"Charlie's Angels" won this weekend's box office election by a mile despite projections that "Little Nicky" might give it a devil of a time.

"Angels," Columbia's PG-13 action adventure comedy, continued kicking box office butt in its second weekend with a still sexy estimated $25.0 million (-38%) at 3,037 theaters (theater count unchanged; $8,232 per theater). Its cume is approximately $75.4 million, heading for $150 million or more.

"Angels" had the highest per-theater average for any film playing in 500 or more theaters last weekend.

"Great news for us," Sony Pictures Entertainment worldwide marketing & distribution president Jeff Blake said Sunday morning. "It's just a terrific hold considering the record opening we had the week before."

Asked where "Angels" is going, Blake replied, "We should be able to hit $100 million by Thanksgiving and still have t

This weekend's box office election is too close to call, according to insiders who see a close race between "Charlie's Angels" and "Little Nicky" for the popular vote.

Columbia's PG-13-rated action adventure comedy kicked off to a record setting $40.1 million last weekend. New Line's PG-13-rated youth appeal comedy "Little Nicky," opening at about 2,910 theaters, is flying high on the Hollywood radar screen.

"It probably will fall less than 50%," an insider predicts about "Angels." "Figure 40%. So you're looking at $24 million. It could be a tight race with 'Little Nicky.' I'd have to say $22-24 million for both of them."

"I think you've got to figure it's 'Charlie's Angels' again unless 'Little Nicky' just really surges here at the last minute, which it could with young males," another studio executive cautions.

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 12, 2000 -- Girls ruled again as "Charlie’s Angels" held on to the top spot at the weekend box office for a second consecutive week, defeating the likes of Adam Sandler, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Val Kilmer.

"Charlie’s Angels," starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu and directed by Joseph McGinty Nichol (aka McG), took in an estimated $25 million, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations.

Adam Sandler’s devil of a new comedy "Little Nicky" bowed at No. 2 with $18.6 million, and the U.S. Navy drama "Men of Honor" starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro grabbed the No. 3 spot with an estimated $14 million.

Showing little sign of weakening, "Meet the Parents" took in another $10.59 million over the weekend, bringing its grand total to $130.3 million.

Another debut, "Red Planet" starring Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss and Tom Siz

WOOD, Nov. 10, 2000 -- The battle between heaven and hell will be played out in cineplexes across the nation this weekend.

And by that, we mean the box office war between last week's reigning champ, "Charlie's Angels", and this week's hot contender, Adam Sandler's "Little Nicky".

Despite a mega $40 mil plus opening achieved by "Charlie's Angels" last weekend, Sandler's inexplicable star power -- and the fact that "Little Nicky" is the comic's first big outing since last year's "Big Daddy" -- could very well topple the detective chick flick from the top.

Certainly much less threatening than Sandler, the Navy diver drama Men of Honor and the Mars thriller "Red Planet" will also come out for a piece of the box office pie this weekend.

Here's a look at all the major releases hitting theaters today:

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 9, 2000 -- We don't know what's stranger: Adam Sandler doing a P.T. Anderson-type movie, or P.T. Anderson doing an Adam Sandler-type film.

Either way, the synergy might just happen. Daily Variety says today that the "Little Nicky" supercomic is fielding opportunities for his next project, and one of them is a script which "Magnolia" helmer Anderson specifically wrote with Sandler and actress Emily Watson in mind.

But competing for Sandler's attention right now is another comedy penned by his writing partner, Tim Herlihy. And the funnyman's involvement with either project is likely contingent upon the anticipated actors and writers strike next summer.

But in the meantime, Sandler's latest comedy, "Little Nicky," opens this Friday.

HOLLYWOOD, May 23, 2000 -- Looks like another "Saturday Night Live" reunion is in the making. Today's Daily Variety says Will Ferrell, aka the "SNL" guy from those laff-riot comedies "A Night at the Roxbury" and "Superstar," is slated to join Mike Myers in "Dieter," a big-screen project inspired by Myers old skit "Sprockets."

The story will follow Myers' suggestively kinky German talk-show host Dieter as his beloved pet monkey gets kidnapped. Ferrell will play his American cousin who is enlisted to find the missing monkey.

GIRL TROUBLE: "Dawson’s Creek’s" Katie Holmes will join Tom Sizemore, Tim Allen and Rene Russo in "Big Trouble," a Disney comedy about a group of people whose lives are interrupted by a nuclear scare. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Holmes will play Russo’s daughter.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 7, 2000 -- Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston can relax; they are now surpassed in the couples rumor mill by the betrothed Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. So we're here to quash some buzzings and entertain you with others.

The latest rumor is that Zeta-Jones wants to take Douglas' name after they wed, according to the New York Daily News. Does this make her Catherine Douglas or Catherine Zeta-Douglas? We're not sure. But while we find out, we can tell you that she's not converting to Judaism, according to Douglas.

"I have had no formal religious training myself, and there has never been any debate with Catherine about it. Religion has not entered into the equation. Our child will be raised the same way I was," Douglas, 55, told London's Mirror.

He also admits that he misplaced her engagement ring before he proposed New Year's Eve.

PASADENA, Calif. -- After nearly a week of trying to make contact with the $165 million Mars Polar Lander, scientists and NASA officials have all but given up the mission as a failure. Never an industry to shy away from big-money crap shoots, the motion picture community is putting a great deal of faith in a pair of Mars-related pictures that it hopes will generate substantially more interest and success than the recent NASA fiasco.

Disney is putting a great deal of time and strength behind its summer 2000 offering "Mission to Mars." Directed by Brian DePalma and starring Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins, Don Cheadle, Kim Delaney and Jerry O'Connell, "Mars" surrounds a seemingly failed manned mission to the red planet. As rescue operations are put in place, it is quickly discovered that an even greater menace may be waiting for them on Mars.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 18, 2000 -- It's amazing what a $171 million blockbuster can do for your career. A few years ago, Carrie-Anne Moss was toiling in straight-to-video movies and TV shows such as "Models Inc." This week, she's under contract for two upcoming sequels to "The Matrix."

Word comes today from Variety that Canadian-born Moss will reprise the character of Trinity -- a role in which she was so good, she even had us believing that Keanu Reeves was a messianic hero.

Meanwhile, Moss also co-stars with Tom Sizemore and Val Kilmer in the upcoming "Red Planet:; with Burt Reynolds in "The Crew"; and with Guy Pearce in "Memento," which debuts next month at Cannes.

As they say, a rolling Moss gathers no ... oh, forget it.
