It may not have had the No. 1 film at the box office over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but Buena Vista is on the right track to reach an even more prestigious achievement.

The studio is set to break the $1 billion mark in domestic box office sales for the third year in a row and its sixth time in the past seven years, The Hollywood Reporter says.

The release of “Unbreakable” and “102 Dalmatians” over the holiday weekend brought in a total $72.2 million, pushing the studio’s domestic box office receipts to $964 million. Only three other studios have passed the $1 billion mark: Sony, Paramount and Warner Bros., except that they’ve only reached that mark only once.

"We set $1 billion as our goal," Buena Vista Pictures Distribution President Chuck Viane told the Reporter. "To be able to deliver on that goal is a tribute to the consiste

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21, 1999 — Gotham City, it seems, still needs a hero. Ben Affleck, currently seen in "Dogma" and the upcoming "Boiler Room," is the latest name to be linked with the "Batman" movies.

According to gossip columnist Liz Smith, Affleck is a "major contender" to play the Caped Crusader in Warner Bros.' latest "Batman" film. The franchise bottomed out in 1997 when Joel Schumacher's "Batman and Robin" earned a (relatively) disappointing $107.3 million at the box office. Batstar George Clooney joked that he may have killed the series.

But au contraire: Warner Bros. is reportedly considering two concepts for the latest sequel: One based on the animated WB show "Batman Beyond," in which an older Bruce Wayne passes his Batsuit to a teen-ager, and another based on the comic miniseries "Batman Year One," which traced Wayne's initial transformation into the

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 14, 2000 -- If you want to see a film both Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire starred in together four years ago, you’ll have to travel to Berlin to see it.

The actors both appeared in “Don’s Plum” before they became household names in America. Now the film, by first-time director R.D. Robb, will be screened at the Berlin Film Festival (Feb. 7-18).

But don’t expect to ever see it in the United States. The two stars took the filmmakers to court, saying that they never agreed to appear in the film with the intent of a theatrical release.

Under a settlement, the filmmakers agreed not to sell or release the picture in the United States or Canada. The film is a raw improvisational picture centering on group of 20-somethings hanging out in an L.A. diner.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 19, 2000 -- It's official: The strange and twisting marriage of Hollywood couple Nicolas Cage and Patricia Arquette is ending.

The couple, who wed in April 1995, separated for a second time Nov. 1, Arquette's petition said.

While the two have appeared together in public during their marriage, Cage revealed in his divorce petition that they have actually lived apart since nine months after their wedding.

Publicists for both actors say the decision to divorce is mutual and amicable.

Cage, an Oscar winner for 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas," was last seen on the big screen in "Gone in 60 Seconds." Arquette, the sister of actors David Arquette and Rosanna Arq

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 5, 2000 -- Most of the country will have to wait 21 more days to see “Thirteen Days.”

New Line Cinema has pushed back the wide release of Kevin Costner’s historical drama by nearly a month to avoid the high-profile competition it would have gone up against on its original launch date, Dec. 22.

"Days" will now be released on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, Jan. 12, Variety reports. The film will instead get a limited release Dec. 22 in New York and Los Angeles for Oscar consideration.

The Cuban Missile Crisis thriller still faces tough competition on Jan. 12 by films such as “Traffic” with Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, “Finding Forrester” with Sean Connery, “Antitrust” with Ryan Phillippe and Tim Robbins, Disney’s action comedy “Double Take” with Orlando Jones, and “O Brother, Where Art Though?” starring George Clooney.

"Based on what 'What Women Want' did last week (opening to $33.6 million), 'Cast Away' could open to $30 million-plus for four days. They'll be number one."

"A lot of business is going to happen over the four days," predicts another studio source. "I assume 'Cast Away' is going to be number one. I think it's going to do around $35 million."

"The Grinch" continued making a mountain of money, easily holding on to first place for a fourth straight weekend.

Universal and Imagine Entertainment's PG-rated blockbuster comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" topped the chart in its fourth week with a still magical estimated $18.46 million (-32%) at 3,186 theaters (+48 theaters; $5,795 per theater). Its cume is approximately $195.5 million, heading for $250 million-plus.

