LOS ANGELES, Mar. 12, 2001 -- It looks like Russell and Tom will be twiddling their thumbs a while longer.
The two frontrunners for the Best Actor Oscar were trounced at Sunday night's Screen Actors Guild Awards, a closely watched barometer whose lead performance winners have gone on to Oscar gold 10 out of 12 times. The culprit? Benicio Del Toro, who took the lead actor trophy for "Traffic" regardless of his supporting role Oscar nod.
The drug-war drama, which features a core cast of 19 and 135 speaking parts in all, won the evening's film ensemble award over "Almost Famous," "Billy Elliot," "Chocolat" and "Gladiator."
Meanwhile, Julia Roberts jumped another hurdle toward Oscar glory with a leading actress win for "Erin Brockovich," with Albert Finney winning for supporting actor.

NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 24, 2000 -- The Hollywood Foreign Press Association's 57th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night was dubbed "Hollywood's party of the year," and it certainly brought out some of Hollywood's biggest names. But a closer look under the show's "Holly-hood" reveals New York, like Hollywood, as big a star of the ceremony.
Yes, Hollywood pillars such as Jim Carrey, Tom Cruise, Jack Lemmon and Peter Fonda hugged statuettes for, respectively, "Man on the Moon," "Magnolia," "Inherit the Wind" and "Passion of Ayn Rand." And DreamWorks' "American Beauty" and Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 2," both, cinematically speaking, very much American beauties, are most definitely brilliant Hollywood creations.
But, moving right along and Hollywood aside, New Yorkers couldn't get enough awards and recognition. Central Park West's Michael J. Fox, who sadly is leaving "Spin Cit

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 30, 2001 -- Nominations for the 7th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today in Los Angeles at L.A.'s Pacific Design Center.
The unique show, honoring performers from 13 movie and TV categories, will air on TNT, Sunday, March 11 from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.
The nominations in the movie categories aren’t surprising, with frontrunners Russell Crowe’s from “Gladiator” and Golden Globe winner Julia Roberts from “Erin Brockovich” easily making the list. Golden Globe winners Tom Hanks for “Cast Away” and Kate Hudson for “Almost Famous” snag nominations as well.
Several nominees in the television categories are returning to try their luck again, namely James Gandolfini and Edie Falco from “The Sopranos,” who both won in their respective categories last year. Also, die-hard dramas, such as “ER” and “Law & Order,” are back fo

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Jan. 21, 2001 -- One thing remains clear after tonight's 58th Annual Golden Globe Awards: There was a definite lack of a dominant film on the block. Though certain sure bets did come out victorious, no single film was able to sweep the Globes, leaving the upcoming Oscar race as wide open as it was before.
Heavy contenders "Traffic," "Almost Famous," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Gladiator" all took home two Globes apiece at the annual star-studded event.
As expected, Julia Roberts won the award for best actress in a movie (drama) for her work in "Erin Brockovich". However, she was visibly surprised when "Brockovich" director Steven Soderbergh went home empty-handed.
"I was shocked, actually," Roberts said backstage. "I suppose when I presented the best director and Steven [Soderbergh] didn't win for either film ["Traffic" and "Erin

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 14, 2001 -- "Beverly Hills, 90210" alumnus Jason Priestley will spend five days in a private L.A. work-release program after pleading no contest last year to a felony drunken-driving charge.
An L.A. judge sentenced the former teen heartthrob in March to five days in the correctional facility and three year's summary probation. Priestley's driver's license was also suspended for one year, and he was ordered to enroll in a three-month drug- and alcohol-treatment program in exchange for dropping a second felony DUI charge.
The actor will serve his time this month, and the five-day stay must be completed by Jan. 30.
Priestley, 31, was arrested in December 1999 after he crashed his Porsche into a power pole, trash cans and a parked car in the Hollywood Hills.

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 11, 2001 -- If anything, it won't be a total and complete shutout for "Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

The film's ensemble cast, which includes Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, James Marsden, Famke Janssen and Anna Paquin, have all signed on to do the sequel, which, as of now, still has yet to be scripted.
According to the report, Singer's commitment will likely depend on whether he can squeeze the project into his busy schedule. The helmer has already been tapped to do "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" with Mike Myers as his next project.

HOLLYWOOD, June 4, 2000 -- The networks are in rerun mode now, so think of this as your big chance to find out what’s on Fox. Hey, come on, we just kid Fox because we love 'em.
Actually, summer is the time for cable TV to pick up the slack and to prove it’s worth paying for, so let’s take a look at what they’ve got this week.
-- It’s steamy, ribald, often shocking, often funny and sometimes even poignant. It’s “Sex and the City” (9 p.m. EDT/PDT, Sunday) back for its third season on HBO. Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall head an ensemble of single, professional Manhattanites happily weeding through as many Mr. Wrongs as it takes to one day find Mr. Right. Women can usually relate pretty well, as these well drawn and varied characters always seem to be either picking up the broken pieces of their last relationships, or generating the broken pieces of the latest one. SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 25, 2000 -- The honeymoon in Vegas is over. (And apparently has been for a long, long time.)
Oscar-winning star Nicolas Cage and actress/wife Patricia Arquette are divorcing after nearly five years of marriage, Arquette's publicist confirmed today.
Arquette, Cage Cage, 36, filed the petition Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing the dreaded "irreconcilable differences." The split was described as "amicable" and "a mutual decision" by Arquette's rep, Simon Halls.
The real shocker is Cage's divorce petition: It says the couple separated just nine months after they wed -- roughly four years ago.
Rumors had been circulating about the couple's happiness for the past few years. While the two often were arm in arm at premieres and award shows, onlookers commented that they looked about as thrilled as siblings forced to share

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2000 -- And now we know: "Ally McBeal" (the series, if not the character) will not end up with Billy Thomas.
At least that's the way it looks with word that actor Gil Bellows -- Billy to Calista Flockhart's titular heroine -- will depart hit Fox legal-eagle series at the end of this season.
The network has confirmed that Bellows' Billy Thomas character is to leave the Cage/Fish firm in the spring. But hope lives -- at least when Fox notes that Bellows/Billy will be back on a recurring basis next TV year. No details on how many episodes that gig will entail or under what circumstances the Billy character will be written off.
According to gossip maven Liz Smith, Bellows wants to (what else?) pursue other/different opportunities -- like, um, the movies. The 32-year-old actor recently completed work on the big-screen romantic-drama "Beauti
