HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 31, 2001 -- Cate Blanchett is in negotiations to join co-star Kevin Spacey in Miramax's "The Shipping News," the film adaptation of Annie Proulx's 1994 Pulitzer prize-winning novel. The film is to be directed by Lasse Hallstrom ("Chocolat").

The story centers around a man (Spacey) who must rebuild his life after his wife runs off with his two daughters and sells them into prostitution. Blanchett will be playing the role of the ex-wife, Petal Bear.

Principal photography is scheduled to start before the potential strikes occur.

Blanchett, now being seen in the tense drama "The Gift," recently wrapped production on New Line's "Lord of the Rings."

A "DOMESTIC" BUSCEMI: Steve Buscemi ("Fargo") has signed to play a supporting role in Harold Becker's newest film, "Domestic Disturbance," for Paramount. Shooting started Monday in North Carolina.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 17, 2000 -- There was lots of Olympic Gold but very little box office gold this weekend.

Insiders had anticipated low grosses and a close race for first place, and that's exactly what they got. With ticket sales down over 33 percent from this time last year, it took only $5.7 million for Universal's "The Watcher" to nail down the top spot.

Key films in the marketplace - those grossing $500,000 or more for the weekend - did approximately $47.58 million. Distribution sources said Sunday morning they believed that was the lowest total since the weekend of Sept. 11-13, 1998, when key films took in $48.85 million.

Was it the Olympics that killed the movie business this weekend? Key distribution executives share some thoughts about that in today's report (see OLYMPICS IMPACT below).

The weekend's biggest success story was DreamWor

SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 10, 2000 -- Moviegoers' eyes were on "The Watcher" as Hollywood's fall season got off to an unexciting start.

Box office levels across the board were considerably less than insiders had anticipated going into the weekend. With many studio executives out of town attending the Toronto Film Festival, few insights were offered as to what went wrong. Overall, key films were estimated to have grossed about 22 percent less than this time last year.

With televised coverage of the Olympics expected to provide stiff competition from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1, Hollywood is holding back on opening high-profile films in September. That will almost certainly be reflected in ticket sales for the month.

"With the Olympics and everything else, I think it's going to be a lousy fall," predicted one insider.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., August 31, 2000 -- It's cheerleaders vs. immortals this weekend, and insiders are betting the beauties will beat the beasts.

Universal's "Bring It On" could wind up topping the chart with a relatively modest four-day gross of $12-14 million. Last Labor Day weekend saw Buena Vista/Touchstone's blockbuster "The Sixth Sense" in first place with a hefty $29.3 million.

Typically, Hollywood doesn't expect the box office to sizzle over the four-day Labor Day weekend. The holiday marks the end of summer and a return to school for youngsters and hasn't been seen over the years by the industry as a great time to go after moviegoers with high-profile, big-budget openings.

"Even people who don't have kids are kind of in a frame of mind of getting back to work and buckling down," explains one executive.

After kicking off last weekend with a chart-

HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 2, 2000 -- Forget about the monkey. Let's just all do the catwalk.

The Hollywood Reporter says today that funny guy Mike Myers, who last made headlines with the multi-round legal imbroglio against Universal Pictures over the scrapped "Dieter" flick, is developing a comedy with DreamWorks about the life of a supermodel.

The flick, inspired by fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi's comic book "The Adventures of Sandee the Supermodel," might star Myers. No writer has been attached to the project yet.

If the flick does get rolling, Universal is expected to collaborate on the project with Myers, thus fulfilling the settlement commitment bore out of the "Dieter" lawsuits.

MAKING NOISE: Expect Vince Vaughn to cause a stir. The actor might co-star with John Travolta in the thriller "Domestic Disturbance," according to the Reporter. The film, which goes i

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 19, 2000 -- It’s over for another one of Hollywood’s Golden Gay Couples. Rocker Melissa Etheridge and her partner, director Julie Cypher, announced today that they are calling it quits after 12 years together, USA Today reports.

The couple has two small children.

“With the utmost of love and respect for one another, we have decided to separate,” the pair announced in a statement released by Island Records, Etheridge’s label. “As committed parents, our top priority continues to be what is in the best interest of our children. Though elements of our lives will change, our family will always remain intact.”

Cypher gave birth to the couple’s daughter, 2, and son, 1. They told Rolling Stone magazine in January that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young legend David Crosby was the children’s biological father, donating his sperm so that the pair could give bi

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 5, 2000 -- The country home of former Hollywood Golden Gay Couple Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche is up for sale. The Los Angeles Times reports that the $2.75 million property in Ojai, Calif., 10 acres complete with citrus and avocado orchards, is on the market.

The couple were together for 3 1/2 years before their split last month. Friends said that no third party was involved in the breakup announced Aug. 19, and the women described their parting as amicable.

They also have a home in the Hollywood Hills, purchased in June 1999 for $1.7 million.

Shortly after the breakup, Heche, 31, was hospitalized after walking into a Central California home in a dazed state. Fresno police declined to elaborate on the actress’s condition, but a friend later said that Heche was suffering from sunstroke.

Heche is currently working on a film in Toront

HOLLYWOOD, May 25, 2000 - Imagine you're the Paramount promo person in charge of the studio's official "Shaft" Web site. Then imagine you try to register the no-brainer URL -- www.shaft.com. Now envision (bare with us here) your frustration in finding that you've been beaten to the punch. Not only is the URL registered, but it's been taken by, ahem, The Ultimate Penis and Parts Resource Center, which is exclusively dedicated to the fine techniques of penile enlargement.

Oops.

This experience is not uncommon in the crowded cyber real-estate market. And with more and more Web sites springing up on the Net, fewer of the so-called "good" and/or "cool" dot.com names are available. To movie studios, the URL shortage means execs have to be more creative -- no more with the tagging a dot.com (or, sometimes, a dot.net) at the end of a movie title.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 2, 2000 -- Sean "Puffy" Combs apparently has time to mix business with charges.

While attending the Grammys last week, prosecutors accused the rapper/mogul of trying to bribe his driver into taking the fall for a gun found in his vehicle after a New York club shooting in December. (He pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the bribery charges -- just as he had refuted gun possession charges in January.)

Though Combs' exact involvement in the incident is still in dispute, he's definitely hoping to be involved in the indie comedy "Made."

The Hollywood Reporter says he's in final negotiations to play the head of a New York-based syndicate. The fish-out-of-water tale marks the directing debut of actor-writer Jon Favreau. The story has Favreau and "Swingers" comrade Vince Vaughn playing boxers and lifelong pals who get involved in a money-laundering sch
