SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 28, 1999 -- What do the Golden Globes know anyway? Last week, voters nominated John Williams' underwhelming "Angela's Ashes" at the expense of his more stirring work for "Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace." And what of Marc Shaiman's brilliant satire of the musical theater, in the form of "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut"? Snubbed.
Well, we're here to set things right.
Which soundtracks broke new ground, broke our hearts and broke down barriers with crossover potential? Read on for our list of the Top 20 soundtracks of 1999:
20. "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "More Music from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "Pokémon: The First Movie" – No, we weren't very impressed with the contents of these best-selling albums, just the marketing savvy behind them.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 11, 2001 -- If anything, it won't be a total and complete shutout for "Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
Or will it?
The Jim Carrey blockbuster is among the seven films being considered for this year's Visual Effects Oscar, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday.
Going up against the Grinch himself will be "Cast Away," "Dinosaur," "Gladiator," "Hollow Man," "The Perfect Storm" and "X-Men."
After the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee have screened all the 15-minute clip reels from each of the seven films on Feb. 7, the group will nominate three of them for Oscar consideration, which will be announced with the rest of the nominees in the other 22 categories on Feb. 13 at 5:30 a.m. PT.

Annette Bening, Warren Beatty SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 26, 2000 - Ella Corinne. According to the Washington Post, that's the moniker Warren Beatty and Annette Bening have settled on for their newborn daughter, born earlier this month. The couple was tight-lipped about the child -- their fourth -- declining to give details as to where, when or how.
They did not (natch) divulge their baby-name pick. And they have not (natch) confirmed that Ella is it.
It sounds nice, though. At least the Travoltas think so. John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston named their new babe, born April 4, Ella, too.
GOODBYE, "DOLLY": The Broadway producer who empirically "presented" such Great White Way musicals such as "Hello, Dolly!," "42nd Street," "Oliver!" and dozens of others died Tuesday in London. David Merrick was 88.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 29, 2000 -- This week in the battle of the boybands, it was no contest: 'N Sync trounced Backstreet. According to just-released final stats, 'N Sync last week moved 2.4 million copies of its sophomore release, "No Strings Attached."
The mark shatters the previous weeklong standard (of 1.13 million CDs and such sold) established by the Backstreet Boys in 1999.
Says the president of 'N Sync's Jive Records label: "It's pretty staggering."
BAD NEWS FOR MATT DAMON FANS: The guy is not single. Publicists today for both the actor and Winona Ryder denied a report in the French magazine Voici that said the couple had split after two years of dating. The two are still a twosome, the reps said. So much for relying on your Hollywood news from French magazines.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 29, 2000 -- Whitney Houston played an imaginary piano, had trouble keeping her eyes open, bragged about how a "Jew guy" made her bracelet, and compared hanging with a junkie to hanging with a president during an interview for an upcoming magazine profile. Whitney Houston, left, with husband Bobby Brown The disclosures from Jane magazine come a day after the singer's camp tried to shoot down reports that she'd been canned from Sunday's Oscars telecast because she kept flubbing her routine in rehearsals. (According to Houston, she chose to sit out the show due to a sore throat.)
In the Jane interview, to be featured in the mag's May issue, Houston was asked by interviewer Tony Romando if she'd ever met a president or kicked back with a junkie.
"Sure," Houston reportedly said, adding that the junkie and the president are the same dudes.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 4, 2000 -- They might not win Oscars, but several singer/actors/divas are up for Grammys.
Nominations for the 42nd Grammy Awards, honoring the would-be best in music, were announced in Los Angeles today -- and the list of hopefuls reads like a who's-who in movieland, with Jennifer Lopez ("Out of Sight"), Courtney Love ("Man in the Moon") and Cher ("Tea With Mussolini") among those making the cut.
Here's a look at some of the key Grammy races involving Hollywood types:
'BELIEVE' IT OR NOT: That infectious dance song you heard all last year, Cher's "Believe," set the stage for the Oscar winner ("Moonstruck") to make her pop comeback. The Grammy people handed Cher three nominations, for Record of the Year, Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording. Rivaling her in the Dance Recording category is Jennifer Lopez. Lopez's nomination is for "Wait
