HOLLYWOOD, Mar. 6, 2001 -- So far it's been a busy week in TV news. Here's a quick round-up:

Not a Safe 'Bette':

CBS' fledgling sitcom "Bette" has been given the ax. Though the show posted impressive ratings after its premiere last fall, recent numbers have been in the basement. Without question, CBS execs showed no hesitation in pulling the plug on the Bette Midler vehicle: Wednesday night's episode is likely the show's finale, even though four new episodes have already been taped.

Locklear to Take Another 'Spin':

Should ABC decide to pick up "Spin City" for another season, the sitcom's leading lady has agreed to remain on board. Actress Heather Locklear has inked a one-year deal with DreamWorks Television to stay on as the show's star, alongside Charlie Sheen, who has already committed to another season. Over the past year, "Spin" has proven to be one of ABC

As the TV "upfront" continues in New York City, ABC has announced its fall schedule, adding three new dramas, two new sitcoms and cutting back Who Wants to be a Millionaire to two nights a week.

CBS also has its schedule falling into place, with the network making its official announcement Wednesday. Fox Television will reveal its schedule on Thursday.

CBS won the first week of the May sweeps, powered by its hit reality show Survivor II: The Australian Outback and its coupled drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The two shows scored second- and third-place finishes respectively, behind an episode of NBC's E.R., which saw the return of Sally Field. CBS averaged an 8.4 household rating for the week with a 14 share. NBC, no longer feeling the drag of ratings for its XFL football telecasts, was close behind with an 8.2/14. ABC, which placed two editions of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in the top ten, was third with a 7.1/12, followed by Fox with a 5.7/10. Meanwhile, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw set a modern record by maintaining the lead among network newscasts for 52 consecutive weeks.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30, 2001 -- Nominations for the 7th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today in Los Angeles at L.A.'s Pacific Design Center.

The unique show, honoring performers from 13 movie and TV categories, will air on TNT, Sunday, March 11 from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

The nominations in the movie categories aren’t surprising, with frontrunners Russell Crowe’s from “Gladiator” and Golden Globe winner Julia Roberts from “Erin Brockovich” easily making the list. Golden Globe winners Tom Hanks for “Cast Away” and Kate Hudson for “Almost Famous” snag nominations as well.

Several nominees in the television categories are returning to try their luck again, namely James Gandolfini and Edie Falco from “The Sopranos,” who both won in their respective categories last year. Also, die-hard dramas, such as “ER” and “Law & Order,” are back fo

Denzel Washington scored a box office touchdown, finally giving Hollywood some ticket sales to "Remember."

Buena Vista/Disney's PG-rated football drama "Remember the Titans," from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, kicked off in first place with a muscular ESTIMATED $21.2 million at 1,865 theaters ($11,383 per theater).

"Titans" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in wide release last weekend.

"Titans" marks the first $20 million-plus since the arrival of Columbia's "Hollow Man" last Aug. 4. It ranks as Denzel Washington's biggest opening, out-performing the $18.6 million that "Crimson Tide" kicked off with in May 1995.

Despite the strong performance by "Titans," key films in the marketplace continued to under-perform compared to a year earlier. Overall, the marketplace was down over 27% from last year.

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 28, 2000 It should be a weekend to "Remember" as "Remember the Titans" hits the box office gridiron.

"Titans," Buena Vista/Disney's PG-rated football theme drama, is kicking off at 1,865 theaters. It has insiders seeing green, a box office color that's been invisible so far this fall.

"I think we will remember the 'Titans,'" observes one studio executive. "They'll be over $20 million. At last a movie exploits the soft marketplace."

"There's no question 'Meet the Titans' will be the number one film -- $20-25 million," predicts another distributor.

Driven by "Titans," the weekend should be up sharply from last week when key films only managed to gross about $56 million. The improvement will come, a source maintains, "thanks to one movie, which is all the market ever needs to turn around."

"I hope the marketplace wil

2001-The race is going be tight this year.

As the TV season winds down and moves into the May sweeps, the major networks are duking it out for those coveted No. 1 spots, especially in the adults 18-49 group that advertisers love and the ego-boosting title of the most-watched network. This kind of tight primetime competition hasn't been seen in the TV arena in many years, but the reality TV explosion has truly changed the landscape and kept network execs on their toes.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 20, 2000 -- Erstwhile "Married ... with Children" star Ed O'Neill is returning to television.

And we're not talking about reruns of the syndicated show.

Daily Variety says that O'Neill has nabbed one of the two leads in the cop drama preliminarily titled "Big Apple."

In the series about the workings among the NYPD, FBI and the Mob, the actor will play an Irish top dog in the police department.

A VERY IMPORTANT SERIES: Looks like Pamela Anderson is going to have a new home. Variety says that the cable channel TNN has bought the rerun rights to the buxom blonde's action series "V.I.P."

For viewers who just can't get enough of the show, it will air on the station beginning fall 2002. And viewers can still catch Lee on reruns of "Baywatch."
