HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 15, 2000 -- Radio broadcast pioneer Robert Trout died of heart failure Tuesday in a New York hospital. He was 91.
Trout was the first anchor of CBS Radio's "World News Tonight." Among the events he covered during his 70-year-long career were campaign speeches by Franklin D. Roosevelt and the repeal of Prohibition. He was known as the man who coined the term "fireside chat" for Roosevelt's radio addresses to the nation.
Trout retired in 1996 but continued as a part-time contributor to NPR's "All Things Considered."

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Dec. 6, 2000 -- Call it musical "Smackdown."
The 2000 Billboard Music Awards featured some of the rowdiest wrestling and name-calling not associated with the WWF. And that's just from the hosts.
Held Tuesday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and hosted by 'N Sync and actress Kathy Griffin, the telecast kicked off with the pep-rally cattle call "Who Let the Dogs Out" performed by the Baha Men and soon turned into an episodic comedy with some well-engineered face-offs.
Britney Spears charged the stage to rescue her boyfriend, 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake, from Griffin's clutches (Griffin's joke throughout the evening was deciding which member she would hook up with). To Timberlake's delight, the host and the pop princess wound up exchanging choice names such as "skank" and "bee-atch."

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 9, 2001 -- Country crossover sensation Faith Hill was the top winner at the 28th Annual American Music Awards on Monday night, walking away with three trophies but not before letting the audience in on her husband's dirty secret.
The singing beauty left an impression on the three-hour-long show with what perhaps was the strangest, or raunchiest, comment made during her acceptance speech for the Favorite Female Country Artist award.
"I was going to wear my husband's underwear, but it had a hole in it," Hill said while laughing and pointing to her husband, country singer Tim McGraw, who also took home an award in the Favorite Male Country Artist category.
Hill also won awards in the Country Album ("Breathe") and in the Female Pop/Rock Artist categories. In the pop/rock category, Hill beat out Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion.

HOLLYWOOD, May 12, 2000 -- Just so we're clear here, "Dirty Dancing" is not a 1980s relic, nor an embarrassing Patrick Swayze memory, nor a glorified B-picture with nice bodies. It is, rather, a "cultural touchstone." So said Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein in announcing to the world Thursday that his fine studio plans to team with Artisan Entertainment (i.e., the house that "The Blair Witch Project" built) to make "Dirty Dancing 2."
Just to keep things fun, Daily Variety says a wildly improbable pair -- try Ricky Martin and Natalie Portman -- are "in early talks" to do the flick.
The Miramax-Artisan "Dirty Dancing" alliance was said to have been cooked up over a lunch last December. No word on what the execs ate. Or drank.
The original "Dirty Dancing" (1987) starred Swayze, Jennifer Grey and Jennifer Grey's old nose.

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 20, 2001 - Latin pop star Ricky Martin is currently in talks to star in "The Assassination," which is being described as a political thriller, The New York Post reports. Martin will also sing the movie's theme song and contribute to the soundtrack.
Filmmaker George A. Romero will be directing "
The Assassination" for Los Angeles-based Highland Crest Pictures. The film centers on the 1961 assassination of Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo. If Martin's negotiations go as planned, he will play the role of Tavito del al Maza, a noted revolutionary.
A big-name cast, including Oscar nominee Ed Harris, Oscar winners James Coburn and Anthony Quinn and singer Ricky Martin, are in advanced negotiations to participate in the film. According to the Post, Martin's reps said there have been discussions but no commitment from him on the acting sid

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 14, 2001 -- Who knew that shaking your bon-bon could cause so much controversy?
Deeming it a "betrayal of everything that every Puerto Rican should stand for," producer-songwriter Robi Draco Rosa criticized on Friday longtime friend and collaborator Ricky Martin for agreeing to perform "La Copa de la Vida (The Cup of Life)" at inaugural festivities for President-elect George W. Bush.
Rosa, who penned "La Copa" as well as Martin's smash hit "Livin' La Vida Loca," says that he sees Martin's performance, scheduled for Thursday, as an inappropriate endorsement of Bush's Republican politics.
"This is a very partisan act," said Rosa, who was in the band Menudo with Martin. "This is a president who would have people in his Cabinet who would obstruct the exercise of civil rights, human rights, consumer rights, the right to choose, the right to be free of g

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 2, 2001 -- Remember last year's Grammys show?
Going in with a field best 10 nominations, Carlos Santana tied Michael Jackson’s record for the most wins in a single night, taking home eight statuettes.
Then there was the gossip-filled competition between Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Everybody was waiting with much anticipation to see which of the dueling teen divas would win the best new artist award. Aguilera won -- for at least that night.
And even though she didn't perform, there was Jennifer Lopez's green, barely there Versace dress. She … or her dress, rather … arguably overshadowed Santana.
So far, there isn’t any hot gossip brewing or a massive sweep of Santana-esque proportions for the 43rd annual Grammys in February. But there are a few players who you can bet have a good shot at a nod or two when the Recording Academy ann

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 19, 2000 -- Ricky Martin may soon be moving from the concert stage to the sound stage.
The bon-bon shaker has inked a deal with United Talent Agency to develop the singer’s TV and film career, Reuters reports.

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 1, 2000 - Was it a lighthearted spectacle or an award show? Thursday's inaugural My VH1 Music Awards was a little of both.
It really didn't matter, to some, who actually won as much as the hijinks that took place on stage at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Flea, walked onto the stage on his hands donning a punker T-shirt and later spit into the camera, Reuters reports.
When Latin pop star Ricky Martin wasn't available to accept an award, an actor with a huge pink foam buttocks over his head accepted it for him. And check out some of the categories: Booty Shake (Ricky Martin won, who else?), Most Entertaining Public Feud (Eminem won for his fallouts with his wife and mom), Your Song Kicked Ass But Played Too Damn Much (Santana for "Smooth"), Legend in Action (Sting) and Sexxxiest Video (Faith Hill for "Breathe").

