NEW YORK, NY, June 5, 2000 -- No one knows this yet but there's a new musical that will land on Broadway very soon and it will be a huge, huge hit.
How can we be so sure? Yes, the spankin' new musical comedy version of the smash indie "The Full Monty" opened last Thursday at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre to great reviews, including one in Monday's Variety, but this column has always been a little, uh, skeptical of critics.
But one of the theater world's most seasoned professionals (now a major force on the West Coast after having cut his teeth in New York for years) caught a preview early last week and declared "The Full Monty" an "unequivocal smash" and "howlingly commercial."
Yes, playwright Terrence McNally ("The Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Master Class," "Love! Valour! Compassion!") uncharacteristically breaks no new ground here, but he and novice musical comedy

NEW YORK, NY, June 12, 2000 -- How do you sell a really big summer movie if all the good guys, including your major stars, die at the end? (At least Kate Winslet's Rose Dewitt Bukater, if not poor Leo, survived the "Titanic" !)
When the film is Warner Bros.' "The Perfect Storm," which opens later this month, stars George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg have to take a back seat to the movie's real star – the storm itself.
At least that's how Warner Bros.' marketing campaign has lined up its ducks. In the print ads, trailers, TV ads, Web and radio promotions, it's the storm, storm, storm (and loud she is!) they're pushing. There's barely a glimpse of George and Mark, who were seen together last year in "Three Kings."
This marketing manoeuvering for "The Perfect Storm" was surely tricky, especially since the huge marquee value of Clooney and Wahlberg had to be devalued. The

"Three Kings," David O. Russell's Gulf War actioner, was named Best Picture by the Boston Film Critics Association today.
The film, which also won Russell a Best Director award, follows American soldiers who find a map in the desert leading to an arsenal of stolen gold bullion. As they hunt for the treasure, the trio encounter atrocities of war and face moral dilemmas.
Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube, "Three Kings" grossed about $58 million at the box office and was earlier named one of the National Board of Review's top 10 of the year. It's the second year in a row Clooney has starred in the association's top picture; the 1998 Best Picture was Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight," co-starring Jennifer Lopez.

Universal's "Meet the Parents" continued to meet box office success, becoming the year's third film to place first for three consecutive weeks.
The PG-13-rated comedy was still laughing all the way to the bank in its third weekend with an estimated $16.32 million (-23%) at 2,619 theaters (+4 theaters; $6,230 per theater). Its cume is approximately $81.0 million, heading for a domestic theatrical gross of $130 million or more.
"Parents'" international release is through DreamWorks Pictures, which co-financed the film and will share equally in its success.
"Parents" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend.

Two months before the release of Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston, members of the heavy metal band Judas Priest are distancing themselves from the film.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 12, 2001 -- Taiwanese helmer Ang Lee has tamed both the dragon and the tiger, and now he's thinking of doing the same to the Hulk.
The "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon director is in early talks to direct "Hulk" for Universal Pictures, Daily Variety says.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct 26, 2000 - Look for "Blair Witch 2" to do killer business this Halloween weekend.
Artisan Entertainment's R-rated sequel "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2," opening at about 3,000 theaters, should scare up enough ticket sales to end "Meet the Parents'" three week reign in first place.
"'Blair Witch' is going to play very young," explains an insider. "They ought to be able to open to $20 million." The original "Blair Witch Project," last summer's sleeper blockbuster, was made independently for about $35,000 and picked up by Artisan. It grossed about $140.5 million in domestic theaters.

Moviegoers don't seem bedazzled by "Bedazzled" and probably won't pay enough for "Pay It Forward" to finish first. That should mean a third consecutive chart-topping weekend for "Meet the Parents."
The PG-13-rated comedy from Universal finished first last weekend with $21.2 million. It actually held even better than its modest 26% decline suggests. Its drop was measured against the previous Sunday, which was a stronger than normal Sunday since the next day was Columbus Day.
"The way that picture's holding up, if it drops another 25% -- and it may actually hold better than that -- it will still do $15 million," an insider speculates. "There won't be anything else that can do $15 million."
"Parents'" strength has been its appeal to a broad audience of younger Ben Stiller fans and older Robert De Niro fans.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 5, 2000 -- Mark Wahlberg is landing huge film roles left and right, but he hasn’t become too big for his britches to remember his past glory as a barely clad rapper.
Now Wahlberg is mulling over a possible return to the music world, thanks to his latest movie role.
Wahlberg portrays a heavy metal singer in "Metal Gods," and the role made him think about returning to the days when he was hitting the music charts as Marky Mark of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.
"I miss the freedom of being a musician. You show up when you want, go on when you want, but movies give me the discipline I needed," Wahlberg has said. "If I don't have to be a judge on karaoke shows on MTV, then I might go back to music."

