors those in film, music and TV, will pay tribute to favorites like Mel Gibson, Britney Spears and, um, Alabama.
On the TV front, Michael Richards ("The Michael Richards Show") and John Goodman ("Normal, Ohio") are each nominated in the favorite male performer in a new TV series category along with "Ed's" Tom Cavanagh -- despite the fact that these sho

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 9, 2000 -- A judge's ruling might cost "Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer $2 million.
The TV celebrity was ordered to pay $2,034,391 in commissions he owes Artists Agency. The agency says Grammer stopped paying commissions after he left for another agency in 1998, commissions which stemmed from getting the actor his gig on the hit NBC show "Frasier."
Grammer, however, says that the agency didn't earn those commissions and that he no longer needed to pay since he severed his longtime relationship with the agency. But U.S. District Court Judge Dean D. Pregerson thought otherwise and ordered Grammer and his Gramnet Inc. to pay up. By law, Grammer has the right to appeal the ruling.
The judge also ordered Grammer's former agent, William Morris Agency, to cough up $82,554 to Artists Agency as well. The William Morris Agency got pulled into the suit over comm

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 2, 2000 -- If you're tired of hearing Oprah Winfrey talk and want her to stop, you'll have to wait until 2004.
The daytime TV talk show host of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" has signed a new deal that will keep her on the air through the 2004 season. Winfrey had been discreet over the past year, never really fessing up to whether she was going to renew her contract, until now.
The deal between her Harpo productions and Viacom Inc.' King World Prods. also includes a partnership to develop other syndication TV programming.

HOLLYWOOD, May 23, 2000 -- Last week in TV ratings land, NBC threw in the kitchen sink with three hours of "Must-See" season finales and owned the top of the Top 10. Unfortunately, there are still seven days in a week, and NBC has just one sink. Thus, ABC, still running on high-octane Regis fuel, held on to win the overall week -- again.
Here now, for your edification and amusement, the annotated primetime Top 10 rankings for the week of May 15-21, according to the good people at Nielsen Media Research. (Each rating point is worth a little more than 1 million viewers.)

HOLLYWOOD, May 14, 2000 -- Sometimes all these special events during sweeps months just get in the way. They drive a wedge between you, the viewer, and your favorite shows. And if there were no season finale cliffhangers … Well, we'd rather not even think about a world that bleak. SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 24, 2000 -- You ever think of Kelsey Grammer as a movie star? Kelsey Grammer No? Well, that's too bad, because Kelsey Grammer thinks of Kelsey Grammer as a movie star. At least he thinks he could be a movie star if it weren't for that darn hit NBC series of his.
In the upcoming issue of Smoke magazine, the "Frasier" stalwart talks about the "bugaboo of being Frasier."
"For a creative industry, it's certainly a world full of people with no creativity. They often do not have a vision beyond what they know," Grammer tells the mag.
While Grammer says he hopes he'll be given the opportunity to play other characters (presumably on the big screen), we, his public, can content ourselves in the meantime by reviewing his previous cinematic works.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 31, 2000 -- The two faces of Don Corleone may be reunited in the upcoming crime drama "The Score." Daily Variety reports that Marlon Brando is in negotiations to co-star alongside Robert De Niro in the Frank Oz-helmed project. Also starring in the film is Edward Norton ("American History X").
Brando and De Niro last appeared in the same movie as the younger and older faces of Corleone in "The Godfather: Part II." Their collaboration on "The Score" marks the first time they will appear together in the same scenes.
The story involves a young con played by Norton who seeks out De Niro's veteran thieving skills to pull off one last heist. Brando will play De Niro's fence. Shooting on the Mandalay/Paramount project is set to begin in late April in Montreal.

Hollywood is expecting Warner Bros. and Castle Rock Entertainment's opening of "The Green Mile" to walk off with the most box office green this weekend.
The R-rated drama, written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tom Hanks, kicks off at more than 2,850 theaters.
"'Toy Story [2],' if it's down in the neighborhood of 35-40%, is $16-18 million. And I think 'Green Mile' beats that based on the tracking. They're sitting there with an 18% first choice right now," one studio executive said earlier this week."
"It is high," he said of the tracking results. "Although I understand the reviews are not very good, with Tom Hanks (starring), that's $20 million-plus."
While a $20 million-plus opening is certainly very attractive, it's not spectacular. One of the factors working against a bigger first weekend for the adult appeal "Green" is that adults are bu

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 30, 2000 -- The Super Bowl sacked Hollywood over the weekend with a gross of only about $6.2 million being enough to grab first place.
There was a close race for top honors among Destination Films' opening of its thriller "Eye Of the Beholder," Universal's Oscar contender "The Hurricane" and New Line's urban-appeal comedy sequel "Next Friday." As always, Monday's actual numbers could reverse today's estimated results.
Although Destination's "Eye" appeared to have the weekend's best score with about $6.2 million, it was not an impressive one.
"There was no No. 1 film in 1999 lower than $9 million," one studio distribution president said Sunday morning, looking back at the record books. "That was 'The Best Man' (the weekend of) Oct. 22-24, 1999, with $9.03 million. In 1998, the lowest-grossing No. 1 film was 'He Got Game' (the weekend of)
