JOHN GIELGUD: 1904-2000 John Gielgud HOLLYWOOD, May 22, 2000 -- Distinguished veteran British actor John Gielgud, who won a 1981 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing proper butler to a sauced millionaire in the Dudley Moore comedy "Arthur," has died, his family said today. He was 96.
Gielgud died at his London-area home. The cause of death was not disclosed, but he was, like we said, 96. A theater legend, his TV and film career boasted 130 credits, including stops in: Laurence Olivier's "Hamlet" (1948), Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet" (1996) and "Arthur 2: On the Rocks" (1988).
As an aside to "Star Wars" fans, Gielgud is not to be confused for (although he frequently was) fellow distinguished veteran British actor Alec (Obi-Wan) Guinness, who is 86, and still alive.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 26, 2000 -- Every few years or so, there comes a film that seeks to capture the spirit of a lost generation.
John Cusack And every few years or so, John Cusack seems to come out of relative seclusion to star in it.
So the tradition continues this week with "High Fidelity" (opening wide, Friday), yet another serving of offbeat meandering through the mindset of the thirtysomething. Based on the novel of the same name by Nick Hornby, the flick revolves around the existential crisis of a record store manager (Cusack) who's struggling with the thinning appeal of slackerdom and the loss of his girlfriend (played by Joelle Hjejle).
Co-scripted by Cusack and the "Grosse Pointe Blank" writing team of D.V. DeVincentis and Steve Pink, the film features one awesome supporting cast, including Lili Taylor, Sara Gilbert, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tim

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 14, 2000 -- From psychotically funny to just plain psycho?
That seems to be the trajectory for Robin Williams. The Hollywood Reporter says today that the career funnyman has been cast against type as a pathologically obsessive man in the thriller "One Hour Photo."
Written and directed by music video veteran Mark Romanek (whose directorial resume includes music videos for Madonna’s "Rain" and Beck’s "Devil’s Haircut"), the flick is scheduled to begin production in the fall.
’DRAGON’ LADY: Daily Variety columnist Michael Fleming reports that Bridget Fonda has landed the female lead opposite Jet Li in "Kiss of the Dragon." The film will be directed by "The Fifth Element" and "Joan of Arc" helmer Luc Besson.
DOUBLE ‘CONSPIRACY’: Thesps Kenneth Branagh and Stanley Tucci will star in the HBO film "Conspiracy," the Reporter says. The flick chroni

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 30, 2000 -- Jim Carrey redeemed? The "Me, Myself & Irene" star is looking to play the lead in the romantic comedy "Bijou," Daily Variety reports.
Directed by Frank Darabont ("The Green Mile"), it's about a young amnesiac who is mistaken for the estranged son of a local movie theater owner. Whatever that means.

NO MORE BARD: The Shakespearean-minded Kenneth Branagh will star in the low-budget "Rabbit-Proof Fence," The Hollywood Reporter says. The historical drama follows three aboriginal girls who escaped from Australian authorities after being taken from their families in 1931.

"Gone In 60 Seconds" should have no trouble finding first place parking this weekend.
With a first-choice tracking of 27%, the PG-13-rated action thriller from Buena Vista/Touchstone is on track to steal $30-35 million at 3,006 theaters. Insiders point out that if it opens as well as "The Rock" - $25.1 million at 2,392 theaters June 7-9, 1996 ($10,481 per theater) - it would gross $31.5 million.
Who most wants to go to "Gone?" "It's very much young male," an insider says of the film's appeal. "The overall definite interest is 55%, but for young males (under 25) it's 69% and it's 46% for older men (over 25). It's 57% for young women and 48% for older women."
Look for "Gone" to drive Paramount's "Mission: Impossible-2" down one ramp to second place in its third week. The PG-13 blockbuster action adventure sequel's 19% first-choice tracking suggests "M:I-2"

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 30, 2000 -- As the box-office turns: Can an aging slacker suffering a romantic crisis, the second-string heartthrob from "Dawson's Creek," and yet another "animated epic" join forces to end Queen Julia Roberts' reign atop the box-office heap? Then again, will Jet Li karate-kick all of their butts?
This weekend, four major new movies ("The Road to El Dorado," "The Skulls," "High Fidelity" and "Price of Glory") hit theaters, threatening not only to knock "Erin Brockovich" and "Romeo Must Die" out of the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, but also to squeeze several flicks that have been losing steam out of the Top 10 for good.
Here's a look at the weekend's top players:
"The Road to El Dorado THE ROAD TO EL DORADO (See the trailer) The skinny: The biggest challenge to "Romeo" and Julia undoubtedly comes from this, the second ani

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 14, 2000 -- Hollywood types hope their best work will be remembered when that other awards show announces its nominees Tuesday. But unfortunately, their worst work won't be forgotten either, not if the Golden Raspberry Awards Foundation has anything to say about it.
At least "Wild Wild West" knows it won't walk away honor-less. Last summer's Will Smith stinker, along with the blockbuster "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace", topped the nominations for the 20th Annual Razzie Awards, announced today.
"Wild Wild West" and "Phantom Menace" are up for eight Razzies each. The digs at "West" include nods for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Kevin Kline), Worst Screen Couple (Kline and Smith), Worst Director (Barry Sonnenfeld), Worst Supporting Actor (Kenneth Branagh) and two nods for Worst Supporting Actress (Salma Hayek and Kline as a prostitute)

"Shaft" was the man this weekend, easily stealing first place at the box office from "Gone in 60 Seconds."
Paramount's R-rated urban appeal remake kicked off to a muscular ESTIMATED $21.1 million at 2,337 theaters ($9,029 per theater).
"Shaft's" per-theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release this weekend.
"It's great. It's a good opening," Paramount distribution president Wayne Lewellen said Sunday morning.
"We're very pleased with it, obviously. Early on, we thought it would be $18-22 million, so it fell right in the range that we were looking at, and it's a little bit on the high side of it."
Asked who the film's audience was, Lewellen noted, "I haven't seen the exit polls yet. I think it must have played young, at least that's what our research told us up front. Young males are the primary audience. The p
