HOLLYWOOD, Calif., May 11, 2000 – There's really nothing new about another mob movie from Martin Scorsese, is there? How about this: It co-stars Daniel Day-Lewis. Word comes today, via Daily Variety, that the elusive actor, whose last film work was four years ago in "The Boxer," has joined the cast of Scorsese's forthcoming "Gangs of New York," which stars Leonardo Dicaprio. Day-Lewis will play the villain, Bill the Butcher, who tries to thwart gangster Leo's effort to unite the scrappy street gangs in late 19th-century Gotham.
Day-Lewis, of course, won an Oscar for "My Left Foot," and he was in Scorsese's "The Age of Innocence." But no one seems to know for sure what he's been doing for the past few years, or exactly how Scorsese lured him back into the fold.
Maybe it was the free trip to Rome, where "Gangs of New York" begins filming in August.
Here's a roundup

SANTA MONICA, CALIF., Feb. 6, 2000 -- A call to teen-age girls and middle-age men -- Leonardo DiCaprio and Annabel Chong are coming to theaters this week.

For viewers whose tastes run more toward family fare, there are the releases of Disney's "The Tigger Movie" and Paramount's "Snow Day." Here's a list of films opening this coming week:

LEOFEST TO LAUNCH: It's not just Santa who will be arriving any day soon. Leonardo DiCaprio will be delivering the official version of his LeoFest International Online Short Film Festival to the Web right after the New Year/new millennium celebration (a work-in-progress site is up now).
LeoFest is calling for anyone, anywhere (Tonga! Iceland! Wichita! You name it!) to submit for consideration a film of up to 15 minutes in any of the following categories: narrative, documentary, animation and alternative. Filmmakers will have to make transfers before they submit since LeoFest says that no film stock of any gauge will be accepted (Take that, Eastman Kodak!).
While prizes haven't yet been announced, we've heard that Leo himself will be awarding grand prizes of $20,000 to all finalists, and it's money right out of his own pocket. And we bet that the talent scouts at Leo's all

HOLLYWOOD, May 9, 2000 -- One minute you're a nondescript nobody; the minute after that, you're the next Anakin Skywalker. And the minute after that one, you're Topic No. 1 for geekazoid fan boys everywhere. Hayden Christensen -- the same nobody who last week was rumored to be George Lucas' pick to play the pubescent Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode II" -- is indeed going to do just that, according to the whole wide world with the exception of, hmmm, Lucasfilm and the actor's reps.
Despite all the official hush-hush, the Christensen appointment is viewed as a done deal. And obsessive-compulsive Jedi fans are furiously typing out their reactions on various Hayden Christensen and "Star Wars"-related Internet news groups and Web sites. Here's a sampling of what they're saying:
The supportive: "Hayden is in final negotiations to play Anakin Skywalker in the next 'St

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 14, 2000 -- If you want to see a film both Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire starred in together four years ago, you’ll have to travel to Berlin to see it.
The actors both appeared in “Don’s Plum” before they became household names in America. Now the film, by first-time director R.D. Robb, will be screened at the Berlin Film Festival (Feb. 7-18).
But don’t expect to ever see it in the United States. The two stars took the filmmakers to court, saying that they never agreed to appear in the film with the intent of a theatrical release.
Under a settlement, the filmmakers agreed not to sell or release the picture in the United States or Canada. The film is a raw improvisational picture centering on group of 20-somethings hanging out in an L.A. diner.
