July 1 marks the halfway point of the movie year, and there is a clear winner among the major Hollywood studios. With the top 3 grossing movies of 2008, Paramount is riding high with both Marvel’s Iron Man and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull topping $300M and DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda at $181M now and a cinch for $200M+. The Melrose gang will be the first studio in history with back-to-back-to-back $200M+ grossing movies.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 13, 2000 -- "Meet the Parents" and "Remember the Titans" took the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, last week. And guess what, the smart bets are that they’ll remain in those positions again this week.

"’Meet the Parents’ and 'Remember the Titans' are going to be the top two films again," Brandon Gray of boxofficemojo.com told Hollywood.com. "’Meet’ had a stunning opening. Even if it takes a hit, it is still going to make a sizable amount. The film has the momentum right now, and it’s clearly the top movie."

As for "Remember the Titans," Gray predicts that it’ll stick to the runner-up slot again this week for the simple fact that it is a crowd-pleasing film, meaning that it makes people feel all warm and fuzzy.

But if you’ve already seen the above two films, there are other choices out there.

Here’s a glimpse at the films opening this w

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 14, 2000 -- So, today's Valentine's Day, and there are many reasons to be bitter. (Being single one great reason to be bitter).

So, it didn't help that Blockbuster, that rental behemoth, last week released its Top 10 list of the most romantic films of all-time. Of all-time? Oh, really.

Consider:

10. "The Wedding Singer" (1998) 9. "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997) 8. "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968) 7. "Jerry Maguire" (1996) 6. "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993) 5. "Chasing Amy" (1997) 4. "Sixteen Candles" (1984) 3. "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) 2. "Pretty Woman" (1990) 1. "As Good As It Gets" (1997)

So, OK, claws are out, and it's now open season.

How the heck does any movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore (Isn't her Gosh-I'm-So-Earnest-Act Old Yet? "Never Been Kissed" should've never been watched.) qualif

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 22, 2001 - Recent mom Cindy Crawford is rapidly adding to her budding family.

People magazine has reported that Crawford, 35, and her restaurateur husband, Rande Gerber, 38, are expecting another child, with a September due date expected. Crawford and Gerber are already the parents of a 20-month-old son, Presley Walker.

Crawford has made no secret of her desire for motherhood. During her marriage to actor Richard Gere, which ended in divorce in 1998, Crawford was quoted by People as saying: “More than anything, I want a family... I love kids and sort of feel that's the thing in my life I'm going to be best at, a mother.”

NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 4, 2000 --- Jodie Foster may be passing on "Hannibal," the grisly sequel to "The Silence of the Lambs," but she isn't quite abandoning oddball projects.

Come this spring, she'll be producing and directing "Flora Plum," a period film about a young waif (Claire Danes) who is adopted by a circus and befriended by a freak who falls for her while running her newfound showbiz career.

The movie is a return to the "freak" territory Foster roamed in so many of her films prior to this winter's regal "Anna and the King." Foster's pre-"Anna" "freaky" string of troubled characters and assorted weirdos dates back as far as 1972 and "Kansas City Bomber" (in which she played the daughter of a female roller-derby star).

The freaky Foster roster also includes: "Taxi Driver" (she's a kid hooker in a creepy nocturnal New York); "Nell" (she's a wolf-girl); "Carny"

HOLLYWOOD, June 6, 2000 -- So, did the hooker walk the steet again? Did the rich guy use a call-service again? Ah, the questions abound. And now, according to one report, they might be answered. A sequel to the 1990 comedy hit "Pretty Woman" -- the film that made Julia Roberts a star and made "King David" Richard Gere a reborn star -- is nearing reality, with a usable script completed and the original stars (and director Garry Marshall) circling, gossip maven Liz Smith says.

Fortunately for movie fans everywhere, Disney -- the studio behind the original film -- today told Hollywood.com that there is no script, no "Pretty Woman 2" on the boards there.

Roberts, Gere and Marshall last year teamed for the equally fluffy comedy hit "Runaway Bride."

HOLLYWOOD, May 26, 2000 - Hail to the pursuit of personal glory, individual fortunate and those precariously illusive (they hope) "other opportunities." The latest to enter the arena: Andy Richter, funny man-sidekick extraordinaire on the early a.m. talker "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" (12:35 a.m. EDT/PDT, NBC). Tonight, he departs the show after seven years.

Stand-up comic by trade, talk-show couchman by default, Richter made known his intentions to leave last August, citing his interests to act.

As of now, host Conan O'Brien has yet to express any intentions to fill the role left vacant by his erstwhile co-host. And as for Richter, his first post-"Late Night" gig will be in Robert Altman's upcoming flick "Dr. T & The Women," where he plays a friend to Richard Gere's character.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 8, 2000 -- How about this for a test of inner peace? A wailing newborn screaming in the middle of the night -- every night.

That's right. Looks like the road to nirvana for the Buddhist-minded Richard Gere will, for a little while at least, be one characterized primarily by dirty diapers, the above-mentioned nightly cacophony and a decided lack of quiescence.

Gere and actress Carey Lowell, the actor's on-again, off-again partner since 1995, welcomed the birth of their first child -- a baby boy -- Sunday night in New York.

The kid, given name Homer James Jigme Gere, weighed in at a healthy 8 pounds, 12 ounces. No word from either of the proud parents on the exact etymological inspiration for the kid's three-part name.