"It's exhilarating to have 'Grinch' the Number One film four weekends in a row; and as we move closer to the actual holiday season, having this film achieve the $200 million mark prior to that is most gratifying for Universal and Imagine Entertainment," Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said Sunday morning.

These days, it seems that secretaries are receiving producer credits, and it's making the Producers Guild of America hopping mad. The guild is hoping to use the recent writers' talks-during which writers' and directors' credits on a film were a hot-button issue--as a springboard to finally clear up what it means to be a producer, and what it takes to get a producer's credit.

Managers, financiers, partners and the occasional hairdresser all seem to find their way onto film credits these days as producers.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 2, 2001 -- There's no casting audiences away from the multiplexes this weekend.

In the New Year's holiday weekend that saw no new wide releases, Tom Hanks' "Survivor"-esque epic "Cast Away" held on to the top spot at the box office this weekend as expected with an estimated $31.1 million, hurling the film over the $100 million mark in only its second week of release, according to estimates from box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.

Coming in second for a second consecutive weekend is the sensitive male comedy "What Women Want" with $22.6 million. The Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt starrer has thus far grossed more than $110 million.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 26, 2000 -- There was no saving Private Gibson at the box office over the Christmas holiday weekend as Tom Hanks' new film "Cast Away" cast a spell on moviegoers.

The Robert Zemeckis film, featuring Hanks as a Federal Express employee who gets stranded on a deserted island, took in an estimated $40.5 million over the long holiday weekend, according to studio estimates Monday.

"Cast Away" dethroned one-week champ "What Women Want" starring Mel Gibson. "Women" took in $21.5 million, bringing its two-week total to $70.1 million.

Things are certainly looking up in December after Mel Gibson's $34 million-plus record-setting opening last weekend at the box office for "What Women Want."

And judging from the big names, business is only going to be better this weekend as heavily anticipated films such as Tom Hanks' "Cast Away" and Nicolas Cage's "Family Man" bow nationwide today.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 21, 2000 -- Just like his monotoned android promised nine years ago in "Terminator 2," Arnold Schwarzenegger -- as we know it -- is back.

But the big question after all these years is: Does anyone still care?

Case in point: "The 6th Day."

Opening last weekend, the sci-fi actioner took in an estimated $13.2 million over the three-day period. While the actioner had the disadvantage of opening up against the season's most anticipated fare, "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas", the fact of the matter is that for an Ah-nuld picture, it is -- after all things considered -- still somewhat disappointing.

"A Schwarzenegger film nowadays is no longer an event. Thirteen million is a disappointing opening for a Schwarzenegger film. He was averaging beforehand $20 million-plus openings," Brandon Gray, editor of boxofficemojo.com, told Hollywood.c

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 18, 2000 -- Elizabeth Hurley's bedeviled character may have charmed Brendan Fraser in "Bedazzled," but the supermodel turned actress's smiles couldn't win over the striking SAG actors who protested at the film's premiere Tuesday night in the Westwood section of Los Angeles. Carrying posters saying "Go Home Scab" and "Elizabeth, You Make Me Hurl," the members marched in a line in front of the Mann Village Theatre's red carpet before celebrities arrived and continued to press forward with jeers and whistle-blowing when limousines pulled up.

When Hurley finally appeared, the noise grew deafening, and publicists held up umbrellas and movie posters to shield the mob from the actress.

Hurley, for her part, refused to let the mayhem rain on her parade. She answered reporters' questions with candor and even cracked a joke or two about her newly single status.

EW Online is reporting today that Darren Aronofsky, who has been rumored to inherit the Batman franchise's directorial duties, recently met with Pitt. However, it's unclear whether Aronofsky wants Pitt to play Batman or ... Chuck Barris.

Yes, that's Chuck Barris of "The Gong Show" fame.

See, Aronofsky is not only talking to Warners about "Batman 5" but also about taking over the reins of the Barris biopic "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," which has a screenplay written by Charlie Kaufman of "Being John Malkovich" fame.
