HOLLYWOOD, May 15, 2000 -- CANNES, May 15, 2000 -- There are two sides (at least) to everything, right? For example, at the exact same time you want to keep dancing at the tres late rooftop party, you also want to fall asleep for the next 18 hours. At the same time you want to do yoga, you long for a warm chocolate crepe. Marlon Wayans wants to be here to celebrate his role in Darren Aronofsky's (his post-"Pi" flick) new movie, "Requiem for a Dream" at the same time he has to be in Los Angeles for the birth of his new baby. But that's the Cannes Film Festival. The French keep the eternal paradox alive and well.
Other festival tidbits:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 21, 1999 — Gotham City, it seems, still needs a hero. Ben Affleck, currently seen in "Dogma" and the upcoming "Boiler Room," is the latest name to be linked with the "Batman" movies.
According to gossip columnist Liz Smith, Affleck is a "major contender" to play the Caped Crusader in Warner Bros.' latest "Batman" film. The franchise bottomed out in 1997 when Joel Schumacher's "Batman and Robin" earned a (relatively) disappointing $107.3 million at the box office. Batstar George Clooney joked that he may have killed the series.
But au contraire: Warner Bros. is reportedly considering two concepts for the latest sequel: One based on the animated WB show "Batman Beyond," in which an older Bruce Wayne passes his Batsuit to a teen-ager, and another based on the comic miniseries "Batman Year One," which traced Wayne's initial transformation into the

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 5, 2000 -- Most of the country will have to wait 21 more days to see “Thirteen Days.”
New Line Cinema has pushed back the wide release of Kevin Costner’s historical drama by nearly a month to avoid the high-profile competition it would have gone up against on its original launch date, Dec. 22.
"Days" will now be released on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, Jan. 12, Variety reports. The film will instead get a limited release Dec. 22 in New York and Los Angeles for Oscar consideration.
The Cuban Missile Crisis thriller still faces tough competition on Jan. 12 by films such as “Traffic” with Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, “Finding Forrester” with Sean Connery, “Antitrust” with Ryan Phillippe and Tim Robbins, Disney’s action comedy “Double Take” with Orlando Jones, and “O Brother, Where Art Though?” starring George Clooney.

After a record-setting Thanksgiving feast, Hollywood got only box office crumbs this weekend as ticket sales plunged 50% from their holiday levels.
Universal and Imagine Entertainment's PG-rated blockbuster comedy adventure "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" continued to top the chart in its third weekend with a still festive estimated $27.11 million (-48%) at 3,138 theaters (+4 theaters; $8,640 per theater). Its cume is approximately $172.0 million, heading for $250 million.
(NOTE: All percentage comparisons today are calculated against the three-day weekend portion of the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period.)

'Save' Tops Holiday Box Office
"Save the Last Dance" kicked off in first place to a record-setting $28 million for the four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
Distribution executives had anticipated that Paramount's PG-13-rated teen appeal dance drama would end 20th Century Fox's three-week chart-topping reign with "Cast Away," but they were only thinking in terms of an opening of about $20 million. Instead, "Dance" came in swinging to the tune of an ESTIMATED $28.00 million at 2,230 theaters ($12,556 per theater). (For the three-day period Friday through Sunday, Paramount estimated "Dance" at $24.00 million.)
"Dance" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing at over 1,000 theaters last weekend.
"$20 million was kind of the benchmark (estimate going into the weekend)," Paramount distribution president Wayne Lewellen said Sunday morning.

Moviegoers will "Cast" most of their box office votes for Tom Hanks this weekend.
"Cast Away," 20th Century Fox's PG-13-rated drama reteaming Hanks and "Forrest Gump" director Robert Zemeckis, opens at nearly 2,800 theaters.
"Sunday is going to be off because its Christmas Eve, but with Christmas on a Monday this year it's going to be a four-day weekend," an insider explains. "Based on what 'What Women Want' did last week (opening to $33.6 million), 'Cast Away' could open to $30 million-plus for four days. They'll be number one."
"A lot of business is going to happen over the four days," predicts another studio source. "I assume 'Cast Away' is going to be number one. I think it's going to do around $35 million."
Directed by Robert Zemeckis, "Cast Away" stars Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt.
Second place could see competition between Paramount's PG-13-rate

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 26, 2001 -- “Star Trek alum William Shatner, 69, has purchased a house that will serve as a “sober living” facility in remembrance of his late wife, Nerine, who died in an alcohol-related accident 18 months ago.
“I wanted to salvage some meaning out of all that experience,“ the actor told the Associated Press. “I thought the best way to do that would be in Nerine’s name to help other people.” The Nerine Shatner Friendly House will be an 11-room residential facility devoted to women recovering from alcoholism.
Nerine Shatner, a former model, drowned in the couple’s swimming pool in August 1999. Shatner discovered his wife in the pool upon returning to their home. An autopsy later indicated that she had hit her head on the bottom of the pool while diving and revealed that her blood alcohol level was 0.27 percent, which is more than three times the legal limit

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 2, 2001 -- There's no casting audiences away from the multiplexes this weekend.
In the New Year's holiday weekend that saw no new wide releases, Tom Hanks' "Survivor"-esque epic "Cast Away" held on to the top spot at the box office this weekend as expected with an estimated $31.1 million, hurling the film over the $100 million mark in only its second week of release, according to estimates from box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.
Coming in second for a second consecutive weekend is the sensitive male comedy "What Women Want" with $22.6 million. The Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt starrer has thus far grossed more than $110 million.
Rounding out the Top Five: Sandra Bullock's "Miss Congeniality" moved up two slots from last week to No. 3 with $15.4 million; Nicolas Cage's "The Family Man" dropped one slot from last week to No. 4 with $14 million

