SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 5, 2000 -- American audiences agree: Nothing is more potent than the combo of greed and fame.

ABC's sign-of-the-time gameshow "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" clobbered its May sweeps competition with its just-concluded celebrity installments that ran nightly from Monday to Thursday. Wednesday's edition, in fact, gave the network its biggest audience for a nonsports show since 1983.

With the impressive results, word is that ABC's already planning to bring back the stars for another sweeps run in November.

"The ratings was great, the celebrities had a lot of fun, and it was for charity," ABC spokeswoman Mozell Miley told Hollywood.com today. "The idea [of an encore celeb week] has been considered, but it hasn't been confirmed."

Here's a final rundown of how this week's celebrity contestants did (all winnings went to the players' cha

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 17, 2000 -- Whether the Olympics or network television, it's a cutthroat world out there. This from ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" files: NBC and CBS are reportedly asking their network stars to not appear on special celebrity episodes of the Regis Philbin phenom, Daily Variety reports.

But viewers will be treated to 10 former U.S. Olympic athletes.

Last spring, funnyman Ray Romano from CBS' "Everybody Loves Raymond," "X-Files" G-man David Duchovny of Fox, and Vivica A. Fox from the CBS series "City of Angels" appeared on "Millionaire" alongside such notables as Lance Bass of 'N Sync and Queen Latifah to high ratings.

Variety reports that Martin Sheen of NBC's "The West Wing" and Conan O'Brien tentatively agreed to appear this time around but backed out after NBC officials suggested otherwise.

The scheduled TV celebrities so far are

HOLLYWOOD, March 2, 2001 - SNL front man Will Ferrell and "Sex in the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker doubled their fun when the 15th Annual American Comedy Awards nominations were announced yesterday. Each actor/funny person got two nominations.

Parker was nominated for funniest female performer in a TV series (leading role) for "Sex." She was also nominated for in the TV special category, for her hosting of the "2000 MTV Movie Awards." Parker received a Golden Globe earlier this year.

Ferrell, whose impersonations of President Bush on SNL are hugely popular, got his two noms in the funniest male performer in a TV special and funniest supporting male performer in a TV series categories.

Competing against Parker for funniest female performer in a TV series (leading role) are Debra Messing for "Will & Grace" and Jane Kaczmarek for "Malcolm in the Middle."

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 25, 2001 -- The readers of TV Guide magazine chose their favorites in television when the TV Guide Awards were handed out Saturday in a ceremony that paired standard award-show fare with participation from the viewing audience. (Don't worry -- you haven't missed it. The show doesn't air until March 7.)

The winners announced on Saturday were selected by the magazine's readership of some 34 million people, who either mailed in ballots or voted online. The winner of one category, favorite TV moment of the year, was not announced; instead, TV Guide readers and Web users will vote for the winner during the broadcast of the awards show on March 7 at 8pm EST on Fox.

For the top honors, readers picked "The West Wing" as best television drama and "Everybody Loves Raymond" as the best comedy show. Martin Sheen won the best actor in a drama for "The West Wing" and Am

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 21, 2001 - From sitcoms to cinema, the friendship between TV titans Ray Romano and Kevin James has held strong, and now the funnymen are bringing their talents to the movie world.

TV Guide has reported that Romano ("Everybody Loves Raymond") and James ("The King Of Queens") are gearing up for writer/director Jon Favreau's ("Swingers") new comedy, "Bridge and Tunnel." In the film, Romano will play a doctor in Queens who is recently separated from his wife, while James will play his personal trainer, who repeatedly tries to jolt the doctor from his depression.

Romano has described the film as a "sort of buddy picture -- a 'Swingers' for the thirtysomething/fortysomething crowd." Favreau, who the comedians contacted due to their love of "Swingers," says of the pair: "These two have a lot over most stand-ups that I've seen in film --- a lot of chemistry together

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 1, 2000 - This one just gets weirder and weirder. Now in its 27th year, the People's Choice Awards have announced their nominees and the results are even more worth a recount than that mess in Florida.

Culled by a nationwide Gallup poll of 213 million Americans, according to Reuters reports, the voters picked "The Patriot," "Remember the Titans" and "The Green Mile" as best film nominees. But the problem is, "The Green Mile," starring Tom Hanks, was released last year. Hmmm.

The award show, which honors those in film, music and TV, will pay tribute to favorites like Mel Gibson, Britney Spears and, um, Alabama.

On the TV front, Michael Richards ("The Michael Richards Show") and John Goodman ("Normal, Ohio") are each nominated in the favorite male performer in a new TV series category along with "Ed's" Tom Cavanagh -- despite the fact that these sho

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 24, 2000 -- Will Will Truman get lucky? Will Chandler and Monica tie the knot? Will Dawson and Pacey make up? And what's up with "Popular"?!

Those are some of the questions that have been posed and that will be answered during the fall season of television.

Herein is a critique of the fall seasons of 10 TV series that Hollywood.com staffers watch on a weekly basis:

"Will & Grace," NBC, Thursdays, 9 p.m. ET

Is "Will & Grace," the as-of-late-sometimes-hilarious sitcom about a gay man named Will Truman (Eric McCormack, who looks tan and really sexy this season), his best gay friend Jack McFarland (the always funny, over the top Emmy winner Sean Hayes), his best female friend Grace Adler (Debra Messing), and her lush of a socialite "employee" Karen Walker (Emmy winner Megan Mullally), falling from, er, grace this season? "Will & Grace" sadly ha

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 11, 2000 -- It was a golden evening for the Screen Actors Guild on Emmy night. Celebrities such as Emmy winner Jack Lemmon (for “Oprah Winfrey Presents: Tuesdays With Morrie”) along with John Lithgow, David Schwimmer and James Cromwell arrived at the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards red carpet pre-show Sunday night at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium donning gold ribbons in support of the SAG strike.

SAG had requested that its members and others wear the ribbons in support of the long-running strike in response to actions to end royalty payments for commercials.

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series winner Linwood Boomer (“Malcolm in the Middle”) was the only Emmy winner to speak about the SAG strike during the telecast. Boomer concluded his acceptance speech by saying,” I left my yellow [sic] ribbon at home, but I love you guys. Don’t give up.”

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 10, 2000 -- Leave it to the insurance types with their legal babble to ruin everything -- and that's including "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

Reports today say that Buena Vista Entertainment, the ABC/Disney production wing behind the champion game show, has been taken to the British High Court of Justice by its London-based insurers. Why? The smarty-pants types at the insurance firm of Goshawk Syndicate feel that the quiz-show's questions have just gotten too bloody easy. So easy that, the Goshawk folks fear, the show will be minting too many millionaires -- a scenario equivalent to a depthless money pit for an insurer.

Simply put, the Goshawk camp wants out of its contract with ABC -- and nothing short of a ruling by the crown is going to stop the company from getting it.

Here's the breakdown of the financial implications for Goshawk if

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- The infectious bug that has been plaguing TV series of late -- you know, the "I feel that my time with the show is up and I've decided to move on" epidemic -- has claimed another victim.

The latest casualty is none other than "Veronica's Closet's" Kathy Najimy. Trade papers report today that the actress, who plays Olive, Veronica's (Kirstie Alley) trusted sidekick and confidant, will bid farewell to the NBC comedy at the end of this season.

Najimy tells Variety that her decision to leave the show is based purely on personal reasons. With "Veronica's Closet" behind, Najimy reportedly plans to spend more time with her 3-year-old daughter, not to mention more of the same said time on a would-be "feature career."

Of course, the concept of "leaving" "Veronica's Closet" might become a moot point. The unbeloved comed
