Although it had seemed like a foregone conclusion that Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" would be restored and re-released by Warner Bros. in 2001, it may only get limited distribution in four cities -- Seattle, Washington DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles -- late this year.

HOLLYWOOD, July 3, 2000 - Get ready for some movie déjà vu when titles like "The Exorcist" reappear on neighborhood marquees in the coming months. And we're not talking about revival house screenings, either. You see, on top of all the hits (and none-hits), there'll be some pretty familiar titles that'll be competing for your eight (or more) bucks - and Linda Blair's barf-o-rific horror classic is just the tip of the re-release iceberg.

For the uninitiated, "The Exorcist" was the blockbuster of 1973, nabbing a total of 10 Oscar noms; winning two (for best original screenplay and best sound) and making Linda Blair forever a target of easy satire. The re-release -- bowing nationwide this September - will feature a 12-minute deleted scene from the original film wherein Blair's character does the so-called "Spider Walk" down some stairs. It's just one of the goodies in store for cin

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 10, 2000 -- It's official: The whole world loves stories about lecherous, unpleasant people! "American Beauty" Yes, "American Beauty" picked up where it left off at last month's Oscars, taking a field-best six awards at the British equivalent of the Academy Awards (officially known as the British Academy Film Awards). Kevin Spacey repeated as best actor with leading lady Annette Bening avenging her Oscar loss with a best actress win. The film was also named best picture at Sunday's ceremony.

The only major "Beauty" player to be denied another chance to issue really sincere thank-yous was Oscar-approved director Sam Mendes, who lost out to Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar for "All About My Mother."

British stars Jude Law ("The Talented Mr. Ripley") and Maggie Smith ("Tea with Mussolini") were honored in the supporting-acting categories on

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 6, 2000 -- Steven Spielberg can add another award to his paperweight collection. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts honored the "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" auteur with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award on Saturday in a chi-chi $500 per plate reception in Los Angeles.

More than one thousand Hollywood luminaries, including DreamWorks partner Jeffrey Katzenberg, director Robert Zemeckis, wife Kate Capshaw and actor Ben Kinsley, were in attendance to witness Britain’s Prince Andrew present the award to the director.

"(The British film industry) has truly created more than a ripple for the last 65 years. It has been a tidal wave of creativity," Spielberg said at the event.

Besides "Jaws," the 64-year-old director is also known for era-defining films such as "E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial" and the "Indiana Jones" franchise.

From an artistic standpoint, it's easy to understand why Steven Spielberg declined to undertake a third trip to Jurassic Park.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 7, 2000 - They haven't come close to cracking the Billboard Top 100, but the Beta Band are suddenly enjoying the perks of membership in a much cooler list: Top Five Bands. According to John Cusack, anyway. If you haven't heard of the Beta Band, you're not alone - either that, or you just haven't seen "High Fidelity," in which Cusack plays the owner of a super-hip, indie-minded Chicago record store. In a scene that's as close to free advertising as you can get, Cusack turns to one of his employees and says, "I am now going to sell five copies of 'The 3 Ep's' by The Beta Band." As he plays the cut "Dry the Rain" on the store's in-house stereo system, customers start bobbing their heads in approval, and then make their way to the counter to buy the CD.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 25, 2000 -- Martin Lawrence is just glad to be alive.

In an interview on Thursday's "Entertainment Tonight," the comic actor ("Martin," "Blue Streak") spoke out for the first time about his brush with death in August, when he collapsed while jogging and lapsed into a coma.

Martin Lawrence "It kind of woke me up and made me appreciate life ... and just be happy to be here," Lawrence, 34, told "ET." "You make due with the time you have here. Hopefully when you pass on, somebody can look back and say, 'Wow, they made a difference in some kind of way.'"

Lawrence's mistake was running while wearing several layers of clothing in hopes of sweating away some excess poundage for his role in "Big Momma's House," which is now in production (after a delayed start due to the star's hospitalization).

Lawrence spent three days in a coma and unde

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 18, 2000 -- The last to know Steven Spielberg had signed on to produce and direct the film version of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" was apparently the director himself.

A spokesman from Spielberg's office says the filmmaker hasn't officially climbed aboard and is still considering the project.

"Potter" is just one of the projects Spielberg is considering along with Stanley Kubrick conceived "A.I." (for artificial intelligence) and a bio about Charles Lindbergh. He's also set to make the Tom Cruise starrer "Minority Report" and a movie version of the acclaimed book "Memoirs of a Geisha."

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 17, 2000 -- Steven Spielberg reportedly has won the race to bring Harry Potter to the big screen.

The Times of London says Spielberg will direct and produce "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," based on the hit children's book series about a schoolboy wizard.

Robert Zemeckis, Jonathan Demme and Mike Newell were among the directors Spielberg beat out for the movie, according to the paper.

Warner Bros., which owns the Harry Potter screen rights, dictated that Spielberg must make the film his next movie. Spielberg, whose docket also includes an adaptation of the best seller "Memoirs of a Geisha," had two possibles in the works: "A.I." and "Minority Report," both produced by his own studio, DreamWorks. "A.I" (the acronym for artificial intelligence) is based on a story outline by late filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. "Minority Report" is a

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 30, 1999 -- For all the controversy and hype surrounding "Eyes Wide Shut," the film will most likely be remembered as director Stanley Kubrick's last opus -- finished just days before he died in his sleep March 7.

Stanley Kubrick

The 70-year-old eccentric filmmaker's career was founded on spectacle, from the shocking "A Clockwork Orange" to the profound "2001: A Space Odyssey." It somehow seemed fitting that "Eyes Wide Shut," despite the star talent of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, would make its mark by bearing the director's ghost.

The year that was marked the passing of other legends, as well -- from George C. Scott (Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" star) to singer Mel Tormé to movie critic Gene Siskel.

Some, like Sylvia Sidney and DeForest Kelley, died after long, rich careers; others, such as Dana Plato and David Strickland, succumb

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Mar. 24, 2000 -- Does an Oscar win equal prestige? Yes. How about a career jump-start? Gwyneth Paltrow Well, er ... Most of the time.

For every, say, Kevin Spacey who escapes indie fringedom to Hollywood stardom after bagging an Oscar (for 1995's "The Usual Suspects"), there's a Marisa Tomei whose film career seems jinxed following a win (for 1992's "My Cousin Vinny").

That said, let's take a look at what the Oscar has done for last year's winners. Or they Marisa Tomeis or Kevin Spaceys?

After staking a supporting role in the comic-boo
