What will September bring?
Plenty, say the major TV networks as they begin their weekly series of meetings in New York known as the TV "upfront," hyping their 2001-02 TV schedules to advertisers. As much as 80 percent of next season's ad inventory is bought during this time.
NBC and the WB have announced their lineups, with ABC scheduled to make its presentation Tuesday.
NBC
NBC will shake things up a little. It has lessened its sitcom load by scheduling only eight comedy series, including three new sitcoms, the lowest the network has aired in two decades. Gone is the Sunday night movie, an NBC staple since the mid-1970s. It also is banking on its new primetime game show, The Weakest Link, to prosper. The Anne Robinson-hosted quizzer will remain at 8 p.m. Mondays while a second serving will now air at 8 p.m. Sundays.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 12, 2000 -- You can just imagine the meeting of NBC executives as they contemplate making a dent in the game-show-fueled ABC juggernaut: "What can we do to really lay the 'Smackdown' in the ratings? Who or what is big enough, tough enough, 'electrifying' enough to send Regis Philbin into the kitchen to open up that fridge and pour himself a nice tall glass of SHUT-UP JUICE?!"
The answer? "Freaks and Geeks" is back Mondays! And The Rock is hosting "Saturday Night Live"! Who is The Rock, you ask? He is only the World Wrestling Federation's "People’s Champion," as well as the self-proclaimed "most-electrifying man in sports entertainment." (Duh.)
Back to those guys in a second. But, first, in the action-packed TV week ahead, we also get: Cody Gifford! Yes, you’ve been hearing about him for years, and now is your chance to finally get to see littl

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 29, 2000 -- Call it the curse of "90210."
"Beverly Hills 90210" alum and current "Charmed" star Shannen Doherty was slapped with a drunken driving charge after her black pickup was spotted weaving on a Southern California freeway, Reuters reports.
The 29-year-old actress's truck was pulled over at about 3 a.m. PDT on the Ventura Freeway in Thousand Oaks, Calif., just north of Los Angeles.
According to the report, the actress was given a sobriety test at the scene and was then taken to jail for a blood test to determine her alcohol level.
The results of the test will not be known for at least a week.
Doherty was charged with suspicion of drunken driving and was released several hours later without bail. She is due in court on Jan. 26 for an arraignment hearing.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 25, 2000 -- We know. You haven't watched since college. You haven't cared since high school. But come on. This is important: "Beverly Hills, 90210" star-crossed lovebirds Donna Martin (Tori Spelling) and David Silver (Brian Austin Green) will wed on the series finale, it has been reported. The two-hour special is scheduled to air May 17 on Fox.
Past cast members returning for the TV-land nuptials include Jason Priestley, Gabrielle Carteris and the formerly Amber-fied Tiffani Thiessen. (Note the absence of exiled alum Shannen Doherty.)
"90210" is ending a 10-year run. Donna and David were an item for more than half that time.

PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 24, 2000 -- Brace yourself, prime-time soap junkies -- it's looking like curtains for both "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Party of Five."
Trade paper reports today say Fox is preparing to ax the two long-running series after this season. As is the way in TV, money and ratings apparently teamed to doom the once-happening pair.
Both Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter say Fox was unable to come to a deal with TV legend Aaron Spelling to buy at least 12 new episodes of his company's "90210" to air this summer. Reports say the network decided the money just wasn't worth it -- what with the formerly hot show a good six seasons beyond its sizzling hot status. ("90210" spinoff "Melrose Place" died last year.) There also was said to concern over whether the likes of Spelling's own daughter Tori would reup for an 11th season.
And then there's the m