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 22, 2000 -- The Queen of Music has spoken and laid to rest the rumors. Madonna confirmed today that she and British filmmaker Guy Ritchie plan to marry next year and settle down in London, where the U.S. pop star recently purchased a home for $10 million, Reuters reports.
The couple has a 4-month-old son, Rocco. Madonna was also quoted as saying in Britain's Sun tabloid that the couple are very much in love and that marriage was the next natural step to take in their relationship.
The singer also said that she and Ritchie prefer her children to be educated in England, which is also why they want to settle in London. Madonna has a 3-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 14, 2000 -- Could Ricky Martin and Marilyn Manson possibly have anything in common? Well, this week they do.
The two very different music artists have released their newest albums this week. Manson's "Holly Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)" is his follow-up to his 1998 platinum-selling metal fest "Mechanical Animal." The album, in a nutshell, describes how a rock star can be shot down by the pressures of, well, being a rock star, government, religion and, oh yes, greed.
Pop icon Martin on the other hand is inching closer to his Latin roots with the release of "Sound Loaded." But Martin fans need not worry. Like his debut single, "Livin' La Vida Loca," this Latin lover's new record still boasts the grooves that make Martin move so wildly on stage, as "She Bangs," his first single and video from the new album, proves.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 13, 2000 -- It's not enough that she's one half of country music's biggest couple or a Cover Girl model on the side.
But Faith Hill had to go and steal the thunder from the teenybopper world, grabbing a field-best four nominations for the 28th Annual American Music Awards, announced this morning at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., by executive producer Dick Clark and country group SHeDAISY.
Toppling double nominees 'N Sync and Britney Spears (who will serve as host of the awards show), Hill won her kudos by scoring crossover nods in the Pop/Rock, Country and Adult Contemporary fields. Rock group Creed and salsa king Marc Anthony tied at three nominations apiece by also being eligible in other categories.

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 2, 2000 -- Ricky Martin is still livin' la vida loca.
The Grammy-winning Latin heartthrob's new single "She Bangs" is on airwaves everywhere, and the video, featuring, of course, a very sexy Martin being groped repeatedly by numerous female admirers as he shakes his now-famous bon-bon, had its world premiere recently on MTV's "Total Request Live."
The video, shot by director Wayne Isham, debuted on "TRL" on Thursday at No. 5.
A representative for Martin told MTV News that Martin's new album will arrive in stores Nov. 14 and is titled "Sound Loaded".
"Sound Loaded" is Martin's first album since his self-titled release in May 1999. "Ricky Martin" has sold more than 7 million copies and spawned the hits "Livin' La Vida Loca," "Shake Your Bon-Bon" and "She's All I Ever Had."

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 14, 2000 -- Maybe they should call Carlos Santana "King of the World." Just a few months after his veritable sweep of the Grammy Awards, Santana took three trophies, including the record of the year award for "Corazon Espinado," his duet with Mexican rock band Mana, at the newfangled Latin Grammys on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.
"It feels like the first kiss," Santana said after winning. "It feels very natural and divine and human." The guitar god extraordinaire dedicated his awards to Africa, the women of the world, bilingual education and Nelson Mandela.
It was a star-studded event, as they say. Heavyweights such as Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and 'N Sync were among those trolling down the red carpet, and Ricky Martin opened the ceremony by performing a tribute to the late Tito Puente. The show was hosted by Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Andy Garcia

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 13, 2000 -- The first-ever Latin Grammy Awards will be broadcast tonight, building pride in Latin music, yet fueling its fair share of controversy. And singer Gloria Estefan and husband/producer Emilio Estefan are at the center of it all.
Latin music’s super couple formed the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences', or LARAS, and have been pushing for a Latin Grammys for a long time. Now that they’ve got it and they’re flaunting it, according to some naysayers who say they’re stealing the show.

His wife is one the featured performers … hmmm.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2000 -- So he got to shoot on an island off Thailand for months, flying friends in for visits and soaking up an island paradise. But Leonardo DiCaprio, star of "The Beach," has one little quibble.
Says Leo to the British magazine The Face, "It truly bothered me ... that [Richard, DiCaprio's character] never had any kind of sexual contact with Francoise," a stunning Frenchwoman played by Virginie Ledoyen, with whom he does a little smooching and frolicking in the surf.
"The constant foreplay between the two characters never amounted to anything," the 25-year-old DiCaprio says. "And I really wanted something, whether it be complete and utter rejection or some sort of wild sexual encounter. ... It just had to happen." Well, it just goes to show that even the King of the World can't have it all.

PASADENA, Calif., Jan. 10, 2000 -- If the Gallup pollsters of America had their way, "The Sixth Sense" and "Big Daddy" would sweep the Academy Awards. The two films dominated the film categories at the 26th Annual People's Choice Awards on Sunday night at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
"The Sixth Sense," which also stands a strong chance of Oscar nomination, won awards for Favorite Motion Picture and Favorite Dramatic Motion Picture; its star, its star, Bruce Willis, picked up the award for Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Drama.
"Big Daddy," which stands virtually no chance at an Oscar nomination (unless voters suddenly concoct a Best Achievement in Spitballs category), won for Favorite Comedy Motion Picture; Adam Sandler won Favorite Motion Picture Star in a Comedy.
