HOLLYWOOD, May 14, 2000 – The Roman spectacle that is an embattled Russell Crowe in a thigh-length skirt asserted its supremacy over other spectacles at the box office once again this weekend.

For the second time in as many weeks, the loincloth-filled "Gladiator" put its competition to shame, pulling in an estimated $24.3 million, according to box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Inc.

Taking the No. 2 slot was the John Travolta sci-fi bonanza "Battlefield Earth" with an estimated $12.3 million -- almost 50 percent less than the Russell Crowe starrer.

The rest of the Top Five couldn't even ring up double digits as far as the million-dollar mark goes. The submarine WWII actioner " "U-571," with $5.8 million, dropped another spot from last week to No. 3. The ballet teen flick " "Center Stage" debuted at No. 4 with $4.8 million, finishing in a tie with the lin

"Gladiator" continued to rule the box office this weekend, collecting another $24 million in tribute from moviegoers.

The R-rated action adventure from DreamWorks easily held on to first place in its second week with a hefty ESTIMATED $24.3 million (-30%) at 2,943 theaters (+40 theaters; $8,257 per theater). Its cume is approximately $73.3 million, heading for about $150 million in domestic theaters.

"Gladiator's" per theater average was the highest for any film playing in wide release this weekend.

"Obviously, it's a strong hold," DreamWorks distribution head Jim Tharp said Sunday morning. "The positive word-of-mouth continues to be very strong."

Although DreamWorks is distributing "Gladiator" domestically, Universal is releasing it internationally. The two studios are 50-50 partners, sharing equally in its success. The film reportedly cost $1

HOLLYWOOD, May 11, 2000 - It's time to separate the men from the boys, and by all accounts, "Gladiator" is going to do the separating. The Roman action epic, which opened last weekend at No. 1 and, as of Tuesday, had pulled in a tidy $42 million, should have little trouble defending its box-office supremacy this weekend, what with "Battlefield Earth" -- a baggage-carrying sci-fi vanity project from John Travolta -- mounting the most formidable challenge (such as it is).

Meanwhile, there are four other new films arriving at cinemas this weekend ("Center Stage," "Screwed," "Hamlet," and "Held Up"), but none aspires to blockbuster credentials.

Here's a rundown of the new releases:

DreamWorks' "Gladiator" should be victorious again on the box office battlefield this weekend.

With "Gladiator" still commanding a 30% first-choice tracking score among opening and released movies, there's little doubt the R-rated action adventure will keep a tight grip on the top spot.

If "Gladiator" slips 36% from its $34.8 million opening, its second weekend tribute will still be a handsome sum of about $22 million.

DreamWorks is distributing "Gladiator" domestically, while Universal is releasing it internationally. The two studios co-financed the film, which reportedly cost $103 million to make, and are 50-50 partners, sharing equally in its success.

Directed by Ridley Scott, it stars Russell Crowe.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 31, 2000 -- The two faces of Don Corleone may be reunited in the upcoming crime drama "The Score." Daily Variety reports that Marlon Brando is in negotiations to co-star alongside Robert De Niro in the Frank Oz-helmed project. Also starring in the film is Edward Norton ("American History X").

Brando and De Niro last appeared in the same movie as the younger and older faces of Corleone in "The Godfather: Part II." Their collaboration on "The Score" marks the first time they will appear together in the same scenes.

The story involves a young con played by Norton who seeks out De Niro's veteran thieving skills to pull off one last heist. Brando will play De Niro's fence. Shooting on the Mandalay/Paramount project is set to begin in late April in Montreal.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2000 -- Milestone haircuts worked for Mia Farrow (see: "Rosemary's Baby") and Gwyneth Paltrow (see: "Sliding Doors"). But chopping off one's long locks did nothing for Keri Russell, star of the WB's "Felicity."

In fact, according to a network exec, the cut hurt the fledgling series, which won raves -- and a Golden Globe for Russell - in its first season. WB entertainment chief Susanne Daniels told reporters Monday that the reaction to Russell's crop top was "so overwhelmingly negative" that it hurt the show, which arguably was already suffering from creative drought. But Daniels won't dismiss the hair's factor in the downtrend. And just to play it safe, she says, "Nobody is cutting their hair again."

The 23-year-old Russell reportedly got tired of the long, corkscrew mane that became synonymous with her identity (and that of her show's lead

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 17, 2000 -- Gone 'til March.

That's what it's looking like at CBS, where its franchise late-night show (name of, um, "Late Night") might be out of commission for up to 10 weeks while host David Letterman rehabs from emergency quintuple bypass surgery.

Starting tonight, the network will deploy repeats in place of all-new Dave.

All-new Dave last taped on Thursday. On that edition, Letterman revealed to guest Regis Philbin (as well as his TV audience) that he was about to undergo a heart test. The angiogram, performed Friday, turned into a bypass (also Friday) -- the result of severely blocked arteries.

Doctors say Letterman, 52, is "doing great" and could be home by the end of the week. As for Dave himself? He (and/or his writers) are already yukking it up.

"I feel fantastic," the comic said in a statement released Saturday
