Matthew Broderick, to The Associated Press, on hosting Sunday's annual Tony Awards with The Producers costar Nathan Lane:

"They basically said we want you to do it and if you don't want to, you have to call Mel (Brooks, The Producers creator) and Stro (director Susan Stroman). It would have been fairly dramatic to say, 'No.' Nathan has been writing our material and we will look at it together. Hopefully, it will end up reasonably bearable

"The co-hosting part made it a little less daunting. We are going to introduce the show and wave good-bye. We're not going to do a lot of running-the-thing-along stuff."

Wall Street showed little reaction Monday to the settlement reached on Friday between the Writers Guild of America and the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the Los Angeles Times observed Monday. Noting that if a strike had materialized, most TV and film studios would have been able to lower their production costs, Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen told the newspaper, "If there had been a strike, it would have been a short-term positive for some of the companies." Nevertheless, UBS Warburg analyst Christopher Dixon noted that investors were able to breathe "a great sigh of relief" when the agreement was announced. Referring to the potential of an actors' strike, Dixon added, "We still don't know whether we'll have actors, but we do have scripts that will be written, and that's a first step."

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 27, 2000 -- Hollywood expects to be thrown for a loss on the box office gridiron this Super Bowl weekend.

Neither of the weekend's two new wide releases is tracking well, according to distribution insiders.

"'Eye Of the Beholder' is 3% first choice, 'Isn't She Great' is 2% first choice," one studio executive said, referring to mid-week tracking data. "I really liked the trailer for ('Great'), but I guess it doesn't matter. It has zero unaided awareness. Nobody cares."

"Great," opening via Universal at about 750 theaters, is an R-rated drama about the life of best-selling author Jacqueline Susann. Directed by Andrew Bergman, it stars Bette Midler and Nathan Lane.

"Beholder," opening via Destination Films at 1,672 theaters, is an R-rated thriller written and directed by Stephan Elliott and stars Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd. Its

LOS ANGELES -- "Stuart Little" made its grand debut at the Village Theatre in Westwood on Dec. 5.

Academy Award winner Geena Davis, Jonathan Lipnicki ("Jerry Maguire"), Nathan Lane ("The Birdcage") and others strolled down the red carpet in honor of "Stuart Little" while benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

"It's a terrific event for us," said John Calley, the event chairman for the diabetes foundation. "It helps us in two important ways: One, of course, is the awareness of diabetes and the other is that it's a substantial amount of money being raised for diabetes today."

Director Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King") brings the comedic adventure of a little mouse searching for a real home to the big screen. The film is based on the classic book by E.B. White.

"It's about someone (Stuart Little) who is different and searching for a family," said Lane. "I p

Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" and George Clooney's "The Perfect Storm" should spark big box office fireworks this weekend.

"Patriot," the R-rated period piece drama from Columbia Pictures and Centropolis Entertainment, marched into 3,061 theaters Wednesday. It grossed an encouraging estimated $5.0 million ($1,633 per theater) in its first skirmishes with moviegoers.

"Patriot's" overall first-choice tracking of 26% has most insiders predicting it will win the five-day battle that ends with the Fourth of July holiday. After its $5 million start, it could wind up with a first place finish of $30 million or more for three days (Friday-Sunday) and $40 million or more for five days (Wednesday-Sunday).

"If you extrapolate from other performances on this kind of holiday, it could very well get to $30 million," a studio source explains. "It's a 2 hour 40 minute

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 30, 2000 -- The Super Bowl sacked Hollywood over the weekend with a gross of only about $6.2 million being enough to grab first place.

There was a close race for top honors among Destination Films' opening of its thriller "Eye Of the Beholder," Universal's Oscar contender "The Hurricane" and New Line's urban-appeal comedy sequel "Next Friday." As always, Monday's actual numbers could reverse today's estimated results.

Although Destination's "Eye" appeared to have the weekend's best score with about $6.2 million, it was not an impressive one.

"There was no No. 1 film in 1999 lower than $9 million," one studio distribution president said Sunday morning, looking back at the record books. "That was 'The Best Man' (the weekend of) Oct. 22-24, 1999, with $9.03 million. In 1998, the lowest-grossing No. 1 film was 'He Got Game' (the weekend of)

This weekend also saw the arrival of Sony Pictures Classics' R-rated comedy thriller "Trixie" at 7 theaters in New York and Los Angeles. No data was available to use in estimating its gross.

Written and directed by Alan Rudolph, it stars Emily Watson, Dermot Mulroney, Nick Nolte, Nathan Lane, Brittany Murphy, Lesley Ann Warren and Will Patton.

SNEAK PREVIEWS Buena Vista/Disney held sneak previews Sunday of its PG-rated comedy "Disney's The Kid."

Directed by Jon Turtletaub, it stars Bruce Willis.

EXPANSIONS There was no activity on the expansion front this weekend.

WEEKEND COMPARISONS Key films -- those grossing more than $500,000 for the weekend -- took in approximately $124.79 million for three days. Valid comparisons to the comparable weekend last year aren't really possible because July Fourth fell on a Sunday last year and was part of a four-da

HOLLYWOOD, June 15, 2000 -- Last weekend, it was a gang of car thieves who raked in the box office bonanza with "Gone in 60 Seconds," but now a badass cop-turned-private eye is here to run the bad guys outta town in "Shaft."

The reinvented 1970s black superstud, as portrayed by "Samuel L. Jackson, is this weekend's heaviest hitter, while Fox's animated sci-fi flick "Titan A.E." and the teen romance "Boys and Girls" starring "Freddie Prinze Jr. also wade into the increasingly crowded summer box office waters.

Meanwhile, Disney is expanding its "Fantasia 2000" onto 1,300 screens nationwide, to offer something else for parents who've already taken their kids to see "Dinosaur" 10 times.

Here's a brief rundown of this weekend's new entries:

Negotiators for TV and film writers and their producer employers resumed talks at noon Wednesday amid speculation that they had already reached a broad agreement on money issues and were now in intense talks concerning "creative rights" issues. Thursday's New York Times quoted one industry exec who attended a 4:00 p.m. session as saying, "If we can resolve the creative rights, then it's a run for the roses."
