HOLLYWOOD, August 27, 2000 -- Two, four, six, eight! Who do we appreciate? Give up?
Then you probably weren't one of the people who bought $17.4 million worth of tickets to this weekend's biggest movie, the cheerleaders-at-war teen flick "Bring it On."
The competition wasn't even close, including Wesley Snipes' latest, "The Art of War," which came in second with an estimated $11.2 mil for the weekend, and "The Crew," which didn't even crack the Top Five.
Here's a rundown of this weekend's Top 10 at the box office, with figures provided by Exhibitor Relations Co.:
1. "Bring It On" ($17.4 mil, opening weekend) 2. "The Art of War" ($11.2 mil, opening weekend) 3. "The Cell" ($19.6 mil, $33.7 mil overall) 4. "Space Cowboys" ($6.6 mil, $63.8 mil overall) 5. "The Original Kings of Comedy" ($6.1 mil, $21.4 mil overall) 6. "What Lies Beneath" ($4.5 mil, $130.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., September 10, 2000 -- Moviegoers' eyes were on "The Watcher" as Hollywood's fall season got off to an unexciting start.
Box office levels across the board were considerably less than insiders had anticipated going into the weekend. With many studio executives out of town attending the Toronto Film Festival, few insights were offered as to what went wrong. Overall, key films were estimated to have grossed about 22 percent less than this time last year.
With televised coverage of the Olympics expected to provide stiff competition from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1, Hollywood is holding back on opening high-profile films in September. That will almost certainly be reflected in ticket sales for the month.
"With the Olympics and everything else, I think it's going to be a lousy fall," predicted one insider.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., August 31, 2000 -- It's cheerleaders vs. immortals this weekend, and insiders are betting the beauties will beat the beasts.
Universal's "Bring It On" could wind up topping the chart with a relatively modest four-day gross of $12-14 million. Last Labor Day weekend saw Buena Vista/Touchstone's blockbuster "The Sixth Sense" in first place with a hefty $29.3 million.
Typically, Hollywood doesn't expect the box office to sizzle over the four-day Labor Day weekend. The holiday marks the end of summer and a return to school for youngsters and hasn't been seen over the years by the industry as a great time to go after moviegoers with high-profile, big-budget openings.
"Even people who don't have kids are kind of in a frame of mind of getting back to work and buckling down," explains one executive.
After kicking off last weekend with a chart-

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 14, 2000 -- Does the female sex sell?
Judging from "Charlie's Angels" $75.4 million take in two weeks, the answer is a definite ... maybe.
The Drew Barrymore - Cameron Diaz - Lucy Liu starrer has overcome its infamous casting, script and $90 million production woes to become a bonafide hit. Milking its combination of cleavage, kung-fu fighting and Diaz's dance moves, "Charlie's Angels" urged moviegoers to "get some action," which they did, taking a strong summer for women and kicking it up a couple notches.
Once upon a time -- er, last spring, actually -- the Island of Moneymaking Girl-Power Movies only had one survivor: Julia Roberts. Sandra Bullock is in career rehab, Jodie Foster's a hit-or-miss. Meg Ryan and Michelle Pfeiffer owe half their box office draw to their huge male co-stars, while Sharon Stone is banking on "Basic Instinct 2" to reviv

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 6, 2000 -- Like it or not, a superstar maintains the right to be busy. And like it or not, Leonardo DiCaprio is a busy superstar.
The "Titanic" superstar has temporarily dropped out of his next project, DreamWorks' "Catch Me If You Can," The Hollywood Reporter says. The studio has yet to decide on whether to recast the role or to wait for a possible change of mind from the actor.
The project, which co-stars "The Sopranos'" James Gandolfini, is based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., a scam artist/impersonator who successfully committed frauds in 26 foreign countries.
DiCaprio is currently shooting Martin Scorsese's big gangster flick "Gangs of New York," which is running two weeks over schedule.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., January 24, 2000 -- Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane!
No, it's another "Spider-Man" rumor.
For nearly seven years, speculation has run rampant among comic-book geeks and genre-film fanatics about the red-and-blue building-climbing superhero. Nearly every director worth his box-office salt has been linked to "Spider-Man" at one time or another, beginning with no less than James Cameron ("Titanic") and ending with Sam Raimi ("A Simple Plan," "For Love of the Game"), who is now supposedly the front-runner for the job.
One thing's for certain: "Spider-Man," one of the most highly anticipated films in memory, is now on the fast track at Columbia Pictures. The studio wants to release the film in summer 2001, and that means a director is expected to be hired soon -- perhaps within a few weeks. At long last, Marvel Comics' biggest franchis
