A host of mid-level blockbusters and some serious classic films highlight the DVD release schedule for the week of Dec. 7.

Heading things up is Warner Bros.' special edition of the Renny Harlin-directed action feature "Deep Blue Sea" ($24.98 SRP). A sort of 1999 version of "Jaws," "Deep Blue Sea" features a group of scientists attempting to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease by experimenting on sharks. As the sea creatures are altered with enlarged brains, they begin to get uppity, and chaos ensues. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Saffron Burrows and Thomas Jane. Warner's special edition includes a running commentary, behind-the-scenes documentaries and detailed storyboards and stills.

As expected, Disney has re-released its Academy Award-winning "Shakespeare in Love" ($39.99 SRP), this time in a deluxe, special edition. The Best Picture recipient at last year's Oscar

Moviegoers celebrated "Mummy's" Day this weekend with a record setting $70 million opening. Universal's PG-13 rated adventure sequel "The Mummy Returns" kicked off Hollywood's pre-summer season with a staggering ESTIMATED $70.11 million at 3,104 theaters ($20,615 per theater). "Mummy" accounted for about 65% of the weekend's total key films gross of $107.5 million. "Mummy" is well on its way to what looks like it could be a $200 million gross in domestic theaters. That would be about $45 million more than the first "Mummy" did domestically in 1999.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30, 2001 -- Another supermodel is turning Hollywood on its ear, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer couldn’t be happier.

“Sports Illustrated” model and professional synchronized swimmer Estella Warren is racking up film projects, and her latest role will be taking her Down Under. Warren will join Jerry O’Connell (“Sliders”) and Anthony Anderson (“Me, Myself and Irene”) in producer Bruckheimer’s new action-comedy “Down and Under.”

In the film, two long-time friends, a New York hairstylist (O’Connell) and an unsuccessful musician (Anderson) are forced to work for the Mafia, and are sent to Australia to deliver $100,000. However, a wild kangaroo accidentally takes the money, and the pair is forced to pursue the critter.

Warren will play a wildlife researcher who helps the duo with her kangaroo knowledge, and serve as O’Connell’s love interest. The movie wi

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 10, 2000 -- The crime spree is over. "The Sopranos" will have to kiss someone else's ring -- namely, the big boss man's, the president of the United States of TV America.

"The West Wing" was named Best Drama Series at the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards, capping a night wherein the political drama dominated, save for one major setback when James Gandolfini of "The Sopranos" bested Martin Sheen in the competition for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

"I think the Academy has an affinity for slightly overweight bald men," Gandolfini quipped onstage.

Gandolfini's win was the lone bright spot for "The Sopranos," which otherwise got whacked -- like when Sela Ward of ABC’s "Once and Again" beat both Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco for the Best Actress in a Drama Series Emmy. "The Sopranos" came into the night with 18 nominations.

HOLLYWOOD, June 15, 2000 -- The world may be safe yet for another "Saturday Night Live" knock-off flick. Word today is that Mike Myers is being lured back to the botched "Dieter" project by promises of a better script (not to mention an assist from peacemaker Steven Spielberg).

Myers walked on the film last month and was subsequently sued by Universal Pictures last week.

"Dieter" is based on Myers' old "SNL" sketch "Sprockets."

Jim Carrey HANG UP: Jim Carrey is out of Joel Schumacher's would-be gritty "Phone Booth." Carrey is the second star to bail, after Will Smith.

FIFTEEN MINUTES STILL COUNTING ...: Fox-rejected Jennifer Love Hewitt will costar with Sigourney Weaver and Gene Hackman in "The Breakers," about a wacky mom (Weaver) and daughter (Hewitt) who con residents of a Florida resort.

CLASH OF THE TITANS: Burt Reynolds and Sylvester St

HOLLYWOOD, May 25, 2000 -- Is Matt Damon ready to go undercover? (Or to take Brad Pitt's leftovers?) Today's Daily Variety says "The Talented Mr. Ripley" star has been offered the lead in the spy thriller, "The Bourne Identity," based on the Robert Ludlum novel of the same name. Pitt passed on the project on Wednesday.

WHAT A GREAT IDEA! Martin Lawrence, late of "Big Momma's House," is eyeing "Black Knight," a comedy about a lowly food-service worker who time travels back to the Middle Ages. We do not think Variety is making this up.

MONKEY SHINES: "High Fidelity" standout Jack Black is the latest actor to join Mike Myers' epic "Sprockets" comedy, about a man (Myers) and his quest for his missing monkey.

ON THE NOSE? "Cutthroat Island" great Renny Harlin is in talks to helm the Jackie Chan actioner, "Nosebleed," the Hollywood Reporter says. Shooting is planned f