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 22, 2000 -- Santa is not the only big boy coming out to play this Christmas holiday.
Things are certainly looking up in December after Mel Gibson's $34 million-plus record-setting opening last weekend at the box office for "What Women Want."
And judging from the big names, business is only going to be better this weekend as heavily anticipated films such as Tom Hanks' "Cast Away" and Nicolas Cage's "Family Man" bow nationwide today.
"It's going to be a huge weekend this holiday. I can't see how it can't be, with all the hot openings and strong holdovers," Brandon Gray, editor of boxofficemojo.com, told Hollywood.com.
And despite all the new entries breathing down its neck, Gray maintains that Gibson's "What Women Want" might not go quietly down the rankings and that the battle to watch this four-day holiday at the box office will be between

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 1, 2000 - This one just gets weirder and weirder. Now in its 27th year, the People's Choice Awards have announced their nominees and the results are even more worth a recount than that mess in Florida.
Culled by a nationwide Gallup poll of 213 million Americans, according to Reuters reports, the voters picked "The Patriot," "Remember the Titans" and "The Green Mile" as best film nominees. But the problem is, "The Green Mile," starring Tom Hanks, was released last year. Hmmm.
The award show, which honors those in film, music and TV, will pay tribute to favorites like Mel Gibson, Britney Spears and, um, Alabama.
On the TV front, Michael Richards ("The Michael Richards Show") and John Goodman ("Normal, Ohio") are each nominated in the favorite male performer in a new TV series category along with "Ed's" Tom Cavanagh -- despite the fact that these sho

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 14, 2000 -- Does the female sex sell?
Judging from "Charlie's Angels" $75.4 million take in two weeks, the answer is a definite ... maybe.
The Drew Barrymore - Cameron Diaz - Lucy Liu starrer has overcome its infamous casting, script and $90 million production woes to become a bonafide hit. Milking its combination of cleavage, kung-fu fighting and Diaz's dance moves, "Charlie's Angels" urged moviegoers to "get some action," which they did, taking a strong summer for women and kicking it up a couple notches.
Once upon a time -- er, last spring, actually -- the Island of Moneymaking Girl-Power Movies only had one survivor: Julia Roberts. Sandra Bullock is in career rehab, Jodie Foster's a hit-or-miss. Universal launched "U-571" to over $20 million, sinking its Easter Weekend box office competition.
Hollywood had anticipated big action from the PG-13 World War II submarine drama given its 17% first-choice tracking score going into the weekend.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 20, 2000 -- William Shatner is working again. The old-school "Star Trek" dinosaur has joined the cast of "Miss Congeniality" as an embittered beauty pageant host. The film stars Sandra Bullock as a stalwart FBI agent who goes undercover as a Miss New Jersey pageant contestant in order to thwart a planned terrorist attack.
Shatner's last film role was in the 1998 sci-fi send-up "Free Enterprise," wherein he poked fun at himself and his larger-than-life "Trek" character. More recently, he's been paying the rent with those name-your-price-for-plane-tickets commercials.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 16, 2000 -- Everybody loves a good court-martialing. And everybody loves to see a good-hearted drunk get off the sauce and get his/her life back on track. Lucky for everybody, the two biggest movies in America this weekend were about those two very topics. "Rules of Engagement," the military drama starring Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones, reigned atop the box-office heap for the second consecutive frame, followed closely by Sandra Bullock's much-hyped "28 Days." Edward Norton's directorial debut, the comedy "Keeping the Faith," finished at No. 3, according to box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Inc.
Remaining in the Top Five were "Erin Brockovich" and "The Road to El Dorado." Meanwhile, the controversial "American Psycho" debuted at No. 7 with a weak $4.9 mil, despite opening in about 1,500 theaters, and several recent contenders were b

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 17, 2000 -- Five years ago, “Waterworld” threatened to destroy Kevin Costner’s career, what with all the negative press surrounding its budget overruns, logistical filming problems and on-set rifts. And the film reportedly did destroy Costner’s working relationship with Kevin Reynolds, the director who had previously worked with the star on "Fandango" and "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves." (Remember that, after Reynolds finished shooting "Waterworld," Costner fired him and edited the picture himself -- and threw in some CGI effects to enhance his own receding hairline.)
But now that’s all water under the bridge (pardon the pun). According to Variety, Costner and Reynolds are seriously thinking about working together again and -- get this -- the movie they want to make takes place mostly at sea.
Reynolds and Costner would reteam for "Okracoke," a

In a bit of even better news, this means there's no way Columbus will possibly have time to ruin, er, helm either the planned "Spider-man" flick or the "Planet of the Apes" remake -- two movies the "Nine Months" auteur had been attached to in recent years. (The "Apes" gig is done deal anyway -- Tim Burton's set for that one.)
As for the "Potter" movie: It'll be the first in what Warner Bros. is hoping will be a kiddie franchise based on the mega-selling kiddie book series.
Shooting could begin as soon as this summer, with a Summer 20001 release planned.
Columbus comes to the project after mentor Steven Spielberg famously turned down the project.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 11, 2000 -- "Hannibal" can be taken off the endangered film project list, at least for the time being.
Universal has confirmed its intentions to stick by the "Silence of the Lambs" sequel, laying to rest reports on Entertainment Weekly Online last week that the studio was considering canning the project after Jodie Foster bailed out to instead direct Claire Danes in "Flora Plum."
"As far as we know, [this project] is alive," a Universal spokeswoman says. "[Star Anthony] Hopkins and [director Ridley] Scott are both very committed. We like what we've got, and the revised script is really, really good."