Gere is, of course, best known for the type of rough-trade hunkiness he embodies in such flicks as "American Gig

Gus Van Sant, the eclectic director of such films as To Die For and Finding Forrester, will reteam with his Good Will Hunting stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck (yes, Ben's little brother) for a new film, Jerry. According to the buzz at Cannes, the film is being kept closely under wraps, so there's not much known on the subject matter. Could be about a mouse or a TV evangelist or maybe a raunchy TV talk show host. What is known is that the project is being put together by the William Morris Agency Independent department, with co-heads Cassian Elwes and Rena Ronson negotiating the deal.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 15, 2000 -- Who knew a visit to future in-laws could be so funny ... and profitable. “Meet the Parents,” the comedy starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, held off “Remember the Titans” and four new movies to stay atop the box office heap, taking in an estimated $21.35 million in its second week, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations. The two-week total for “Parents” is $59 million.

“Titans” held on to the No. 2 spot with $13.58 million, taking its three-week total to $64.7 million. The high school football film starring Denzel Washington received the highest rating, an A+, by a CineScore poll for any film released this year.

Rounding out the Top Five were three debuts: the Winona Ryder starrer “Lost Souls” bowed in with $8.4 million, the “Saturday Night Live” skit turned feature film “The Ladies Man” starring Tim Meadows took in $5.7 million, a

Moviegoers and "Parents" should meet again in first place given the gloomy expectations for this weekend's new releases.

While most top level studio marketing and distribution executives were in Orlando this week for ShowEast, the annual convention of exhibitors and distributors, the handful of Hollywood handicappers left minding the store see the holdovers "Meet the Parents" and "Remember the Titans" as the films most likely to perform well.

Universal's PG-13-rated comedy "Meet the Parents," which opened to a sizzling $28.6 million last week, is a safe bet to hold on to the top spot. If it falls 25%, it will still do about $21.5 million. Even a 30% drop would give it a $20 million second weekend.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 19, 2000 -- Actor Richard Gere is not only getting religious but political as well.

The avowed Buddhist presented U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday with a copy of his 1997 coffee table book called "Pilgrim," a black and white photo documentary of the Tibetan people taken by Gere himself, Reuters reports.

The 52-year-old actor and star of this year's "Dr. T and the Women" has been a very vocal activist for the independence of Tibet, which has been under the sovereignty of China since 1951. The United Nations has largely ignored the plight of the Tibetan people.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 8, 2000 -- Carmen Electra might be eye candy to some, but the model-actress doesn’t like the way Candie’s Inc. has made her look.

The former “Baywatch” actress filed a lawsuit against the perfume and shoe company, saying that it used her name and image improperly on its Web site after a four-month ad campaign with her and ex-husband-basketball player Dennis Rodman, Reuters reports. The suit filed on Tuesday in federal court seeks unspecified damages.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 8, 2000 -- Has the Hollywood backlash begun for Robert Downey Jr.?

The Hollywood Reporter says today that the recently busted actor is in the process of being replaced in the star-studded film "America's Sweethearts."

Currently, Hank Azaria is in talks to take over Downey's lot among a cast which includes Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack.

Downey joined the Revolution Studios project in October, but his recent drug arrest in Palm Springs, Calif., and impending Dec. 27 court date in Indio have rendered him unavailable, to say the least.

Shooting for the film will begin in January and is expected to end in mid-March. 'POINT' BLANK: Tom Cruise and George Clooney thought about doing it, but Richard Gere is actually going to do it.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 15, 2000 -- Snoopy Dogg's in the movie house.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the gangsta rapper might join actors Omar Gooding and Taraji Henson and singer Tyrese in director John Singleton's new project "Baby Boy."

The film, written by Singleton, is about a young man (Tyrese) who fathers a child but refuses to accept the responsibility of adulthood. Gooding will play his older brother; Henson will play the character's girlfriend; and Snoop will play her ex-boyfriend.

GUY DOES 'TIME': The Reporter says that Guy Pearce, who you might or might not remember as a soldier in "Rules of Engagement," is in talks to star in the adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic "The Time Machine."

Pearce's previous film credits also include the Oscar-winning films "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and "L.A. Confidential."

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31, 2000 -- Actor/activist Richard Gere can add another award to his list of props. The veteran screen star received a humanitarian award on Sunday for his work on freeing Tibetans from Chinese rule.

Gere was among five recipients to be honored with the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal, The Associated Press reports.

"I feel very strongly here how her spirit ripples through us without even having seen her with our own eyes," Gere, a Buddhist, said at the Roosevelt's Hudson Valley Cottage during the award ceremony Sunday in Hyde Park, N.Y.

Also honored were Brazil's first lady, Ruth Cardoso; opera singer and activist Jessye Norman; and educator Emilie B. Dyson and her husband, Robert R. Dyson.

Gere's films include "An Officer and a Gentleman," "Pretty Woman" and "American Gigolo." He's currently starring in "Dr. T and the Women."

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 19, 2000 -- He once portrayed an Iggy Pop-inspired rocker in "Velvet Goldmine," and it looks like Ewan McGregor is about to do the same with British pop pioneer Billy Fury. No title has been attached to the project. Reuters said that McGregor's uncle, Dennis Lawson, who had a minor part in "Episode I," will also be in the film.

INFIDELITY LANE: Cheating on someone such as Richard Gere ain't easy, but someone's got to do it. Gere, known for his roles in "Pretty Woman," "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "American Gigolo," professed his admiration for Albright to Diane Sawyer on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"The first image that came was the secretary of state," Gere responded when asked on the morning talk show program which woman he would choose to be.