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 11, 2000 -- The big, bad and seemingly unavoidable Screen Actors Guild strike is still almost a year away, but the studios and filmmakers in Tinseltown are already scrambling to get their stars under contract, shoot their films and fold their tents before picketing begins next summer.
According to today's Hollywood Reporter, several big productions are scrambling to get under way, including Steven Soderbergh's star-studded remake of "Ocean's Eleven," and Russell Crowe's recent shoulder injury probably means that Jodie Foster's next directorial effort will get shelved.
In the case of "Ocean's," the trade says, it appears that stars George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt (who, ostensibly, would take roles originally done by Frank Sinatra, Angie Dickinson and Dean Martin) are locked in, but Mark Wahlberg may have to duck out because of a conflict with t

HOLLYWOOD, July 9, 2000 –- Loud and clear, the people have spoken: They love poop.
It was indeed scary that "Scary Movie" was the nation’s choice in fine film entertainment this weekend. And what’s scarier -– it was by no small margin.
In an opening weekend that would make Jim Carrey green with envy ( "Me, Myself & Irene" only took in about $24 mil when it bowed), the Wayans brothers’ latest envelope-pushing spoof simply blew all contenders and poseurs away by raking in a jaw-dropping $42.5 mil in total sales, per estimates released today.
"Scary Movie's" opening was the second biggest of the year, behind "M:I-2's" $57.9 million in May. Critics mostly praised the film, which offers full-frontal male nudity, raunchy dialogue (about poop) and chronic drug use.

HOLLYWOOD, July 6, 2000 -- Is the "Lethal Weapon" guy not so lethal anymore?
Or, are American moviegoers (shame on us!) more interested in big disasters and special effects than in Hollywood's rendition of the Revolutionary War?
These questions and others loom large in the wake of the Fourth of July box office returns, which saw the holiday weekend's big favorite, "The Patriot," washed away by "The Perfect Storm," the film that most observers thought would finish at No. 2.
How, for example, could Mel Gibson's stars-and-stripes action flick, tailor-made for an Independence Day release, make about half as much money as a film about foolhardy fishermen who sail right into the eye of a gigantic hurricane? (In case you hadn't heard, "The Perfect Storm" reaped $62.7 million over the five-day weekend, while "The Patriot" made $35.2 mil.)

HOLLYWOOD, June 29, 2000 -- Mel Gibson's been a post-apocalyptic anti-hero, a half-cocked cop and a rich guy at war with kidnappers. But can he beat the redcoats? Can he beat George Clooney?
It's a historic showdown of sorts at the box office this weekend. Gibson's "The Patriot" and Clooney's "The Perfect Storm" are the first two films with $100 million budgets, gigantic marketing campaigns and big buzz to face off over a summer holiday (namely, July 4 or Memorial Day).
Already, "The Patriot" has the competitive edge. The Revolutionary War action flick opened Wednesday and scored $5 million. But that doesn't guarantee a hit -- last summer, "Wild Wild West" opened on a Wednesday too, with a nice $7 mil, and we know what happened to that one.
Oh, and let's not forget the cute lil' animated moose and squirrel in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle," who also figu

HOLLYWOOD, June 2, 2000 -- Now we don't know how George Clooney will stack up against the hep-cat cool of Frank Sinatra, but one thing seems to be certain: That planned "Ocean's 11" remake is shaping up to be quite an affair. Or is it?
If the casting reports in the Hollywood trades (and other sources) are to believed, the Steven Soderbergh-helmed remake -- based on the 1960 Rat Pack-packed caper flick about a group of 11 old war buddies bent on knocking over a bunch of Vegas casinos on New Year's Eve -- has done nothing short of locking up an A list dream cast. The much-ignored fact remains that only Clooney -- who's signed on to star as ringleader Danny Ocean (a role previously played by Sinatra) -- is committed to the project.

Winona Ryder, Matt Damon SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 25, 2000 -- Looks like spring fever has hit Hollywood -- or newsrooms. One thing's for sure -- lots of buzz about celebrity couplings/uncouplings going on. From today's New York Daily News comes reputed word that Matt Damon, 29, and Winona Ryder, 28, have split after two years of significant-other status. These two have been rumored to be on the outs before -- just last week a supermarket tab said that Ryder had been taken in by the abs of Mark Wahlberg. But the Daily News has a twist -- it says Damon is the one who's been roving, being taken in by "All the Pretty Horses" co-star Penelope Cruz, 25.
A rep for Ryder couldn't be reached for comment; a rep for Damon told the paper that the actor and Cruz were "just friends."
"All the Pretty Horses" is a Western due out this summer. It's directed by Billy Bob Thornton

Daily Variety reports that the actress is in negotiations to co-star in the Warner Bros. pic "Sweet November." That would mean that her heart's no longer set on producer Jerry Bruckheimer's "Pearl Harbor." That Michael Bay-helmed actioner is to be filmed over a five-month period.
As for "Sweet November," "Circle of Friends" filmmaker Pat O'Connor is set to direct the tale of a businessman (Reeves) who falls in love with a cancer-riddled woman (Theron).

Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" and George Clooney's "The Perfect Storm" should spark big box office fireworks this weekend.

After its $5 million start, it could wind up with a first place finish of $30 million or more for three days (Friday-Sunday) and $40 million or more for five days (Wednesday-Sunday).

HOLLYWOOD, June 28, 2000 -- So, if you can't get Matt Damon for your movie, what's a studio to do? Get the guy who kinda looks like Matt Damon. SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 2, 2000 -- "Storm" clouds unexpectedly dominated the July Fourth weekend box office skies, raining on what was expected to be Mel Gibson's parade.
Nonetheless, there was plenty of room in the holiday marketplace for both Warner Bros.' "The Perfect Storm" and Columbia and Centropolis Entertainment's "The Patriot" to do blockbuster business. Despite expectations based on tracking scores that "Patriot" would capture the top spot, it was "Storm" that won the battle with an estimated $41.68 million at 3,407 theaters ($12,234 per theater). Its cume for the five days ending with July Fourth should be about $63 million.
